"Lovely and Amazing"

BLESSED UNION: While United by Sound may most easily be classified as electronica, the label does the band a disservice in that it implies something less organic and substantial than what the San Francisco duo offers. Frontwoman Jeni Ivey sings with a snarl that verges into what you might expect from a jazz vocalist or perhaps an American-born Shirley Manson. Ivey’s voice, coupled with a mix of various synthetic accompaniments, makes an electronic-inspired sound that doesn’t overpower the organic elements. While not as eminently danceable as Ladytron, with whom the band is often compared, the effect makes for a more laid-back sound that pulls from various genres to create a more interesting sound. Expect United by Sound to be belting out new material, as their self-titled sophomore release dropped earlier this year. The band plays at Rocks on Friday, October 6. - Drew Mackie - Santa Barbara Independent

Bio

United By Sound was formed in 2001 by singer Jeni Ivey and producer TMO with one focus in mind: to ignore genres and create a unique sound that would move people. The two ditched their full scholarships at the prestigious California Institute of the Arts to develop this sound on their own terms. After five years of eating, breathing and living countless hours of shows, studio sessions, remixes, writing and re-writing, as well as your occasionally random and crazy life situations, UBS has found a new sound that they can claim as theirs; which has begun to move thousands of fans worldwide. Imagine if electro, crunk, bluegrass, rock, and ragga all met in the streets of the surreal 21st century America, fought like raging lions and then became great friends, had a child and named it UBS.
It started as Tmo’s illegal street poster campaign, with the simple slogan ‘United By Sound’ plastering walls and telephone poles across Southern California. This then accidently became the title of the experimental song writing collaboration of Jeni & TMO, where together they combined their unique musical backgrounds with a shared love for dub and hip-hop. After relocating to San Francisco, UBS’ previous influences collided with The Bay Area’s burgeoning Hyphy & Experimental Rock movements. These new influences in addition to the struggle to survive helped birth their new self titled EP. Now located in Los Angeles UBS is set to take the industry by storm. The song "Benjamin" in featured for a full 2:20 in the upcoming New Line Cinema Film 'Normal Adolescent Behavior' due in the spring of 2007. Expect to see much more of UBS in 2007 as they are currently negotiating different distribution deals.
