Univers. I knew I was going to write about this band again. Coming from Barcelona, the quartet formed in 2011 and in January 2012 they came out with their first digital single, 'Paral·lel', but the first turning point arrived with EP ‘La Pedregada’, released that December on Famèlic. The 7" single ‘Cavall Daurat’, followed in October 2013 and finally, since past March we can enjoy their debut full length, 'L'Estat Natural'. Dreamy shoegaze and dark pop, on a band where noise sounds embraceable and lyrics hidden, infectious music without evidences. This universe awaits you with their unique & irresistible dance... - bloodbuzzed

As mentioned, Barcelona's Univers are here, playing a couple NYC shows after SXSW. Well most of them. Their guitarist got detained at the border, so their bassist switched to guitar and their manager is playing bass. It all seemed to work out ok -- the band sounded fine just fine at Cake Shop last night. (If you like Crystal Stilts or Girls Names, you'll like Univers. Stream their album below.) We've got a few pictures from their show in this post. - Brooklyn Vegan

Only a year and a half after the release of their first EP, La Pedregada (Famèlic Records, 2012), Univers are one of the spanish bands with more international ressonance of the moment. Their first LP L’estat natural (2014) has been critically acclaimed, they have toured the country presenting it and now they play in the Pitchfork stage of Spain’s most important music festival. This show is the opportunity to see how Univers works in a big stage, but also to unveil Barcelona’s musical scene connections between bands, as I am sure a lot of those musicians will be in the audience. - Club Fonograma

It would be very easy to do a superficial reading and label it ‘conceptual’ but obviously we would be making an error. Shades are very important in all aspects of life so it’s important not to overlook them, something which Univers know all about. Don’t be fooled by constant references to Mother Earth. The name of the band and the song lyrics are full of metaphors which act as a shiny armor for the small and great loves and heartbreaks which present themselves from day to day. If we break down this handful of songs which make up their first full-length, we find ourselves faced with naked beings who are declaring themselves lost in this part of the journey but, at the same time, exited, positive and thankful for the rest of the journey which awaits. What hurts you makes you stronger, so they say.

Imagine the album as a journey. As a starting point we have an EP (‘La Pedregada’, 2012) which interrupted like a summer storm and left those who least expected it soaked through. The first stop on the journey was a brief moment to recharge when they released ‘Cavall Daurat’ in 2013 which would mark out the way: the objective. They are now releasing ‘L’estat Natural’, the third reference from a band with their body in Barcelona and their head in any other part of the world. Dreamers of a kind, this quartet want to move statues, fight from body to body to the limit or cross the light of the sun: they are simply unstoppable and their evolution shows this.

Let’s get back to the details. The details of that which is simple or the details of doing so much with so little. In ‘L’estat Natural’ we find those riffs which seem taken directly from the evening which precedes a good night: we can find pop which is dark, noisy and unkempt; elegant floor-fillers and controlled energy, but also uncontrolled at the same time. If you are looking for choruses you’ll need to search a little to find them as they’re not always evident or placed where you’d expect. The universe is full of small organisms which respond to common characteristics but we must not forget that beauty sometimes lies in that that which is rare and extravagant.
