"Four bands to ‘Rock the Block’ for free"

UNRB

In less than a year of being a band, the ska rockers of UNRB have pushed their horn-driven sound to victory, winning a “Battle of the Bands” competition February in Tallahassee and gearing up for another later this month in St. Petersburg, the band’s home base.

The big news, according to the band’s lead vocalist and electric ukulele player Noel Rochford, is UNRB is in the running to play in the Vans Warped Tour when it hits Vinoy Park on July 31 in St. Petersburg. To vote for UNRB, visit www.battleofthebands.com/u/UNRBmusic/.

Rochford said it has been a running joke among UNRB fans to find out what the letters in the band’s name stand for. He said his favorite is “Under Noel Rochford’s Budget.”

“Basically it can mean whatever you want it to mean,” Rochford said, but it originated as “Untitled Noel Rochford Band.”

Rochford’s bandmates are: Nic Giordano, bass; Eric Allaire, drums; Ben Datin, trumpet; Andy Pilcher, trombone, euphonium and tuba; Jeff Phillips, baritone and alto saxophone; and Dan Smith, tenor saxophone.

He said audiences can expect a wall of sound with big horns.

“We’re primarily a ska band,” Rochford said, “but we kind of play music of all sorts of styles, so we do a little bit of reggae, ska, Latin, punk, punk, whatever.”

When the horn players aren’t playing, he said they are singing, clapping or just running around the stage.

“That’s one of the things about seeing us live is we’re really high energy,” Rochford said, “and we jump around a lot.” - Citrus County Chronicle

Bio

UNRB is a ska-fusion band from St. Petersburg, FL that blends traditional reggae and ska rhythms with modern alt-rock aesthetics. They have won the hearts of Floridians since their inception in 2010, due in large part to their high-energy live performances which the Tampa Bay Times describes as "pure, unadulterated, forget-you're-an-adult-for-45-minutes fun".

The Gulf Coast band's bright sound is aided by the use of an electric ukulele instead of a guitar and bolstered by a four-piece horn section, which combine to create a sonic landscape as complex as it is whimsical. UNRB put out their debut album "Inform the Masses" in 2013 and released their new EP "Collateral Jammage" on June 17th, 2015 - coinciding with their first national tour which included a performance at Summerfest as direct support for Dirty Heads (Summerfest is recognized as the World's Largest Music Festival).

A busy July 2015 heralded the national release of their music video, The House on Lime Street via Substream Magazine.

Latest band buzz: UNRB remains a local favorite by being awarded it's 3rd consecutive Creative Loafing's Best of the Bay Reader's Choice Award for Best Ska/Reggae Band.

Bands of note with direct support: Less Than Jake, The Dirty Heads, The Supervillains, The Original Wailers, King Yellowman, Toots and The Maytals, Black Uhurus, The Toasters, Mad Caddies, Voodoo Glow Skulls and many more.

Festivals and events of note: Summerfest (World's Largest Music Festival - Milwaukee, WI), Sun Fest (Largest annual music festival on the East coast - West Palm Beach, FL), Tropical Heatwave (Tampa, FL), Gasparilla Music Festival (Tampa, FL), NASCAR Race (Homestead, FL), Chillin Music Festival (Tampa, FL), Music in the Park (Carbondale, IL), Music in the Treme - Mardi Gras (New Orleans, LA).
