Biography

It has been some time since that life-changing day when Deena, the voice and alter ego of Unruly Helga, decided to “do her own thing.” It may not have been one specific day, or moment, or anything else that you can put your finger on. It was more likely a lifetime of moments that lead to a clear decision that enough was enough. She found her voice and was prepared to step up and use it.

“It’s all about substance. It’s all about knowing who you are. It’s all about remaining true to those things.”

Before Deena even stepped foot into her first solo recording session she spent several years learning the ropes as a background and session singer for several local bands and productions companies. Splitting from her best friend's band and turning down offer after offer to join others would lead her to something more significant than she ever imagined; her own band, her own music, her own voice.

But that’s boring now. That's water under the bridge. These days it’s about writing songs, playing music, and just generally rocking indie style. You may be searching to read about the sensational stuff like fights, drugs, and a revolving door of band members. That’s not this band. That’s not the Unruly Helga story.

Unruly Helga has three full length albums under their belt. They have toured as part of major tours and independently, bringing their unique sound to thousands of fans across the United States. They have played in venues ranging from dive bars, to local clubs, to major venues and even several stadiums. They achieved enormous mainstream radio success with their Linkin Park acoustic cover "One Step Closer" a single released in conjunction with their second album "No Alternative". And they continue to grow, change and thrive as a band.

This is a story about perseverance and tenacity. It’s about knowing what you want and not letting anybody change that. This is about expressing yourself for no other reason then it feels right, and that shouldn’t be controlled by an industry of people who need to chew you up and spit you out to make money. It’s about playing music.

So… the music. After 9 years of playing, performing, and making music with the same four musicians, a day in the life of Unruly Helga is pretty damn gratifying. Unruly Helga's idea of success is not measured in monetary figures, but in the intensity of music created without the mainstream iron fist that kills the art in the artist.

So rip it, burn it, download it, you may even be as bold as to purchase it. However you do it – please enjoy the music. Let’s try to get back to a time of actually listening and forming opinions, and allowing yourself - maybe even forcing yourself - to think… for yourself.
From one voice of a broken generation to another, good luck out there.

Black Man In Simi Valley

Written By: Deena Kamm, YT

shouldn’t let ‘em know all the shit that you can take
they’ll just shovel more of it right back in your face
never show your tears don’t show them you’re afraid
bottle up your life so you never feel ashamed

you don’t try and you don’t care
but you don’t wanna hang your old hat just anywhere
so you fit in and you keep quiet and pretend that you don’t
know that there’s a black man in Simi Valley

everybody runs everybody hides
Using everybody else’s problems as a way to disguise
What they really want, what they really need
Focus on your own maybe you will judge a little less of things
simmer down now simmer down down
circus rolled in and out and they don't need another clown
whatcha gonna do - now you're feeling left out
are you gonna throw your stones at the black man in Simi Valley

maybe you're a black man
maybe you're a white girl
maybe you're a gay boy
living in a straight world
maybe I can see but I don't wanna say
cuz you like it where you are everything is okay
and you don't wanna know there's a black man in Simi Valley

who who who who you gonna be whatcha you gonna say
when they come to tell you that you're gonna have to live this way
what's it gonna take how you gonna get through
when you're standing all alone and it all comes back to you
either way - any way - up and down - every day
nothing new nothing changed you can't handle nothing strange
who you gonna sue - who you gonna undue
when you figure out there's a black man in Simi Valley

maybe you're a black man
maybe you're a white girl
maybe you're a gay boy
living in a straight world
maybe you're a Diva
stuck paying with food stamps
maybe you're the next star
who never got you're big chance

everybody's always in my way
everybody's needle's in my vein
so everybody maybe you can move

shouldn’t let ‘em see all the crap that you can take
they’ll just shovel more of it back - back into your face
never show your fears never own up to your mistakes
just ignore your mind so you never feel the shame
you don’t try and you don’t care
but you don’t wanna hang your fat hat just anywhere
so you sit tight and you keep quiet and pretend that there’s not

16 million black men
100 million white girls
almost a million gay boys
living in the same world
13 million diva’s
fighting over food stamps
and somewhere there’s a good guy
I hope he gets a fair chance

maybe I can see but I don't wanna say
cuz you like it where you are everything is okay
and you don't wanna know that there's a black man in Simi Valley

Maybe You

Written By: Deena Kamm

I don't know where this came from
I don't know where this comes from still
I never learned how to feel - I just feel
I just feel - I just feel
and I try to get it right
and I push with all my might, but...
sometimes it just feels like a fight
and I can't get it right
no I can't get it right
to save my life

I don't know where this came from
I didn't mean for it to be this way
I don't know where this comes from still
and all the things I need to say
I didn't mean for it to be this way
I didn't mean to sit down and play

and sometimes I feel like I'm gonna die
cuz sometimes I think I'm not allowed to cry
and I need you to save my life
please save my life
please save my life

and I can't save you
cuz I don't know how
and I can't change you
cuz it's too late now - so...
all that I have left is what I feel
and I just feel
and I just feel
and I just feel

and I try to get it right
and I push with all my might
and I need you to save my life
maybe you can save my life
maybe you can save my life
maybe you
maybe you
maybe you

I didn't mean for it to be this way
I just sat down... and played

Light As Air

Written By: Deena Kamm

you - you give me freedom
you bring me flowers for my hair
and when I slam a door closed
you open a window - breathe the air

you - you walk like you're heavy
you bitch like you're ruined from despair
you - you carry an anvil
you sing of dejection
but you're light as air

I know you - you're searching
and you'll do just about anything
I know you know I'm searching too
and I'll do just about anything

you box up all my secrets
ignore my resistance like a prayer
you - they call you a heretic
I tell them you're perfect
make me light as air

I know you - you're hungry
and you'll do just about anything
I know you know I'm hungry too
and I'll do just about anything

you - you give me freedom
you bring me flowers
make me...

I know you - you want me
and you'll do just about anything
I know you know I want you too
and I'll do just about anything

so show me some credence
some greed and take what you want to
so show me that dead skin
that sheds in the light

You Did This...

Written By: Deena Kamm

There were no hard feelings between Highland and vine
There were no hard feelings at the top of Mulholland Drive
There were no hard feelings while we burned on your floor
There were no hard feelings till that girl showed up at my door

All the old distractions draining from my head
All my questions answered by your words unsaid
There were no hard feelings while we wasted the days
But you did this to me like it’s some fucking sport you play

You did this… You did this to me
(you can never do this to me again
I can never do this again without you)

I could ask for too much and never get less
I could demand absolute and righteousness
He could stand in perfect satisfy the need
But he will never bear my soul when he’s looking at me

Your hands move sure your thought is swift your breath is calm you’re so alive
Your art is real your time is long your faith naïve your vision bright
You are a friend you are a home you are the truth and you’re a lie
Your hands move sure your skin is soft your lips are wet your so alive

Now I can not be trusted with a worthy heart
He can stand there naked I will tear him apart
He will suffer all the pain that you’ll never see
And it’s a shity deal for him because you did this to me

Miserable

Written By: Deena Kamm

I quit trying to be skinny
I quit trying to be young
I quit trying to be pretty
at least just for this song

I quit trying to be patient
I quit trying to be strong
I quit trying to pretend that
that you and I are gonna get along

cuz I'm not happy again
I'm not happy again
well I quit trying to be perfect
I quit trying to seem smart
I quit trying banging my head on this wall
for for for for for the sake of art

and I don't care if you show up
and I don't care if you stay
and for this one song I could not care less
if you never know my name

cuz I'm not happy again
I'm not happy again
I'm not happy no I'm not happy
no I - I - I'm not happy again

(well simmer down now)

super duper double looper
what a miserable girl
super duper pooper scooper
what a miserable world

well I'm sorry if I'm getting older
so do what you have to do
cuz I understand we're all worthless
past the ripe age of 22

so I quit trying to be worshiped
I quit trying to belong
well I quit - I'm done - I hate you
you're ruining my song

cuz I'm not happy again
I'm not happy again
I'm not happy no I'm not happy
no I - I - I'm not happy again
