UNSTRUNG HEROS
The bluegrass/newgrass group Unstrung Heros came together the same way bluegrass bands have formed for generations, according to guitarist and vocalist Jon Gold: "We just got together and started pickin'."
He said the group, consisting of himself, mandolin, banjo and bouzouki player Rob Watt, an old friend; guitar, mandolin, banjo, dobro, autoharp and bouzouki player Dan Arterburn; and upright bass player Bob Pace.
"It's not as traditional sounding," Gold said. "Man, we're widely influenced. We come from all over the place. You won't get just bluegrass from us. There's some blues, some Grateful Dead, rock and roll, you never know.
It's a fun time band, everybody likes to sing along," Gold said. "Everybody has a good time."
They just completed their first album, Thunder In The Grass, with four originals and two covers; several guest musicians add to the mix.
"It took us a ridiculously long time," he said, but it was worth it. "I think we had a fair amount of fun, especially in the last session. It was kind of a magical session. It just came together really nice. Some cool things happened. Rob and I have a special harmony thing. Our voices blend together really well."
Gold said they're getting radio time in Denver and Boulder, Colo., and bluegrass festivals such as Rocky Grass and the Four Corners Folk Festival have put the album into the rotation.
"We've had a lot of positive reaction to the record," he said. "It's a launching point."
