"Urbanator blows away..."

"Urbanator blows away all preconceptions of hip-hop/jazz hybrids with a tight, gritty self-titled record which synthesizes the two styles through redefinition".
Jazz Times - Jazz Times

"Hip-hop and be-bop"

"It's not news that the forces of hip-hop and be-bop have been on a collision course for years now...the result is one of the most enjoyable marriages of these idioms that's come down the...turnpike".
Music Paper - Music Paper

"Urbanator is another step"

"...Urbanator is another step in the right direction for this new and promising fusion".
Time Out - Time Out

"The virtue of Urbanator is that all the music was written for the LP"

"....Hancock spreads his musical wings further on the sample-free Urbanator, the new project from Hip Bop Records uniting jazz,R&B, and hip hop sounds due in May. Yet another cover of "Chameleon" appears on this project, more than likely to hook listeners who may not give the LP's remaining tunes a chance.
The virtue of Urbanator is that all the music was written for the LP without raiding prerecorded jazz cuts. Saxophonist/violinist Michal Urbaniak, quitarist Jane Getter, keyboardist Jon Dryden and bassist Al McDowell accomplish the elusive goal of making this blend work on "Hopscotch" and "Hot Jazz Biscults".
The latter tune, overlaid with a rap by guest artist Solid and trumpet paintings from fusion funker Tom Browne ("Funkin' For Jamaica"), may well become a crossover hit. It has the most catchy, original bass line since Digable Planets "Cool Like Dat", and is the most elegant construction on the album - a sort of Naughty By Nature meets Dizzy Gillesple. It's ambulatory proof that jazz and hip hop can produce an offspring that's reprehensible to neither genre.
" Hot Jazz Biscults" can be reconfigured into monkey bread or a braided ring coffee cake with additional musicians. It will be interesting to see the shape the remixes take, and if they preserve the same finesse".
