"Gig Alert: Utah Green"

Hailing from the banjo-picking, acid-munching hills of Asheville, North Carolina, Utah Green is a songwriter to watch. She’s remained largely unknown, but with a new album full of gorgeous folk lullabies out on The Royal Potato Family label, she won’t be unknown for long. With nothing but voice and guitar, her “14:42” possesses both the loneliness and world-weary beauty of an old sailor’s shanty. - Marlon Bishop: WNYC Culture Producer

"Introducing…Utah Green"

Utah Green is a troubadour and underground poet, and has just released her debut album via label The Royal Potato Family. The songs on ForTune are full of gorgeous natural imagery of mountains, rivers and valleys and injected with a bold sense of humour and passion for living. Best of all, she is a story-telling traveller, and delivers these songs in a heartwarming voice over toe-tapping rhythms of acoustic guitar and banjo, crafting music that calls back to classic Americana and sounds like it was created around a campfire in the Appalachian mountains. - Mad Mackerel Music

"SoundTrack Web Extra: Utah Green"

“ForTune is a sweet album the deserves close listening. It’s modern folk — the songs are contemporary and are based on Green’s very current world view — but performed the same way songs would have been ages before MP3 and album art.”

“Her songs are that paired down, bare-basics folk that recalls field recordings and field worker, dust bowl refugees and train hoppers”

Bio

Utah Green—a song-painter, a story-singer, a smile-maker and a tearjerker—from the western hills of North Carolina, has recently released her debut album, ForTune, on Brooklyn indie label, The Royal Potato Family. Having remained largely underground to this point in time, Utah has slowly and deliberately developed her craft performing at listening rooms, small theaters and house concerts most often around the Southeast, but as far away as Ketchikan, Alaska, New Orleans, Louisiana and San Cristobal de Las Casas, Mexico.

For the recording of ForTune, Utah Green entered the studio with her voice, guitar, harmonica and 14 songs. She tracked unaccompanied and unplugged, allowing these quirky little folk tunes to sing for themselves. In the spirit of traditional mountain and sea songs, Utah assumes a voice for people of all walks, drawing inspiration from a gypsy-like existence, traveling as the muse calls and detached from trappings of contemporary times. She communicates simply with words and music and smiling eyes.

Like a mountain angel born of a long forgotten backwoods American town, Utah Green is a quixotic and purely genuine—a simultaneously modern and ancient voice. Listen closely as she resonates, making the outside world go quiet for just a moment.

“Utah Green reminds me of a young Ani DiFranco. Looking forward to charting her artistic progress. An impressive start, though.” – The Late Greats
