Uver plays studio for First Friday

Uver is Fritz Schwalm’s middle name. To be precise, it’s Uwe, but the Denton musician named his solo project Uver as a tip of the hat to a family friend’s pronunciation of his middle name.

Schwalm launched his solo project in 2004 and occasionally recruits other musicians for shows around town.

Uver will perform during the First Friday Denton mixer at A Creative Art Studio, 227 W. Oak St. in downtown.

Artist Greg Colin will be available to do portrait sketches during the evening, and locals gather for art, music, wine and refreshments.

“We play mostly originals, but for this solo acoustic appearance, I’m doing half and half — originals and covers,” Schwalm said.

Uver’s covers range from Modern English to Lynyrd Skynyrd.

“I’m interested in songs emphasizing emotional content versus technical musicianship,” Schwalm said. “[For] example, I perform a cover of ‘First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,’ made into a hit by Roberta Flack. It’ll fall into a vat of cheese if not performed properly.”

The musician was invited to join the art and music mixer when one of the organizers, Robin Huttash, heard him perform during the Denton Community Market.

“My material is fairly mellow, where vocals and guitar blend as evenly as I can blend them,” Schwalm said. “I’ll play two 50-minute sets and leave plenty of ambient room for people to comfortably be able to converse and mingle and check out Robin’s cool studio.”
