Bio

Uxía, the voice of the Atlantic. Uxía conceives writing words and music that always flow from the deep of her soul. In 2012 she celebrates 27 years of artistic carreer, what turns her into one of the most popular and cherrished voices of Galician language. The traditional music is always present in her songs, but with an innovating and personal treatment.

Since her debut with “Foliada de Marzo” (1986), her work has represented a point of encounter for different cultures, a mean of communicating among diverse communities and their inhabitants.

Member of “Na Lúa” until 1991, when she starts on her own as a response to the natural evolution of her career. In that same year she edits “Entre cidades”, and four years later “Estou Vivindo no ceo”, a record thighly valued by the critics that consolidated her international renown.

In 1997, along with singers Rasha (Sudan) and María Salgado (Castilla-Spain) and guitarplayer Cuchús Pimentel, she edits “La sal de la vida”, a record sealed by diversity and cultural junctions.

“Danza das areas” (2000), represents an inflection point in her trajectory with compositions of her own and more contemporary sounds.

She's always had the belief that a community that has sang through all times cannot lose such a fundamental instrument as its voice. That is why she has promoted the creation of “Cantareira's groups” (women traditional singers) such as Malvela or Cantadeiras do Berbés, participating in numerous musical experiences with renowned artists such as Tito Paris, Jessie Norman, Dulce Pontes, Noa, João Afonso or Chico César, among others.

Her career is also emphasized by her production work in records such as “Vida miña” and “Interior” by Emilio Rúa, “Na Flor dos meus anos” by Señora Carmen e Malvela (edited by Malvela), and "A nena e o grilo" by Magín Blanco for the Publishing House Editorial OQO.

Uxía captures in her compositions the essence of her wide experiences among kindred musicians from all over the world and their traditional backgrounds as well. It all emerges and flows as a natural consecuence of this bond.

Her passion for cultural mixes gets her to merge voices, instruments, rythms and sounds... as a magnet for talent, a proof of this is her work as the Artistic Director and creator of the International Festival of Lusofonía “Cantos na Maré”, a multicultural show conceived as a point of reunion for the best voices from the lusophone (portuguese) areas, Portugal, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, etc.

In “Eterno Navegar”, she merges atlantic sounds and african rythms with her melodic voice and her intimistic style.

With her most recent “Meu Canto”, Uxía follows the path of a culture that travels and changes the meaning and nature of frontiers. This time she travels to Brazil, where she recorded this work in the Biscoito Fino Studios, in Río de Janeiro.

The choice was not casual. Uxía was willing to approach this new challenge with the production of the prestigious Jaime Alem (Maria Bethânia's producer), the talent and complicity of the virtuoso instrumentalist Sérgio Tannus, and the collaboration of Lenine in the theme “Os Teus Ollos”, the upmost promise for words and music that flow always from the deep of her soul.
