"THE OTHER WOMAN: VAGUE-A-BONDE/ GHOST IN SATURN?"

Every week we get to play two tracks for Tom Robinson on his excellent BBC 6 Music Introducing show... you can listen again here.

This little slice of pop loveliness is from V.A.B’s debut release Involution/Evolution which is out now. Nicole Brenny is a 23 year old bedroom producer from Minneapolis, she says: “It’s beat-driven bedroom pop. It’s basically Fleetwood Mac meets K-pop.” Whatever it is it’s catchy as hell and we’re a fan of the layered vocals, which admittedly is achingly hip and getting a bit tired these days, but with beautifully crafted pop beds like on this track she’s onto a real winner. Watch this space! - Fresh on the Net

"RS HOT SPOT #08 stay updated with radioSpin"

Do you remember Nicole Brenny and her solo-project Vague-à-Bonde? Her first album Involution/Evolution was recorded while Nicole was traveling as a true vagabond- sleeping in basements, houses and couch-surfing alone across North America. She currently has settled in Minneapolis, MN and she is working on her second release, co-producing with Chris Heidman (producer of Howler‘s America Give Up). Evolved represents a departure from her first album: it is the first single on her second release which is due out this fall. Evolved is one of many catchy pop songs on the new record that showcase the sonic feeling of what came from so much time alone recording in the woods and exploring the American and Canadian landscape from the driver’s seat. What else? Well begun is half done. - Radio Spin

"NEW MUSIC: Vague-à-Bonde"

At some point last year, some tracks appeared in my Soundcloud inbox from a mysterious singer that simply went by the name Nichole Alicia. I remember scouring the internet for clues about this girl, only to find nothing. Well, a year has passed and fortunately I have connected with her on Twitter, and I’ve learned that she is set to drop a full length album next week under the new name Vagueabonde. The Minneapolis native calls her sound “bedroom pop,” and she writes, produces, and records her own tracks creating a vibe stands out from most anything I’ve heard this year.

She shared thee tracks with me last week via Soundcloud. What strikes me is the rather upbeat and pop melodies. My favorite of the trio is “Voices,” which combines some indie vibes with an almost Motown sound through the chorus. Check it. - The Couch Sessions

"Amazing Instore featured artist #15"

This week we introduce you to Vague-à-bonde, a solo project of Minneapolis based bedroom-pop songstress Nicole Brenny. Her amazingtunes.com profile currently showcases three tracks from her debut album Involution/Evolution.

These tracks present Vague-à-bonde as an artist that's managed to find a suitable balance between upbeat electro-pop and a resonant, ethereal darkness. It's quite the blend, and Nicole is ambitious to try it out. We get the impression that Vague-à-bonde will have that rare ability to appeal to both fans of pop and staunch enthusiasts of more left field genres.

This is typified in 'MV' in which a Kraftwerk style backing-track is dominated by Nicole's reverb laden vocal hooks. 'Voices' on the other hand is slightly more restrained, where the strict pluses of a drum machine are replaced with vocal layers and handclaps which make it comparable to some of Camille's earlier output.

Indeed Vague-à-bonde is already making waves, her next show is supporting Porcelain Raft. So if you're anywhere near Minneapolis on the 6th of April be sure to head down to the 7th Street Entry for what we're sure will be a fabulous show. - Amazing Radio (UK)

"Best New Releases for Week of Feb. 21, II"

In Part One of this week’s Best New Releases, there are many lead singles off of new albums, bonus tracks and flashback tracks from artists like fun, Princeton, Grimes, Wild Nothing, Dirty Ghosts and Perfume Genius. We decided to split last week’s new releases into two posts, since we wanted the Part One installment to focus on profiles and songs of our favorite releases of the week.

Today’s post, Part Two, contains many worthy lead tracks from new albums out now covering a wide range of styles and genres from singer/songwriter to alternative rock, punk to pop. The artists include Damien Jurado, Terry Malts, Lampchop, Tindersticks, Sara Radle, Inca Gold, Archers of Loaf, and a few IRC exclusives from DIY artists like Minneapolis alternative rock bands Jean George and Vague-à-Bonde, and Mexico‘s rockers Nousis. Each of these artists independently dropped their albums in the past week, but had no coverage on the web that we could find in a Google search.

"New: Vague-a-Bonde “Voices”"

Nicole Alicia, formerly of Waxx Maxx, has concocted a new musical project called Vague-a-Bonde. To my knowledge it is her second solo project. This project she describes as “Fleetwood Mac meets K-pop.” Sound intriguing? It is. - Surviving the Golden Age

"Spotlight: Vague-à-bonde"

Amidst French films and a healthy dose of escapism arose Vague-à-bonde, Nicole Brenny’s solo endeavor, which is now aptly running amok in the pop-electronic realm but always with a sensibility and authorial intent grounding the project. Growing up cloistered in the Midwest, Brenny found herself in the stillness of small town living; what would spell hellish boredom for some, she instead directed into free studio hours, writing music and recording on her computer’s basic sound software. Now, after moving through an electro collaboration with Mark Mallman (Waxx Maxx), guest recording with Gigamesh, and relocating to Minneapolis, Brenny has self-produced a debut album under her Euro-cized moniker.

Entitled Involution/Evolution, the new album treads various textural and lyrical planes – working in and out of 808s and dabs of glitch are vapor-like vocals, airy yet rich, to deliver her content. Good-natured synth lends some tasteful misdirection in the track “MV,” as Brenny’s words consider the fleeting nature of experience, like sneaking some existential theory inside a comic book. Vague-à-bonde, as the debut title suggests, handles some heavier dualisms: internal processing versus outward expression, or dismal perceptions meeting vibrant proclamations, to name a few. “Originally the album was supposed to be two EPs and one was supposed to be darker,” says Brenny. “[That] would deal with the feelings of involution – loss and regret – and then evolution is expanding beyond yourself; it’s about opportunity and growth, so the second EP would have been songs that were more hopeful and pop inspired…less experimental and dark.”

After further consideration of her split record, Brenny settled on fusing the two ideas into one: “It’s a concept of turning something that’s ethereal into something of matter and weight – and also the opposite,” she explains, pledging to the unity of polar ideologies. Effectively, Vague-à-bonde has soldered poetic contemplation into the accessibility of electronic pop – a move of most delicate roguery.

"MP3: Vague-à-bonde "Voices""

Minneapolis-based Vague-à-bonde reminds me of a submission I got two years ago from Grimes, who is finally getting widespread recognition with her new album Visions.

I expect producer/songwriter Nicole Alicia of Vague-à-bonde to follow a similar path. I wouldn’t be surprised if she releases a few excellent EPs, builds a small following, and eventually breaks out with an album on a relatively big label. She has the sort of ability to make easy predictions, similarly to Claire Boucher and Grimes.

Although Vague-à-bonde has a twinkling yet dark electronic-pop-in-a-bedroom quality that bears a resemblance to Grimes, Nicole Alicia is certainly more of a pop-driven songwriter. Her songs are less dependent on atmosphere and more so on hooks, which are an infectious hybrid of bubblegum electro-pop and riveting indie-pop, where names like Metric and Mates of State are more accurate. The expressive electro-pop of Erasure also isn’t too far off.

On another note, despite the French name, Vague-à-bonde sounds like a fusion of the electronic-pop scenes in Sweden and South Korea.

She has three songs available on her Soundcloud, the most impressive being “Voices”. Halted vocal samples run quickly under an arrangement of keys and violin swipes, with the track’s airy and serene qualities shining brightly. I was glad to see Nicole Alicia reference Korean pop as an influence, and this track is certainly most representative of that with the quirky vocal sampling and ceaseless twinkle. “It’s beat-driven bedroom pop. It’s basically Fleetwood Mac meets K-pop,” she said.

Bio

Vague-à-bonde is my first solo project. I started from scratch at the age of 22, learning 4 different recording platforms within a matter of months. I recorded my first album Involution/Evolution as a true vagabond- living in apartments, basements, houses and couch-surfing alone across the USA and Quebec in my 2000 pontiac grand am. I currently live in Minneapolis. As of now I do all of the work myself- from writing, playing the instruments, singing, arranging and recording. I'm influenced by K-pop and Top 40 American pop, but I am also highly influenced by U2 (Zooropa is my favorite!) and Fleetwood Mac. Lucid dreaming and astral traveling also influenced my first release. I spent many hours alone/in isolation in a cabin up North recording and writing songs for my first album. I'm currently working on my second release, co-producing with Chris Heidman (producer of Howler's "America Give Up" -Rough Trade 2012). "Evolved" is a taste of what is to come.
