Vaké

When you think of Pop music you don’t often associate it with depth or meaningful lyrics, but Vaké says that’s the only way she knows how to write songs. “I don’t think there’s good or bad music in the world. I just think that there’s music that brings meaning and understanding into people’s lives and there’s music that just makes noise.” Born in Upland California, Vaké spent her childhood being raised in Las Vegas, Nevada before her parents moved their family to a small town called Bunkerville. She always showed an inclination for music having started playing the piano at the age of 5 and even participating in her high school’s show choir. It wasn’t until she was in her second year of college that she began to become really interested in music. “It wasn’t something I really planned at all [laughs] I wanted to be a national soccer player! But I started taking this Poetry/Drama class in the winter and found I not only liked reading poetry but writing my own work.” Vaké also blames her desert roots for playing a role in her music, “[Smiles] I am proud to say that if it weren’t for my weakness of the cold and snow I probably would’ve never taught myself how to play the guitar that semester.” Of course she blames one other thing that helped ignite her songwriting, a boy. “It all seems like a therapeutic process now and sounds just like a Taylor Swift song; a boy broke my heart, I wrote some words about it, combined them with chords and now I have the last word.” Now back in the West, Vaké is excited to start performing and ready to bring a different light to Pop music. “People say that Pop [music] is mindless, I say… they haven’t had me melt their face off yet.”
