August 23 – Larry Vannatta
- Mikey’s Juke Joint & Eatery -

Larry Vannatta is a country-music recording artist and award-winning songwriter from Milo, Alberta, Canada.

Musician, vocalist, prolific song writer; Larry Vannatta has been writing and recording professional songs, for the past twenty five years. His smooth vocal talents are clear, and distinctly his own. Larry has just recently received the “Song Writer of the Year” award by the European Country Music Association in 2011, and is a two time Canadian Juno nominee for Country Group of the Year. He was nominated for best male artist and fan choice award by the Association of Country Music in Alberta in 2012. Larry’s entertaining performances range from songwriter showcase, two- and three-piece acoustic acts to five-piece country shows. He performs original, toe-tapping melodies, Alberta traditional country, bluegrass, and smooth folk ballads. With his smooth vocal talents; award-winning, song-writing skills and professionalism, Larry’s songs are “must-hear” music and his live performances are a “must-to-experience.”

Larry’s latest 12-track album, Working Class Man, was released in 2011/2012. The album is filled with his smooth vocals and lyrics that easily relate to the everyday listener. The title track, “Working Class Man” was released on Hillcrest CDs, April 2012 across Europe, UK, Australia, France, Spain, Sweden, New Zealand, Norway, Demark, and Netherlands; it was released on RDR promotion Feb 2012 in Canada. Pre-released single tracks have been promoted by Ross Allen on Hillcrest CDs. Tracks are proving to be chart toppers throughout Europe: “Paradise” and “Country Junkie.”

Working Class Man Larry Vannatta releases new solo CD

By Jody Seeley
He hails from Milo, Alberta
and sings songs people can
relate to…especially the
working class who he dedicates his
latest CD to.
When you get the chance to sit
across from Larry Vannatta, you
will find a down-home, first class
guy who loves music. This born and
raised farm boy is an ambassador to
small town spirit and life.
In fact his Mom played in his band
for 18 years with his former band
‘Straight Clean & Simple.’ There
probably isn’t a town in Southern
Alberta he hasn’t played in.
Although he’s not searching for
awards to confirm his passion, talent
finds a way to get recognized.
He is a two-time, Canadian Juno
nominee and was awarded the
Songwriter of the Year award by the
European Country Music Association
(ECMA) in 2011. He was also
nominated for best male artist and
fan choice award by the Association
of Country Music in Alberta in
2012.
After taking a break to raise a
family (3 kids) with his wife of 30
years, Vannatta is back with his
solo project Working Class Man.
When asked, he can’t recall if this is
his 10th or 11th CD but nonetheless
he is passionate about his latest
work.
Vannatta tells me he loves to write
honest songs with good morals. He
grabs his inspiration from everyday
life...from his background and even
from “driving down the road and a
melody pops into your head.”
Over the years he has had a
number of musical influences from
the Nitty Gritty Dirt band, Ozark
Mountain Dare Devils to Alan Jackson
and the Zac Brown Band.
The title track of his new CD was
released in Canada in February of
2012, and then in April 2012 across

"Larry Vannatta – “Working Class Man” CD Review"

Larry Vannatta – “Working Class Man” CD Review by CTW Agency, Nashville, TN

Larry Vannatta proves he knows exactly what it takes to touch the heart of a working class man, or, a working class woman for that matter, with the down-to-earth country music and songs found on his newly released 12-track CD Album “Working Class Man.” It is chocked full of solid country traditional song material that clearly demonstrates his talents as a singer, musician, and prolific songwriter. His voice is smooth, polished, and powerfully engaging. And his songs are relatable to the everyday working class in a genuine and positive manner.

Vannatta penned eight out of the twelve song tracks on his album which includes “Paradise”, “This Old Heart of Mine”, “Working Class Man”, “Faster Horses, “Hooked On You”, “Country Junkie”, “Johnny Play it Again”, and “Gone Fishing.”

His co-writing partners on “Brick By Brick” were Janice E. Hopkins and Greg C. Brown, while song lyricist Carolyn Taylor White joined him on their co-write of “Heart On My Sleeve.” The sole cover song Larry selected to be included on his album is “Sixteen Tons” written by Merle Travis and made popular by the late and beloved recording artist, Tennessee Ernie Ford. Larry performs his up-tempo rendition of this classic working man’s song brilliantly!

“Paradise” is exactly where this exquisite song takes you! “This Old Heart of Mine” is a beautiful love ballad; with a sinuous melody and Larry’s smooth crooning delivered so flawlessly makes this one of my personal favorites. “Johnny Play It Again” has a delightful up-tempo Country-Cajun flair that gets your toes to tapping and hands to clapping. And “I’m Hooked On You” is sure to brighten the airwaves with its catchy chorus and sunny lyrics. Larry also gives us a delightful acoustic version of his title track “Working Class Man” to finish up our listen; which has more of an intimate feel than his fully produced version. All twelve songs on this album are produced and performed musically and vocally with top-notch perfection; every one of them touches the listeners’ musical senses.

This is a fabulous album, and for me Larry Vannatta’s “Working Class Man” sits right alongside my George Strait collection! Yes, it’s that good! I recommend you get yourself a copy today . . . you won’t be disappointed.

"Larry Vannatta was inducted into Palliser's Wall of Fame"

Musician Larry Vannatta encourages teachers to let kids express themselves
Giselle Wedemire/Intern Reporter, Monday, September 3, 2012
Though Milo-area-based country musician Larry Vannatta graduated from County Central High School (CCHS) in 1978, he received his first school award last Thursday at the sixth annual Palliser Wall of Fame induction ceremony.

"I know it took me 50 years - I've never gotten an award in school, but I finally got it," Vanatta said during his speech at the

ceremony.

More than 900 Palliser staff, friends and families were in attendance at the ceremony, which was part of the Opening Day Celebration for Palliser Regional Schools at Vulcan's Cultural-Recreational Centre.

Vannatta was one of four inductees honoured this year for their outstanding achievements in their particular fields.

In addition to Vannatta, other honoured inductees included Olympic skater Jason Turner, Dr. David Tano, and Lethbridge

Herald photographer Ian Martens - all of whom attended Palliser schools and have since gone on to achieve remarkable goals.

A self-taught musician and songwriter, Vannatta said in his speech that music became his creative outlet primarily because it allowed him to express himself in ways that he never could in mandatory school essays.

Though he admitted that school was difficult for him as he was never the best at spelling, he found that he excelled in music despite never taking music lessons and his inability to read music.

In his career as a musician, during which he has received Juno Awards nominations in 1992 and 1993 as well as the Songwriter of the Year award from the European Country Music Association in 2011, Vannatta has found that education is a constant and lifelong journey.

Echoing the school board's motto of "Dream and believe, learn and achieve," he implored the teachers of Palliser Regional Schools to continue their efforts to seek out the talents and passions of their kids to help them find and reach their dreams.

"As a songwriter, it is my role to express myself emotionally with music," he said.

"Let those kids in school express themselves whether they're good at this or that because if you look for the abilities in those kids, it's amazing what they can do."

Colleen Deitz, vice-chair of Palliser's school board, personally nominated Vannatta because she said his achievements beyond his days at CCHS have "warranted him the committee's recognition."

Canadian finds success in the European Country Music Market
January 24, 2012
by Lily C
.Larry Vannatta has been writing songs for over 25 years. He began his first band in the 90s, “Straight, Clean and Simple.” Around the same time, his music was introduced into the European Country Music Market, which proved to be successful, as he was kept busy touring. He also garnered back-to-back Juno nominations. And the next part of his journey may be what encourages you most, Larry took pause. He stopped to “raise a wonderful family.” Some of you may have had to take pause, but a pause is not an ending! He recently returned to his love of songwriting and performing original music and released his new 2011/12 album, “Working Class Man.” Upon his return, he won “Songwriter of the Year” from the European Country Music Association, and he’s been nominated for Male Artist of the Year by the Alberta Country Music Association. Not bad for someone whose only recently gotten back into music. We asked him to share his knowledge and experience of the European country music scene.

In Larry’s Words…

The European Country Market is very different than our commercial Canadian country radio format; it would be closer to our college market playing different genres of music on the same radio station. Radio programmers have their own shows and select the artists and the music they want to play. There are a lot of radio programmers in many countries across Europe, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, giving many artists an opportunity to be presented on their shows. One thing I have found with playlist reports is you can be added to a music directors program alongside big names like Brad Paisley, Zac Brown, and George Strait. A well written song, is well written no matter who wrote or performs it. That said, you still need to have: professionally recorded music, good vocals, well crafted songs, and radio promotions to represent your music.
I have been very fortunate to be working with Ross Allen the owner of Hillcrest Music Canada and his Radio Marketing Co. Ross is a singer, songwriter, producer, and recording artist who has gained the respect of recording artists and country radio stations programmers throughout the world. I have the up most respect for Ross and as he has helped me though the years giving me honest critical advice. If anybody knows the European Country Market Ross does and has proved it by getting my songs in the top European Country charts and helping me get awards in the European Country Music Market.

The European market for country music has opened many doors for me and has helped me better craft my song writing skills and provide a top quality product. I have gained many contacts and friendships throughout the European market with music directors, musicians, labels, and peers. Music directors are more accessible on the internet than they have ever been before. I was just recently chatting on Facebook with a programmer from Netherlands who remembers when I released my first single in Europe 1991. Wow he knew more about me then I knew about myself. With the exposure I have gained, promotions and success though radio singles across Europe, I highly recommend it. If you’re a songwriter looking to get your music exposed by yourself or other artists, it’s a great learning curve and understanding of the music world, learn your craft, select only the songs that fit the specific market place and professionally get them recorded.

"Canadian Cowboy Country Magazine"

Music of the West
By Hugh McLennan
December-January 2009

Cowboys & Soldiers Vannatta
“The sailors caught a break that the cowboys never could, ’cause they never fenced the sea.” That’s a line from the hauntingly beautiful song, Cowboys and Sailors from a CD produced by Larry Vannatta and Bud Maynard. The project features session leader Larry Vannatta on vocals, banjo and guitar, Bud Maynard on bass and vocals, Blaine Evans on mandolin, Lloyd Humphrey on accordion and spoons, Lisa Nail provides vocals, Marina Vannatta on keyboard, Larry McIntosh on drums, Susan Leroux on violin and Arturo Raimirez on percussion. A flute weaves through the melody on this Bud Maynard composition, but the liner notes don’t tell us who’s playing it. This neat album is dedicated to the old cowboys and pioneers who opened up the West and the men and women of two generations who gave their youth and freedom to fight in two world wars. Many of the songs are the ones we remember from the war years — Tipperary, White Cliffs of Dover and Long Long Trail — blended with some cowboy classics of the same era. It was recorded in front of an enthusiastic and appreciative live audience at the Horton Road Legion in Calgary. Those of us old enough to remember songs from that era will be transported back to those earlier times. If you’re too young to remember, you’ll still get a sense of what brought the free world together in those challenging times.

Album reviews:
Larry Vannatta proves he knows exactly what it takes to touch the heart of a working class man, or, a working class woman for that matter, with the down-to-earth country music and songs found on his newly released 12-track CD Album “Working Class Man.” It is chocked full of solid country traditional song material that clearly demonstrates his talents as a singer, musician, and prolific songwriter. His voice is smooth, polished, and powerfully engaging. And his songs are relatable to the everyday working class in a genuine and positive manner. This is a fabulous album, and for me Larry Vannatta’s “Working Class Man” sits right alongside my George Strait collection! Yes, it’s that good! I recommend you get yourself a copy today . . . you won’t be disappointed. CTW Agency, Nashville, TN

Press
"When you get the chance to sit across from Larry Vannatta, you will find a down-home, first class guy who loves music. This born and raised farm boy is an ambassador to small town spirit and life. There probably isn’t a town in Southern Alberta he hasn’t played in. He hails from Milo, Alberta and sings songs people can relate to…especially the working class who he dedicates his latest CD to. He was a feature artist on ‘Made in Alberta’ which is aired on 99.7 Sun Country and AM 1140 Radio. Horsesall.com by Jody Seeley

Bio- History
Larry is a born and raised Albertan and comes from a musical back ground that he gives full credit to his mom. “When I started my first band Straight Clean & Simple, the best musician I could find was my mom, who ended up playing piano in my band for 18 years. Not too many mother, son bands that I can recall”. Since those early beginnings Larry has taken those strong family values, experience and added them along with his song writing skills and musical friends. He has gained many friendships with fellow musician, peers and artist over the years and employs these musical friends in his band. “I am really lucky to get to do what I love to do, write songs, play music with such great musicians and the best part is we are all family and friends”.
