"Vapor review"

Vapor
promo
(independent,2005)

The Houston based band Vapor is a band that will appeal to many of the readers at melodic.net and ofcourse others. The band that consists of Daryl Youngblood (vocals, guitars), Rick Weinland (drums) and Trevor Smith (bass),Chad Erb (guitars) plays traditional rock not that far away from VonRay, The Calling or Love 45 in style. Strong melodies and choruses that gets stuck in the head is their receipt and they’re doing it really good. Their pop melodies in rock versions is just made for radio play and can’t be nothing else than appreciated if you’re into the little softer and more positive side of modern rock. The only thing that they have against them is that many bigger labels these days doesn’t sign this kind of rock. This isn’t as trendy today as the emo or the post-hardcore, but has more potential with the right song at the right moment.
The sound and production on this 14-song promo album is very good and clean, very suitable for this kind of rock. And it’s not that strange because the band has been working with no one else than David Bianco (Butch Walker - Left Of Self-Centered (Arista), Black Lab - Your Body Above Me (Geffen) och Switchfoot - Live in San Diego DVD).
This album is a little bit of what is to come and I’ll ask me is it enough material for a “real” album.

Bio

At the heart of rock music culture for more than forty years have been "garage bands". These closet superstars congregate in the garage or basement, hash out musical ideas, hold endless jam sessions and dream of taking their music to an audience beyond their family and friends. Out of the garages of Houston, Texas comes Vapor, creating a captivating blend of modern and pop rock.
The band--Daryl Youngblood (lead vocalist/guitarist), Rick Weinland (drums), Chad Erb (guitars) & Trevor Smith (bass) -- boasts several years of professional experience in various groups. They have had rapid success in the short period that they have been together. In the summer of 2000, they were picked by Interscope Records out of thousands of bands to showcase at Houston's "Engine Room" in the 94.5 The Buzz band search. Since then, they have been talking with Interscope as well as many other major labels. They have just finished recording a full length album which was produced by David Bianco (Ozzy, Mick Jagger, Tom Petty) and co-produced by Daryl Youngblood (Vapor). The album was Recorded at Maddog Studios in LA and mixed at the world famous Larrabee Studios in Hollywood CA. The band is currently in regular rotation on 94.5 The Buzz in Houston (4th largest Modern rock station in the country) on The Texas Buzz Show. They were recently featured live where they had an interview and had several songs showcased. Vapor is a regularly featured artist at Buzz events.
Vapor's music is chock full of provocative and insightful songs that tackle issues and themes that are very unorthodox for the proverbial rock band. But Trevor emphasizes that "the songs are about things you don't normally hear coming from a modern-rock band but the music is very radio friendly". Daryl says that the unifying aspect in all the songs is the humanity and relevance the band expresses in its lyrics. "We don't want to discuss the same old, tired rock cliches in our music. It's been done. We have a lot of things to say and many points of view to be considered."
The members of Vapor hope to remain relevant to their audience. "Music is an identity for some people, it's a safe haven for others. It is even an aggression outlet for others. However, for most of us, it is a steady companion subtly playing the anthem behind our lives and marrying itself to our thoughts and emotions." Daryl reflects, "Personally, I feel that with this in mind I owe more to this art than some trite, little hooky song especially designed to have someone sing it for two months and then get bored with it because it never really went beyond their ears. If we have a chance to be heard by the world, why not say something that really penetrates."
Daryl adds that Vapor's shows are the most important way they bond with their listeners. "There's a depth of emotion which transcends when music is created live which cannot always be established when just hearing it in a car." As far as the rigors of touring go, Vapor feels the ends are worth the means. "We've been given a great opportunity. It may even only be fifteen seconds. If that's the case, then we have fifteen seconds to say something timeless and meaningful. Lots of people would love to do what we do. So we consider it a privilege. If part of that means dealing with the headaches and logistics, then that's part of the gig."
