In 1999, childhood friends Bonzi and Logic released a 12” followed by several shows that showcased their “live band” sound with a drummer, DJ, guitarist and bassist before the group imploded a mere 6 months later. Bonzi left to Vancouver where he studied philosophy and continued to do his thing in the underground; doing shows and releasing tracks on mix tapes. Logic remained back in Toronto running a business and working on his production skills. Both also found time to attend music school and delve deeper into their craft.
Now almost a decade later the T-dot MC/Producers have reunited to fulfill their destiny. In a thick haze of blunt smoke and creativity, cloistered away in the dead of winter in an east end studio; they created a 15 track concept album; “Rap Camp”. It was during these legendary sessions that the Varietechniches folk-hop sound was reborn and their unmistakably original lyrical soundscapes laid down with passionate conviction.
Varietechniches offer something totally original in these days of musical monotony; intensely musical hip-hop with a dense lyrical allegory that confronts the pertinent issues of our troubled times; family, love, jealousy, regret, self-identity, capitalist brainwashing, global warming, religion/god and the meaning of life just to name a few.
For Varietechniches this is just the beginning. In love with making music and with an exceptional relationship both in and out of the studio – the jams will keep coming until people take notice. Listening to Varietechniches, with their wide range of influences, one can only imagine where their sound will go. One thing is for sure, these guys will settle for nothing short of fulfilling their dreams and rising up as Canada’s most dynamic rap revolutionaries.
Currently, Varietechniches have held raucous live shows at venues such as the Great Hall (Blanche Nuit) and Ciao Edie. Varietechniches have also had two of their songs, “Hard Game” and “Can’t Sleep,” featured in an episode of the hit CBC series “Intelligence.” Look out for their new album “Gamblers” available at Moog Audio/Slinky Music and other select stores this Spring 2008.
