"91 X"

Steve West from 91X

Judging the music
Since I came to 91X eons ago the local music scene has always been a vibrant, thriving one. Thanks to people like Tim Mays, Jerry Herrera (Spirit Club now Brick By Brick) and countless others who have helped nurture and promote the swelling support for local artists. Thursday I was invited to be a judge in The Freedom Sessions at Canes, one in series of events to showcase some of the best talent in San Diego. (Next one is this Thursday.) Let me first point out that all 4 bands were better than average, however, the first band to play, was, as it turned out the best of the night in my opinion. I have seen countless bands over the years, most are average but every now and then one comes along that makes you sit up and pay attention. Circa Now had a presence that is rare, the bass player Scotty immediately made me think of Jack Black in Tenacious D.

The set was pretty much flawless, with great chemistry. Sometimes a three piece can be more cohesive than a four or five piece. But it was how they ended the session that really drew my attention. Josh the guitarist/vocalist started playing a riff that I know too well, the opening riff from "Paint it black" but what followed was the most creative interpretation of "Paint it black" that I have ever heard. The perfect end to the set. This brings me to another point. Josh came up to me much later in the evening to give me a copy of the CD, he was extremely courteous and polite, a fact that didn't get overlooked. "Kiss" and the title track "100 watts" are 2 stand out tracks on their CD. This is a band that is going to go way further.

Circa Now
May 3
San Diego's music scene never seems to have a shortage of young, brash rock bands. There are so many, in fact, that it's a surprise these groups can still thrill. And yet every few months a new contender steps forward ready to give an adrenaline rush. Currently creating a buzz is a hot new trio, Circa Now, performing at The Casbah on May 3. They take their name from the title of a Rocket from the Crypt, giving a clear indication of their mission: to play loud and aggressive, with guitar work and songs to match. Mission accomplished.
