"Never Going Back (CD Review)"

In keeping with the motto “who needs enemies when you’ve got friends like mine?”, Michael Vdelli, the angular, Aussie blues rocker curses out at his ex-lover in the title song of his new album “Never Going Back”.
?If, in times past -- and relying on the co-authorship of his long time drummer, Ric Whittle -- Michael Vdelli came along with a few small filigree excursions and subtle surprises, this year he seems to want to ram his head straight through a wall.

Shaggy and unshaven, completely in the spirit of such paragons as ZZ Top and AC/DC, Vdelli cranks up the amps up to 11 and spits out his anger at so many would be brides.

Occasional ventures into the Rory Gallagher (grandiose slide-guitar on some tracks) and Ted Nugent camps sharpen the band’s focus and make it unmistakably clear that “Never Going Back”, in the truest sense of the word, is all about classic rock, fabulous old school and will, without exception, bring every rock fan who digs smoky, roaring, sandpaper vocals and sharp tongued guitar licks and riffs great pleasure.

The only condition: Play it loud!? - Hooked On Music, Germany

Review:
Even after over 20 years in the music business and more than 10 albums, the infernal Vdelli trio can still influence the scene. Their latest trick, NEVER GOING BACK, continues the Australian’s impressive row of albums.

Armed with overflowing energy and a fine hand for memorable riffs, Vdelli sets to work on their latest creation. They wager everything on the saturated power of the guitarist, singer and eponym Michael Vdelli, who refines the edgy songs with his voice as well as his fluent and dynamic guitar playing. This is of course in no way intended to depreciate the rock-solid rhythmic foundation that his congenial band partners, Ric Whittle (drums) and Leigh Miller (bass) continually create.

The power-trio comes across as bluesy, powerful, gritty and hungry on NEVER GOING BACK, almost as if it were their first album. Determining high points within such a high concentration of quality is difficult, naturally. The brazenly catchy “Down the Line” that distinguishes itself with its disarming melody line, its light-footed shuffle rhythm and the vocals which are reminiscent of Tom Jones (yes, right, the Tiger!) should definitely be mentioned. NEVER GOING BACK is a “must-have” for blues-friendly rock fans familiar with the names ZZ Top and Lance Lopez.

Verdict:
With their latest work, the Australian power-trio Vdelli serve us cleanly played southern / blues-rock, garnished with crisp licks, grooving bass lines and a whiskey-soaked, nicotine-steeled voice. The sound is as dry as the Sahara and the songs are as luscious and fresh as a spring meadow.

Listening Tips:
"Change the View", "Coming for me", "Down the Line"

"Never Going Back (CD Review)"

“Got to get over you/ got to get myself together before I get too old”, sings Michael Vdelli on the opening track of his three piece’s latest album Never Going Back, yet on the strength of their annual Eurotours including repeat appearances at Sweden Rock Fest, the only thing these guys aren’t over is hard rocking blues.

The cover shows a hot car moving at high velocity through a desertscape, and that’s the band summed up – moving forwards fast with high octane power, pedal down hard and looking dead ahead, all eyes on the finish line.

It’s not just the Michael Vdelli show though. Sure, his raw vocals and beefy guitar are the centrepiece, but it wouldn’t mean half as much without such a tight and grooving rhythm section – comprised of drummer Ric Whittle and bass player Leigh Miller – underpinning proceedings with style, power and grace.

Highlights are everywhere, from Dream Girl Nightmare’s unconventionally catchy melody and forceful slide solo, the cautionary drug tale of FIFO workers that is On The Mines On The Pipe, Vdelli’s steel guitar dripping in old blues for Friction Addiction, the high octane Western Desert rock of Love Me Or Leave Me and it’s soaring solo that flits and darts around hot and dry like a zephyr, the Tom Jones singing a blues shuffle of Down The Line, or the righteous boogie of What It Is That You Been Missing.

If anything, Vdelli are even more intense and tight live, which explains the repeat visits to the old countries. Never Going Back should, if justice be served, extend that touring far and wide, finally seeing them offered some festival stages in their homeland and The States.

"Never Going Back (CD Review)"

To my embarrassment, I admit that I started to take note of this band and its mastermind and namesake, Michael Vdelli, way too late and anyone who is into dirty, D-I-Y, Blues Rock should swiftly remedy this situation.

To cut to the chase, songs with inimitable groove, boogie and shuffle, slide and swamp and heavy rock await the listener on this third Jazzhuas release from the combo from Down Under.

Michael Vdelli is a truly great guitarist. Ric Whittle (drums) and Leigh Miller (bass), coolly build a wall of rhythm -- reminiscent of AC/DC’ian’ perfection -- for the ‘meister’ and serve as a foundation for his artistry on the six strings upon which he runs riot.

Even so the solos are never over the top or boring, but inventive and exciting. ‘Never Going Back’ is a wicked…no a super wicked album and I can no longer remain objective. Listening to this music is awesome!!

"Never Going Back (CD Review)"

A thoroughly powerful sound assaults the listener of the latest Vdelli studio work “Never Going Back”.

It’s a true steamroller of an album. But the brilliant songwriting of the Australian Blues Rock-Trio’s guitarist/vocalist Michael Vdelli makes it easy to get over the hammering.

"Never Going Back (CD Review)"

Over the course of several years, the Australian Trio Vdelli has earned a considerable reputation with us. After countless sweat-inducing shows, this act has risen from the eternal insider tip to arrive on our doorstep thus earning the recognition they so deserve.

And since partnering with the enterprising label Jazzhaus Records, Vdelli releases are now available here. With ‘Never Going Back’ the band’s boss, vocalist/guitarist Michael Vdelli and his two comrades-in-arms, Leigh Milller (bass) and Ric Whittle (drums) continue to stylistically expand the blues-rock realm.

Highlighted by a grungy sound, you’ll groove to psychedelic elements, get down and dirty Rock ‘n’ Roll parts, traditional blues sounds and much more.

All 12 tracks, much like the convincing opener “Change the View”, “Never Going Back”, “On The Mines, On The Pipe” or “Friction Addiction” go directly to the jugular leaving a long lasting effect in their wake.

Never one to beat around the bush, Vdelli gets straight to the point, with some credit for this direct sound landing squarely in Kim Goodlet's lap whose mix on ‘Never Going Back’ is superb.

Equally superb are Michael Vdelli’s in your face and obviously highly personal lyrics. This honesty in combination with the music/songwriting comes across as being absolutely real.

A superb album of timeless quality.

"Power Guitar from the Land Down Under"

?Once again the Australian Power Trio proves it's a major leaguer with this heavy hitting recording with a depth of sound that comes up to the level of the 2009 Kevin Shirley produced gem 'Ain't Bringing Me Down'.

Their blues roots come through at times as in the acoustic slide number 'Friction Addiction'. More often than not the guys, Michael Vdelli (vocals, guitar), Leigh Miller (bass) and Ric Whittle (drums) find their salvation in rocking the mighty guitar sounds a la Van Halen, AC/DC or ZZ Top.

The super heavy 'Coming For Me' gets even more down and dirty than the dudes from Texas. Thanks to the inclusion of highlights like the easy goin', countrified 'Down The Line' this album has no trouble qualifying for the genuine songwriting category.

Bio

VDELLI was formed in Perth, Australia in 1997. The band quickly acquired a local following and got to open for acts like ZZ Top, BB King, Buddy Guy and Kenny Wayne Shepherd.

Through intense touring the group also gained an audience in Europe, and their eighth album ”Ain’t Bringing Me Down” (2009), produced by Kevin Shirley (Aerosmith, Iron Maiden etc) was the first to see a European release.

On the follow-up ”Take A Bite” (2010), VDELLI displayed a more versatile side of their personality.

With the current release "Never Going Back" (2013) VDELLI are pushing the boundaries of blues rock and grungy blues with furious rock songs.

The trio’s famously intense liveshow is significant, with vocalist/guitarist Michael Vdelli as the obvious focal point.
