Velikovsky

BandRockJazz

Velikovsky is a hard-hitting, high-energy rock band with a light touch and a jazzy twist. Our shows are full of energy, awesomely executed jams, engaging and singable lyrics, and intriguing dynamics. Our preoccupation with jazz shows in our obsession with tone and our entirely improvised solos.

Biography

Velikovsky was formed by William Netherland and Xavier DeCamps in the summer of 2010. Our first official show as a full band was in November of that year under the name The Velikovsky Affair. Having begun with two core members, we now have four core musicians and have shortened our name to Velikovsky. Our band is named after Immanuel Velikovsky, a mid 20th century author and innovator. Like Immanuel Velikovsky we want to challenge the way people think of things, believing that popularity is not the best foundation of an idea. We want to stretch the way people think about music, ideas, and life. We use our instruments and any stage as a means to play and to sing and to dance. Velikovsky plays a style of music mainly consisting of rock and jazz without being jazz-rock. We are obsessed with improvisation and tone. Each member is a multi-instrumentalist and as a band avidly seeks to challenge the level of each member's musicianship. We also strive to challenge our fans with new ideas for music and performance while never losing our primary goals. Those goals we have as a band for our fans are best stated in one of our tunes called "Straight And To The Point" - "I'm just trying to make you dance. I'm just trying to make you shout. I'm just trying to make you sing. I'm just trying to bring you out."

The Castanets And The Night

Written By: William Netherland

Can you hear me? And tell me are you liking what you hear? Can you hear me? And is it music to your ears?
Yes, yes, said the night to the castanets. Yes, yes, said the night to the castanets.
Can you feel me? Can you feel me wrapped around your skin? Can you feel me? And is it enough to make you sin?
Yes, yes, said the castanets to the night. Yes, yes, said the castanets to the night.
No ser ciego. ?Me puedes ver bailando para ti? No ser ciego. ?Me peudes ver bailando otra vez?
Si, si, dijo los castanets a el noche. Si, si, sijo el noche a los castanets.
And they danced.
And they danced 'til the night grew old.

Song For A Deaf Man

Written By: William Netherland

This is the way we like to think. This is the reason we are so frustrated. And I have a song I'd like to sing. But I don't know if anybody's listening.
What good is being healed of blindness in the dark?
This is a song for a deaf man, being sung by a mute man. This is a painting for a blind man, brought to life by a dead man.
This is the reason that I try. But not the motive that I wanted to entice. These are the words I often speak. And these are the echoes that will never reach my ears.
What good is feeling soft to hands with leprous scars?
This is a song for a deaf man, being sung by a mute man. This is a painting for a blind man, brought to life by a dead man.
Why can't you hear me? Why can't you hear me? Why can't you hear me? Why can't you hear me?
What good is being healed of blindness in the dark?
This is a song for a deaf man, being sung by a mute man. This is a painting for a blind man, brought to life by a dead man.

No With A "K"

Written By: William Netherland

Hello my name is, but you don't give a damn. I'd introduce myself, but I know you know who I am.
You tell me what you want, but I don't give a damn. You tell me this is how it always is it's all been planned. O really?
Is dark the opposite of light? Is day the opposite of night? Or not?
I know you know I know more than this. You know I know you know what it is. I know you know I know what you want. You know I know you know what I got. And it's all right here.
You sing the first verse. You sing the second next. You put them in that order, trust me I can tell what's left.
Or not.
I know you know I know more than this. You know I know you know what it is. I know you know I know what you want. You know I know you know what I got. And it's all right here.
