"Mile Run Delivers Upset Amid Twists at Millrose"

By ANDREW KEH
Published: January 28, 2011
The tone of the 104th Millrose Games was established early Friday night at Madison Square Garden, when the Velveteen Playboys, a shimmying, sharply dressed rock band, took the stage — or, in this case, the track — to jam their way through a multi-song set.

After more than a century, the Millrose Games maintain their position as a singular event in track and field.

"Velveteen Playboys Debut New CD at Foxboro Venue"

Showcase Live audience rocks out to Mansfield's Paul Souza and his band
FOXBORO - The Velveteen Playboys and their part-Energizer Bunny, part-David Lee Roth frontman Paul Souza made it a compelling CD release party at Showcase Live Friday with the debut of their latest CD "Shakin' Not Stirred" produced by three-time Grammy winner Bob St. John.

Mansfield resident and music industry veteran Souza and his band had the audience rocking early with their hybrid of swinging rock and danceable pop, characterized by a driving beat and virtuosic instrumentals featuring guitarist Robert Holmes and all-world sax man Bob Gay.

Souza, sporting a shaved head and a hipster's uniform of sunglasses sparkle shirt and black pants and vest, made a strong bid to challenge legendary frontmen Roth and Steven Tyler in the charisma department, dancing and gyrating about the stage. At one point he waded into the audience and mounted a low wall to lead the audience in the chorus to the band's "Lucky Day."

The audience's response to the band's music was clear early on as the crowd filled the large dance floor and bopped enthusiastically to beat despite the fact that none had previously heard any of the tunes.

The 10 original tunes on "Shakin Not Stirred" brought forth recollections of MTV's 80s heyday - rocking hard and partying all the way. From the opening number "(Nobody Loves Me) The Way You Do" to the uplifting "Big Rock Wall," the band's music is filled with energy and danceable grooves. With the added sophistication of the band's musicianship - especially Holmes (Til Tuesday, Aimee Mann) on guitar, Gay (David Bowie, Chaka Kahn, Bee Gees) on sax, former Wynton Marsalis drummer Anthony Steele and Entrain bassist Lenny Bradford - The Velveteen Playboys seem to have the muscle to back up their considerable musical audacity.

Nuf Said, a talented jazz-funk-pop quartet of youngsters from southeastern Massachusetts did themselves credit opening the evening, followed by the Jamie Lynn Hart Band.
