Biography

When VenueConnection formed in 2002, their mission was to “sail the uncharted waters of Afro-American music in Spain”. Original members Javier del Aguila and Fara Alvarez started their exhaustive journey with the slightly unconventional lineup of guitar, sitar and computer programming on their internet-only release, Orange Light in the Panton Room.

For their 2005 debut disc, the Madrid-based duo decided to recruit a vocalist who added a warm soulful dimension to their electronically enhanced grooves. Strawberry Swan Lake, featuring current lead vocalist Angeles Dorrio, was greeted with positive responses on a few internet sites. Yet del Aguila and Alvarez expressed disappointment with the final product. This perfectionist attitude furthered their cause to sharpen their musicality and redefine their groove niche.

With only six years under their belt, VenueConnection had evolved from an electronic jazz soul trio to a culture-bending funk ensemble on the 2008 follow-up, Madrid Boogie. Three years removed from Madrid Boogie, the VenueConnection members have topped themselves with their biggest pride and joy to date, Fire It Up!, that delivers sizzling funk, tasteful slow jams and passionate vocals by Angeles Dorrio and Karl Frierson.

Fire It Up! from del Aguila and Alvarez’s label, Keepin’ The Groove, beckons jazz funk’s golden era, the late ‘70s age of Herbie Hancock, Patrice Rushen and dozens more. Thanks to the crisp foundations from drummer/percussionist Miguel Cabana and del Aguila’s swift bass guitar lines, VenueConnection nails all the groove pockets with shear precision.

The groove-filled party on Fire It Up! is inviting in every way and is by far the best work from VenueConnection. With this project, VenueConnection has also their place in Spain’s soul/funk market and effectively extended their brand to the rest of the world.

HIDE & SEEK

Written By: FRIERSON / PROCHAZKA / DEL ÁGUILA

We’re gathered here together

Partaking in this wine

Forgetting ‘bout our troubles

Now it’s party time

After all this searchin’

Finally we’ll find

Pleasure in togetherness

And perfect peace of mind

Get out on the dance floor

Do what you wanna do

For a lifetime you’ve been searchin’

The connection has found you

Hide and seek, seek and ye shall find

Hide and seek, seek and ye shall find

Hide and seek, seek and ye shall find

Hide and seek, hide and seek

Come out of your closets

And from behind those trees

Crawl out of your caves

‘Cause you don’t have no disease

This groove is universal

That’s better than worldwide

So glide down from your galaxies

There’s no more time to hide

Get out on the dance floor

Move how you wanna move

For a lifetime you’ve been searchin’

Now the connection has found you

Hide and seek, seek and ye shall find

Hide and seek, seek and ye shall find

Hide and seek, seek and ye shall find

Hide and seek, hide and seek

I WANNA KNOW

Written By: DORRIO / ÁLVAREZ / DEL ÁGUILA

I wanna know, if you are my love

Then why you get me on the wrong track?

I’ve got to know, if I stay with you

Then what do I have to expect from this thing?

You’re wasting my time

I must be blind

But something inside

Is keeping me tied

I wanna know, where is the light

Of this never ending dark road?

I’m trying hard but I can’t help it

You are my drug, my living energy

I need your strength, your heat, your influence

When I am with you I don’t want nothing else

I wanna know, if we’re doing well

Then why do I have to keep on fighting?

I need to know, if I give you all I have

How come you treat me so bad?

I’ve got to find

How to unwind

The way to enjoy

And release my mind

I wanna know, what is the end

Of this long lasting story?

I’m trying hard but I can’t help it

You are my drug, my living energy

I need your strength, your heat, your influence

BÉSAME SOL

Written By: FRIERSON / PROCHAZKA / DEL ÁGUILA

A few years back I met this cats in the city of Madrid

Not gatos from the ghetto, truly righteous nothing hid

Now I’m a lounge and Hip Hop cat, damn right, a pioneer

Southern Born, got all that charm plus European flair

The passion for the groove and the need for gravity

Brought us close together and it became our destiny

El Marqués de Cáceres put is in the right direction

And I let it be known, that I’m a proud amigo of this here VenueConnection

Looking at the sun with my S.G.’s on

Welcoming the kiss from the morning sun

Looking at the sun with my S.G.’s on

Bésame Sol

We did some joints, and made our point and vibed like Holland and Dosier

When “Madrid Boogie” hit the air, ha, ha, we knew there’d be no closure

From Madrid to Moscow and Tokyo and more

Radio City Music Hall we’re knocking at your door

Now close your mouths you ain’t see no ghost, it’s me just havin’ fun

I’m Marvin, Luther, Isaac and Teddy rolled up into one

And ask me how I do this, I’m just a talented son of a gun

Doin’ my thang with my head held high laughing at the sun

Looking at the sun with my S.G.’s on

Welcoming the kiss from the morning sun

Looking at the sun with my S.G.’s on

Bésame Sol

Nunca me dejes sol, never leave me alone

HAPPINESS

Written By: FRIERSON / PROCHAZKA / DEL ÁGUILA

Lots of money, chillin’ in my zone

Sexy thang beside me, full of silicone

Beauty and compassion, calls me on my phone

I’m a drunk man searchin’ for my house

Did I ever have a home?

Time for us to think what we think in harmony

Time for us to say what we say in harmony

Time for us to do what we do in harmony

Release us from this prison, we always had the key

Happiness is something you can’t buy with money

If you’re searching for it, then you’re wastin’ time

Sweet serenity will bring her to your doorstep

Open up let her inside

What would happen without material things?

Maybe we would find the door we forgot way back when

Walk up to the window and welcome the sunshine

And escape this prison to another state of mind

Time for us to think what we think in harmony

Time for us to say what we say in harmony

Time for us to do what we do in harmony

Release us from this prison, we always had the key

Happiness is something you can’t buy with money

If you’re searching for it, then you’re wastin’ time

Sweet serenity will bring her to your doorstep

Open up let her inside

SO DIVINE

Written By: DORRIO / DEL ÁGUILA

Hanging out with some friends

Coming from far away

Searching for the right place

Where we could stay

Finally we found it

A perfect space to sway

Everyone was dancing

And the vibes were great

Then I saw you there

Looking at me

Couldn’t wait a minute

To get closer

When I talked to you

I found out that

We were meant to be

When I looked into your eyes

I was quickly mesmerized

It wasn’t hard to realize

You were just one of a kind

Driven by the music vibes

I made the best decision

I came to find my twin soul

Following my intuition

So here we are right now

Living life our way

Making grooves together

And surfing through the waves

When I saw you there

Looking at me

Couldn’t wait a minute

To get closer

When I talked to you

I found out that

We were meant to be

When I looked into your eyes

I was quickly mesmerized

It wasn’t hard to realize

You were just one of a kind
