Venus de Milo

Venus de Milo

BandPopRock

Leftfield pop of a jazz-rock-funk fusion diposition! Intelligent lyrics, infectious rhythms and crunchy guitars... guaranteed to make you think, feel and dance!

Biography

The band member's differing backgrounds (rock/ jazz/ soul/ experimental) means a fusion of styles is inevitable - their sound is unique as a result, and yet their appeal is as broad as their influences.... combining funky rhythms, unusual changes, catchy licks, rocked out guitars, serious vocals, stage presence and that je ne sais quoi to move the crowd in every way. People at our shows dance at one song, become lost in another, and well up at the next - their feedback not ours!!

Angie Mack Biog
Angie built her music collection from a young age, taking advantage of London's eclectic club scene by DJ'ing with residencies at Plastic People, The Blue Note, Sweatbox and Babushka. But she began to get frustrated with the limitations of playing other people's music and decided to put her song and poem writing to use. Her love of jazz led her to the open mic circuit, singing regularly at the Jazz Café in Camden, Spice of Life in Convent Garden and Efra in Brixton. She collaborated with a number of bands, including US- based jazz fusion outfit 'Dawson's New Rage' ( www.dawsonsnewrage.com). Never one to tread the middle ground, she constantly seeks to re-define her own limits, and hopes VDM's music reflects this - falling to the far left of the pop bracket, but at the same time blending intelligent lyrics, heart-felt melodies and infectious rhythms into commercial songs. Is she bothered about selling out? "That's a cliche that long ago reached its sell-by date". Guess not. Don't expect self-apology from Angie. She cites years of graft between various mind numbing day jobs, and a dedication to the music, as license to bang her own drum. "Now I just hope someone's listening!"

Ricky Sharma biog
Guitarist Ricky Sharma 'Sutra' first picked up a guitar at the tender age 11 after "hearing Jimi Hendrix's Purple Haze". Although distracted by offers to tour Europe with his school's classical ensemble on flute, he soon started gigging with his first rock band at just 16. Here he developed his songwriting style, as sole composer. The band fell apart soon after reaching the semi finals of the nationwide talent contest UK Talent Search, however Ricky was bitten, and had already earnt his reputation as a rising star. People were going to have to get used to him with a guitar strapped to his back. As well as being lead guitarist for Venus de Milo, Ricky currently gigs with London-based JCB, which serves his wide ranging musical tastes. Influenced by soul, Motown, funk, blues, rock, jazz, classical from an early age, he has been writing and composing music for as long as he can remember. Since meeting Angie Mack in Venus De Milo, Ricky has explored new musical ground, feeding a growing interest in jazz and more non-mainstream music. Ricky's aim for the future? To bring Venus de Milo's perfectly blended leftfield attitude to the masses.

If you say so

Written By: Angie Mack

If you say so

Spent my first twenty years on the set of Charlie Brown
People talking, pretty pictures but I couldn’t make the sound
Tried to work my way into a life with players all around
But their games are empty like my dreams, my feet don’t touch the ground

Why can’t I wake up, for this dream has ceased to be
Amusing, black and blues now colour my reality
Why can’t I shake off your tired residue?
You’re frothing at the mouth and I might catch something from you

If you say so, If you say so
You say so, but I don’t
If you say so, If you say so
You say so, but I don’t

I’ve been more than accommodating, waiting patiently
You see I’ve never been sore, ‘cause karmic law has taken care of me
Of your cynically limiting view I’ve had enough
You’re sure you have the upper hand still you don’t call my bluff

Why should I give up, my power to your words?
Your dog-eared script, is full of clips & sound bites that you heard
How can I live up to something I didn’t choose?
You talk plenty but I don’t see you wearing out your shoes

If you say so, If you say so
You say so, but I don’t
If you say so, If you say so
You say so, but I don’t

There’s too much hot air in this room and
You might just sweat off your attitude and
Your camouflage will fall like tears into the sea
And then you might just be real, well maybe

Why must I replay this record every night?
The de ja vu I have with you, even that you deny
I hear what you say, the volume’s way up high
But you’re distorting all the truth you used to have inside

If you say so, If you say so
You say so, but I don’t
If you say so, If you say so
You say so, but I don’t

Don't Know

Written By: Angie Mack

Don’t know where we are
Navigation’s not operational
We’ve come too far
Nothing’s working

Don’t know where you been
You’re map is disintegrating
It seems obscene
You’re not even listening

I don’t know who you are
I feel like I’m sinking
In deep, too far, too far
The dark’s got me thinking

It must be sunny around me
‘Cause when I turn around I see
Shadows behind me
They’re only there to remind me
That I don’t know
I don’t (don’t) ever (ever)

Ever know where we are
Magnetic fields full of weeds and there’s
No north star
Touchstone’s gone

Don’t know where to go
Decision is hidden it echoes the words
When I tell you we’re slow
Light is, fading

I don’t know who you are
The way we’re behaving
Makes things too hard, too hard
The dark’s got me thinking

I don’t know who you are
I feel like I’m sinking
In deep, too far, too far
The dark’s got me thinking

It must be sunny around me
‘Cause when I turn around I see
Shadows behind me
They’re only there to remind me
That I don’t know
I don’t (don’t) ever (ever)
