Verónica Ferreiro es una joven cantante y compositora gallega que procede de una familia de músicos, y llena de música.

En el año 2008, se pone al frente de su propio proyecto junto a Sergio Fernández (director musical, bajista, arreglista, productor), forman su banda y empiezan a tocar en directo recorriendo gran parte de las salas de España y participando en numerosos Festivales de Jazz españoles. Pero no será hasta el 2010 que todas esas experiencias e influencias musicales tomen forma de composiciones propias y decidan plasmarlas en un disco. Así en Diciembre del 2010 suben a A Coruña, entran en los Estudios BRUAR con Javier Ferreiro como técnico, y comienzan las grabaciones del disco.

En cuatro días intensos de ambiente familiar y convivencia, en absoluto directo, bebiendo del jazz, del neo-soul, del folk, de lo más moderno, de lo más tradicional, a caballo entre lo orgánico y lo sintético, entre lo acústico y lo eléctrico nace: LAIO.


“LAIO”, ese es el nombre que dará título al primer álbum de Verónica Ferreiro. Verónica abraza con nombre propio un proyecto que significa el comienzo de un concepto, de una entidad, de una manera diferente de entender la música.

LAIO son raíces, cultura, corazón, nostalgia, nuestros miedos, nuestra fragilidad como seres humanos, nuestras esperanzas, nuestra fe hecha música en el sentido estricto de la palabra. A finales de ese mismo año, graban el álbum en los Estudios BRUAR de A Coruña, Verónica y su cuarteto ( Sergio Fernández, productor artístico, bajista, contrabajista; Rubén García, teclados, pianos, Rhodes; Chuchi Crespo, batería; Diego Lipnizky, guitarras; y la colaboración especial de Roberto Somoza, flauta y Carmen Rey en la voz). - www.jazzeando.com.ar

En los tiempos que corren no es habitual encontrarse con joyas como ésta.

Nos hemos trasladado por un ratito a Galicia para escuchar el fantástico trabajo que nos brinda Verónica Ferreiro, en lo que es su primer álbum "Laio" y que se compone de diez temas.
No viene sóla. En esta travesía de años de mucho esfuerzo hasta ver materializada toda esa entrega, ha recorrido el camino junto a Sergio Fernández, Rubén García, Chuchi Crespo, Diego Lipnizky o Javier Ferreiro, entre otros muchos; y ya sea en el bajo, guitarra, piano, arreglos, composición... lo cierto es que el conjunto es un elegantísimo sonido, que nos evade en cierta medida del ritmo frenético del día a día.

El disco ya está a la venta y en la primera semana de noviembre "Laio" consigió ser número 1 en la lista de Jazz de iTunes en España.

Based in Madrid, Verónica Ferreiro is a dynamic young galician singer and composer. At age six, she received a cassette player from her parents and began recording her own melodies and lyrics. Coming from a family of musicians, this only came naturally.

In 2008, she began the journey to create her debut album, LAIO, which is set to release this September. In partnership with bassist, producer, and musical director Sergio Fernández, Verónica has created a project that beautifully weaves together jazz, soul, and folk. Blending Spanish and English effortlessly, she borrows sound from anywhere that inspires, “LAIO is roots, culture, heart, nostalgia, humans’ fear and fragility, hope and faith made into music of the purest kind.”

Veronica Ferreiro comes from Galicia in Northern Spain, but now lives and works out of Madrid where she's a popular attraction on the Spanish capital's thriving jazz scene. She's been working on this, her debut album, since 2008. Clearly she works in a painstaking way and has the determination to get everything right – even a quick listen makes that self-evident. The ten tracker has a real polish and production values are high. The music is the lady's take on jazz – with a Spanish twist, though in places there's a real soul undercurrent that recalls the work of the great Carmen Lundy or Tania Maria.

Most of the songs are sung in Spanish but (despite the language problem) the music communicates through its passion and in its groove. The two songs that open the set are particularly strong. The LP's title cut gets things going. It's an upright bass-led item with a laid back feel while what follows – 'Non Quero Crer' (a duet with Carmen Rey, who wrote the song) is a gentle and relaxing swayer. Both cuts feature some sparkling piano from Ruben Garcia. 'Riverside' has a gospel feel about it, very different to the enigmatic, lengthy '20' which is fragmented and complex – not an easy listen.

The best of the English items is the atmospheric 'Floating Lovers'. It's spacey and eerie and a great prelude to the beautifully sung ballad 'Please Don't Fall In Love'. Interesting too is the album's closer – 'Auf Wiedersehen' which (as you can see) combines German and Spanish lyrics... an adventurous idea and for those who like discovering adventurous vocal jazz, 'Laio' is worth investigating.
