"The Veriations EP"

The Montaj Review on
KeyofGee.com

By DJ Funknatra

Hard to believe that this is the first set from Ms. Veronique, and as far as quality goes, this sista has pipes, delivering a set as equally strong as the artist she's compared to. The world renown DJ Aaron-Carl plays a part on this set, but the spirit of his excellence is symbiotic with that of Veronique. Now the choice of the style of music has, for some, caused a bit of puzzlement; a fact played nicely upon in the title of the album. I hunted for her 1st release the acclaimed CD single "Use Me" in a major store in Detroit last year, only to find it tucked away in the dance section only. As if.

From the on-set of the vintro, to the stand up & shout incisor sharp "Use Me" & "Faith", the opening dialogue definitely explains where she is in her faith, if unless of course you are a less informed listener. "Beautiful"! This follow-up a funky groove with a sexy bassline and Caribbean percussion thrown in for good measure. A salvo of questions hit the chaps from a number of voices asking whether it be neo-soul or house, the answer according to the soulful chorus is...this is a wonderful fusion of soul and deep house. They are not finished there, though. "Alright" is a splendid track and is receiving a lot of interest of DJ's stateside.

In this offering, a message is sent to ALL about not allowing any of life's daily grind to waver their belief .

Superb, superb, superb. If this isn't enough to log onto www.veronique313.com and order a copy,or go to www.myspace.com/veronique313 to listen to "Beautiful" and the Sunday morning remix version of "Use Me" by none other than Mr. Aaron-Carl himself, a reflection of their latest single. This EP is extremely strong, and certainly sits alongside the best of the current crop of heavy hitters. Please do NOT ignore this release. It should be a punishable offense not to own a copy! - KeyofGee.com

"Veronique "Veriations - the EP""

Veronique's follows up her last years debut single "Use me" with the wonderful new release "Veriations - the EP". On this EP, we see Malik Alston and Aaron Carl doing production and mixing, while Veronique impresses with her songwriting and vocal skills. "Faith" has a classy old-school touch to it and features a male preacher spoken word alongside wicked keys and Veronique's passionate vocals. "Beautiful" is on a laidback tip, with a smooth groove leading the way for the vocals, sweet percussion and melodic chords. "Alright" is a duet with Aaron Carl that is nothing else than irresistible with the deeply stompin' groove, lush keys and outstanding vocals. Completing the package is last years gospel house smash "Use me". - Michael Fassati - Spiritofhouse.com

It's tough to review just a radio edit, especially as the remixes of this, I've been told, are sick. Nevertheless, you can get a good enough idea of this self-produced single by singer Veronique. This is basically a cry of surrender to the Good Lord Above. There's a heavy gospel influence without resorting to the standby gospel choir background - it's a very personal track, about one individual, and the solitary vocal really makes it work on that level. Deep strings in tandem with a Rhodes provide the accompaniment. - Review by Chain for 5Chicago.com | Published September 2007 | Review Archives

Bio

Soul singer Veronique exploded onto the scene with her debut gospel-house single, "Use Me." in "07. Her new EP "Veriations" is comparable to other House divas like Dajae, Kim English or Ultra Nate, Veronique's earthy yet powerful voice has that old soul feeling. You can't help but be moved.

Her musical influences include gospel legends Kim Burrell, Vanessa Bell Armstrong and Yolanda Adams, as well as R&B/Soul icons Chaka Khan, Stephanie Mills and Patti Labelle.

Born in Maryland, raised in Detroit, Veronique's musical gifts were evident at a very young age. A self-taught keyboardist since the age of 3, she began singing in her church choir at the age of 4. Eventually, Veronique moved on to direct the choir, and now serves as the Minister of Music for her church.
