"Artist of the Week"

Will Marion (guitar/vocals), Wes Burkhart (bass), and Steve Schramm (drums) make up the power trio, Vicarious. Their debut performance was this past Autumn at The Coffee Bean in Dobson with Idiomatic Phrases. They returned to TheBean last night, 26 FEB 06, as the main event of a three band Rock feast.

And they returned ready to Rock. They came with more of everything. There were more songs, more amps, more guitars, and even a keyboard. And there were those nifty little oriental lights. Overall it was a great show.

Vicarious began with the Black Sabbath classic, "War Pigs," and their delivery of that piece was much improved from the band's debut performance. The show ended with a cover of Cream's "White Room," in which Will gave us a taste of his skill with the Wah Wah. In between they played a few interesting originals, most of which were delicious head-banging melodies.

Throughout the set Will moved between three guitars and for one song he let his fingers dance across the ivory of his Doors-style electric piano. In most of the songs Will would leave from chopping out power chords to pulled off well-rehearsed shreds while Steve and Wes backed him with a full, busy rhythm. In one number Wes showed he could pick-strum the bass as well as finger-pluck the instrument.

And Wes showed he could do verbratos and tone-notes on the bass as well. Steve's drum set sounded great -- the cymbals rang crisp and true, and his arrangements were creative yet solidly proper. Will was all up and down the neck with long, limber fingers spanning five mid-neck frets easily.

It wasn't a flawless night. There were some tempo troubles with "Jailbreak." At the end of that one and in good humor Steve flung the earphone of his new metronome from his ear and swore off the device. And there were other minor little mishaps that can plague any live performance, even by the masters (as per the loudly dropped drum stick at the end of "Stairway to Heaven" from Led Zeppelin's "The Song Remains the Same" LP). But overall Vicarious demonstrated they have talent, they have been improving, and they are ready to Rock.

This is one of those bands that clearly could have a future. But as a single entity of Rock, Vicarious may not be with us for long. Wes, Will and Steve are High School students facing college in the near future. But each of the musicians now making up Vicarious will certainly have individual futures in the music industry. Meanwhile, we'll do our best to keep you informed of any upcoming Vicarious shows. You can best keep up with the Vicarious schedule by adding their site, found here, to your list of favorites. - www.mayberrymusic.net

Bio

Hailing from the foothills of North Carolina, Vicarious resurrects a definitive sound remnisent of the early days of rock n' roll. While the band claims many influences it is apparent that their music relies on the old ideals of rock n' roll mixed together with contemporary sounds and beats. After playing together for only 4 months, Vicarious has already caused quite a stir in the Northwestern section of North Carolina.
Will Marion (Guitar/Vocals) is a classically trained singer who puts his excellent writing skills to use in songs such as Y.O.U., Jailbreak, and This One's For You Toby. However, the strongest part of Marion's arsenal is his powerful baritone voice that can fill any concert hall with a rich, warm sound.
Wes Burkhart (Bass) is a true virtuoso when it comes to music. Wes plays the 5-string like he was the very one who invented it. He has participated in bands since the age of 11 and has grown a reputation for being one of the premier bass players in the region.
Steve Schramm (Drums) is a newcomer to the area and a relatively new drummer. However, if you were to hear him for the first time newcomer would be the last word on your mind. Steve has come to master the art of odd time signatures and is quite good at powering the band along with his precise rhythms.
The newest member to Vicarious is Corey Moser (Guitar/Vocals) a great guitar player who showcases his talent in the band's covers of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs" and Molly Hatchet's "Flirtin with Disaster."
This band is a must hear, three of the members Wes, Will, and Corey have been playing together for about 4 years and Wes and Will have both been accepted into the prestigous Belmont University School of Music. Vicarious is sure to provide a breath taking, head banging, fist pumping, energy filled show at any venue large or small.
