"Vidar - Yet EP (2011)"

"VIDAR, Svanen @ Jazzhuset 16th June 2011"

The last Svanen of the year before a brief summer shutdown saw a respectable turnout and a first Gothenburg gig for 3 Karlstad girls who had impressed us all at InmyKitchen one chilly Saturday morning in early Spring with some stunning harmonies and melodic loveliness.

I was intrigued to see how the 3 piece would fare in front of an indie club crowd, there to dance and drink and with a limited collective attention span. Not the easiest crowd in the world certainly, and a good test for a group with a folk tinged sound.

The band started well and got better, the sound was spot on from the outset, the band room at Jazzhuset proving to have great acoustics when full of bodies. It is the impressive execution of their music that really hits you, with harmonies that are absolutely on the money and without a single flat note to speak of throughout. Their songs have an ethereal quality, with lush melodies all underpinned by 3 voices that fit together perfectly. When it came to the a-cappella number Ships, the crowd were silent in appreciation of the harmonies, no mean feat in a nightclub at midnight. As the girls closed out with the undoubted show stopper What did I know, they had the crowd well and truly won over.

As the gig ended I spoke to a punk fan and Siouxie and the Banshees obsessive who said that although not her cup of tea by any means, its hard not to appreciate something when its done so damn well. High praise indeed and a fine nights work from a group full of potential.

Bio

Raised on the pop and folk classics of the 1960s and widely exposed to the live Swedish folk scene by their parents, Swedish sisters Tuva and Maija Hardorp along with childhood friend Emmy Deivert went on to form VIDAR in their mid teens.

Beautifully knitting together tight vocalised harmonies with stripped down thoughtful musicianship they have created their captivatingly heart-warming indie folk sound.
