"Viet Kong"

"So me and my plus one for infinity (yay the JB) had planned to go down to Austin to catch our last Clutch show for 2008 during a weekend in early October. Things didn't work out though, but we had a great Saturday night hang in Dallas and I got the chance to finally check out Viet Kong from Denton. To my dismay they don't have anything out on disc quite yet but, man, do they bang it out live on stage. We're talkin' RIFFS, readers, RIFFS! Stuff that gets your head nodding along, even if you're hearing it for the first time. Singer Jason Ashley has a likeable style that make things even more of a cinch and drummer Will Jaeger is stellar to watch especially when he swipes his stick across his mouth while pounding out percussive piledrive. Viet Kong are a must see live band and it's so good to know they're just one of the handful of groups around DFW who are flying the flag high when it comes to frothy, fuzzed out ampcrush."

"Viet Kong"

Viet Kong played their second show ever in Ft. Worth at the Peppermill last Saturday night. They got the middle slot of a 3 band line-up and came across as veterans.

First and foremost, they brought almost 30 friends with them from Denton and Dallas - a hell of a drive. The bar had to make an emergency run for more beer in the middle of their set. It is nice to see a band that understands that ROCK is spelled B E E R.

As for the music, ole' school metal with a fresh new twist was the name of the game. The Lotus Lords was my favorite tune of their set. The guitarist has that Nerd-turned-super hero look and slams you with his stone age riffs. The bassist appears to have straight out of a Cheech and Chong movie set and rips the bass like Geezer. The overwhelming presence of the singer and his witty communications with the crowd just added to his controlled raw vocals. And then there's the drummer...a loony bin escapee I guess...Keith Moon meets Cozey Powell. You gotta see these guys for yourself. I give them the highest of my recommendations.

Enough said. - JC da Horn Monger

Bio

"Leighton Chance and Jason Ashley had been roommates since 2007. One day in the Spring of '08, Leighton mentioned his idea for a 70's rock band and Jason asked if he could try out on vocals. The two jammed together, then added guitarist Nick Dourgarian (on bass this time around), and everything just clicked. The three wrote song after song for a few months and then one day they met Mr. Jaeger. After randomly contacting the recently named Viet Kong, Will Jaeger set up a time to rehearse with them and by the end of the first song they were a band.

Since then, Viet Kong has been writing, demoing, and perfecting their take on classic rock adding influences from more modern rock bands and even taking on themes from 70's horror and war films. Known for their intense live shows, singalong anthems, and raw sound, Viet Kong is quickly growing into one of Denton, TX's most wanted bands."
