Vinalog

For artists, novelty isn’t an option but a fate they should accept. Some say bringing tradition to posterity can be recognized for its value only when it integrates the changes of the times and expresses one’s individualities. That’s why sori singers in the past warned against simply imitating the songs of others. Such plain mimicking of sori was often dubbed as “photographic sori.”

Those who have decided to produce traditional music that can also appeal to the public in these fast-changing modern times must feel a greater responsibility to produce creative tunes. That’s why they have to keep studying and striving to take on new challenges. Some traditional musicians leading the trend are the world music group, “Vinalog”. We will meet them in today’s program. First, here is “Chicken Run” by Vinalog.

The group’s name “Vinalog” is made up of words “vinyl” which refers to a black record disc and the term “analog.” The name means to pursue sounds that give the listener a rich and warm feeling.

The group was formed by four young musicians in 2003. The members are Jang Jae-hyo, who is in charge of percussion and song; Lee Yeong-seop who handles wind instruments such as the daegeum, the sogeum and the danso; Yang Seung-hwan the man in charge of composition and the piano; and Lee Sang-jin who plays the guitar.

With their sensuous melodies and rhythms, Vinalog’s pieces have been well received by young listeners. By gaining recognition for developing a model for Korean world music, their music piece was selected for the 2007 Performing Arts Market in Seoul. And, in a first for a fusion gugak group, Vinalog had the chance to perform at the New Year’s Day ceremony held at the presidential office of Cheong Wa Dae.

Two members – Lee Yeong-seop and Yang Seung-hwan – left for New York shortly after to study music and advance their skills abroad. So, the group had to put their musical activities on hold for a while. After a brief hiatus, the group is now back together. These days, Vinalog is showcasing different kinds of music by collaborating with other indie bands.

Just recently, the group won the top prize in the fusion gugak group section at the Jeonju International Sori Festival held in the city of Jeonju. Their achievement attests that the path they followed was worth it and the group is heading in the right direction. For the second piece on the show, here is “Neoyeongnayeong” by Vinalog.

That was “Neoyeongnayeong” by Vinalog. So, what does the title “Neoyeongnayeong” mean? It means “You and I.”

Even if people are busy just looking ahead, they know it’s important to take a break and look at themselves to discover and pursue a different path from others. But it’s easier said than done. Hopefully, Vinalog can make it big on the global stage and give hope to Korea’s traditional music scene. For the final piece of music on the show, we have “Land of Morning Calm” by Vinalog.

Vinalog는 레코드 판(LP)을 지칭하는 은어인Vinyl과 기계적 의미에서 Digital의 상대적 개념이라 할 수 있는 Analog의 합성어입니다. 이는 곧, 보다 풍부하고 따뜻한 질감의 소리를 추구하는 팀 구성원들의 공통된 음악관을 표현한 것입니다.

프로젝트 그룹 바이날로그는 한국의 전통음악을 깊이있게 경험하고 외래의 다양한 장르의 음악을 두루 섭렵한 연주자들이 뜻을 모아 만든 일종의 퓨전밴드라 할 수 있습니다.

따라서 바이날로그의 음악적 여정은 한국의 전통음악에서 느낄 수 있는 감성을 바탕으로 그 음악적 재료들을 현대적인 감성으로 풀어내고 엮어내어 누구나 쉽게 따라 부를 수 있고 가볍게 즐길 수 있는 형태로 새롭게 만들어가는데 있습니다. 이에 바이날로그는 보다 진지한 자세로 국악이나 외래의 음악, 어느 한 쪽으로의 치우침 없는 자신만의독특하고 개성있는 음악 형태로 대중들에게 다가가고자 합니다.

또한, 바이날로그는 상업지향적인 음악이 아닌 진정한 의미에서의 대중음악을 표방하고 있습니다.

[헤럴드경제=정진영 기자] 월드뮤직 그룹 바이날로그(Vinalog)가 오는 15일 오후 8시 서울 한남동 현대카드 언더스테이지에서 ‘진화’라는 주제로 콘서트를 벌인다.

바이날로그는 레코드(LP) 판의 은어인 ‘바이닐(Vinyl)’과 ‘아날로그(Analog)’의 합성어로 지난 2003년 결성됐다. 바이날로그는 지난 2004년 정규 1집 ‘랜드 오브 모닝 캄(Land of Morning Calm)’, 2005년 2집 ‘투 월즈(Two Worlds)’를 발매해 그해 한국대중음악상 ‘최우수 크로스오버&재즈’ 부문 후보에 오르며 음악적 역량을 인정받았다. 또한 바이날로그는 지난 2009년 우즈베키스탄에서 열린 사마르칸트 국제음악제 2위, 2012년 전주세계소리축제 소리프론티어 대상 수상, 2013년 말레이시아 페낭 국제 재즈페스티벌 초청등을 통해 꾸준히 한국의 월드뮤직을 알려왔다.

바이날로그는 “이번 콘서트에서 총 12곡을 선보인다”며“베이시스트 정주영, 기타리스트이자 인디펜던트 멀티미디어 예술가인 최의준, 거문고 연주자이자 보컬리스트인 이재하(Neige)의 가세로 재즈, 펑키, 일렉트로닉 사운드, 영상을 활용해 전통 음악의 발전된 모습과 전통음악을 바탕으로 한 다양성을 보여주고자 한다”고 전했다.

티켓 예매는 인터파크(http://ticket.interpark.com)에서 가능하다. 티켓가는 전석 스탠딩 2만2000원, 현매 3만3000원이다.
