"It's Time - CD Review (2012)"

"Kathie Renner’s newest project has perhaps taken off even more successfully than even she may have envisioned. Fronting Adelaide trio “Vincent’s Chair” their newest offering “Its Time’, released 2010 has captured the attention of audiences internationally where they have recently returned from a tour of the UK and Europafest.
?
Their album is discernibly indefinable, except perhaps to say it should be allocated only to the ears of those wishing for a pleasant and soulful mix of folk, jazz, pop, and the highest quality arrangements of its sensual blend of guitar, piano and viola. Renner’s voice is soothing and uplifting and her lyrics truly unable to be categorised, a fact that perhaps allow the trio to play wherever their musical whims may lead them.
?
A feel of loose improvisation hides the fact that their arrangements are actually cleverly crafted to ensure one feels wrapped in a blanket of the most delicate melodies. One of the smoke and mirrors type sensation one feels after this album has been on repeatedly for hours, as I found it difficult to turn off once on. The Sultry jazzy feel of “It’s time” contrasts sharply with the quirky and upbeat happy go lucky melody behind “I can’t see”. This track is highly contagious and the alternating rhythmic sections with the light hearted shakers opposed to the Joni Mitchell like rambling lyrical feel is reminiscent of the abstract musician Renner clearly has felt a musical affinity with.
“Another Time and Place” commences with a very lounge feel and develops into almost a Miller-Heideke type story being told by Renner’s crystal clear voice. De Nardi's beautiful viola is showcased heavily through the album yet in a subtle and clever way, patricianly in tracks such as ‘Do Something”, where she weaves in and out of the picture with ease.
?
Vincent’s Chair is an extremely affable trio who would not be out of place in most venues, or the homes of many folk enjoying any kind of real, original music. An album especially for musical souls needing ‘some real music’ that refuses to allow itself to be boxed or stereotyped."

"The Promethean Concert with John Baker Duo"

Vincent's chair, led by vocalist/composer and instrumentalist Kathie Renner and featured Karen De Nardi on viola, and award-winning Hugh Stuckey on guitar.
With inventive arrangements the folk-flavoured group produced a variety of tonal qualities, alternating melodic, unison between different pairs and Stuckey's jazz influenced guitar solos.
Renner's voice is strong and and interesting and her songs, mostly from the new CD, "Stretch", tend toward social commentary involving irony and sadness. Many of these compositions were musically interesting and their lyrics were often of literary quality. "A Father's Sin" told a dark tale of incest while "Looks like rain" used viola and guitar in an almost Baroque intoduction. - The Advertiser

"Adelaide Cabaret Festival 2008"

This local trio is hard to classify. They play mostly originals written by leader/vocalist Kathie Renner in an indie-folk style. With Karen De Nardi on viola and Hugh Stuckey on guitar, Renner at the keyboard sang a program of personal songs, many from their CD, "Stretch". Her voice was clear and precise, and the arrangements worked well, with Stuckey taking a few jazz-tinged solos. One departure from their originals was a pleasing version of Cole Porter's "I've got you under my skin", and another was "A case of you" by Renner's major influence, Joni Mitchell. This is contemporary, folk-influenced alternative music that is neither ethnic nor ear-splitting; it's easy listening and softly accessible. - The Advertiser

Original jazz-folk-pop
Vincent's Chair is an Adelaide based Australian trio featuring singer-songwriter, Kathie Renner, viola player, Karen De Nardi, and guitarist, Sam Leske.

Exquisitely sensitive, passionate and alluring, Vincent’s Chair creates a music experience that defies stylistic classification. Lyrical compositions reveal unexpected stories couched in honest musicianship with delicate tastes of the jazz pop and folk idioms.

Influenced by the likes of Joni Mitchell, Sting, Paul Simon and Pat Metheny, the trio produce music from gentle bossa novas to jazz ballads, African township grooves to haunting melodies.

Formed in 2006, one of the group's first performances was in Europe as part of the Europafest festival, held in Bucharest, Romania. Since then the trio have recorded two cds, and performed in numerous venues and festivals in Australia and abroad.

In 2012 Vincent’s Chair delighted audiences in Europe and the UK with their unpretentious revelation of quirky and touching stories. Their intimate set up of voice/keyboard, guitar and viola gives perfect balance to the delicate, yet, dynamic interplay between musicians as they draw you into an exquisite journey of the senses.

2014 saw the release and launch of their fourth studio album, The New Vibe, at the Space Theatre in the Adelaide Festival Centre, and a tour to Paris, the UK and Germany to showcase it there.

2013 saw them return to Europe, this time to play some dates in Germany and the UK, as well as the recording of a new cd.

Singer-songwriter, Kathie Renner, has been crafting songs for twenty-something years and has released several CDs of her own in addition to three with Vincent’s Chair. Kathie is also a finalist in the 2005 Australian Songwriter’s Association awards, and has performed in several ensembles and festivals. A gifted vocalist, Kathie makes certain that every song she sings gives a true representation of herself.

Karen De Nardi is a classically trained viola player but her performance experience is broad. Her work has included stints with Diesel and Savage Garden, Ruby Frost Quartet and freelance classical work. Karen is a founding member of Vincent’s Chair and brings a warmth and sensitivity to the ensemble sound.

Guitarist Sam Leske is one of Australia's hardest working musicians. A much sought after player, Sam is a highly gifted guitarist, well versed in most styles. To date he has worked with some of Australia's high profile performers such as Debra Byrne, Peter Combe and Jayne-Anne Power.

The trio are sometimes joined by a percussionist and a double bass player.
