"Hitting a High Note"

Without question, succeeding in the music business is hard work. While “making it” in show business is tough, sustaining an artistic passion while holding down a day job can be even more challenging. Vincent Masci, ’83, is following his dream of singing stardom while pursuing a career path as a working musician, and his debut CD is proof of his dedication.

As with many musicians, Masci’s road to the headliners’ spot wasn’t a direct journey. After majoring in fine arts and design at Buffalo State, he worked in theater and as a puppeteer for several years. Still, Masci’s love of music was a constant.

Adopting the stage name Vinzent Massi and developing a highly dramatic onstage persona, the vocalist began performing daring arrangements of pop standards that earned him a devoted following.

For his new CD, Cover Me Eclectica, the musician recorded 10 songs that span decades, genres, and borders.

“It took about a year and a half to complete, and I put my heart and soul into the project,” said Masci. “I sing one song in Italian and one in Spanish, plus there are plenty of songs to get up and dance to.”

Possessing a baritone voice with enough range to ably handle everything from classic rock to Latin, Masci, who works in Buffalo State’s College Senate Office, is proving himself as a versatile and powerful vocalist.

Bio

In the spirit of professionals in the entertainment maze; Vinzent Massi is solely unique. His love of performing came at the early age of10. It was not until later in life did he gather the courage to finally tackle his demons and go for it. He studied voice for ten years; has written and performed his own music, and starred in his own music video for his song "Hollywood Hell" He continues to pursue his dreams and goals as a singer ready to reach for the stars. Vinzent has been compared to Josh Groban, and Michael Buble'; two of his favorite performers; as well as having European flare and appeal, with elegance on stage. Though with all great singers; his voice is his own; and he copies no one. His voice is uniquely emotional, yet superbly strong, and dynamic. Vinzent has lived a very difficult life. As with most artists, he wasn’t favored among his peers, or by the popular vote. He was pushed aside and around for most of his life. He has faced discrimination and badgering. He endured much emotional harassment, and sometimes physical. He says, “Abuse at any level, and at any age damages the soul; not just the mind”. He continued on against many obstacles, and less than deserved support from his community. He has also suffered the loss of many family and friends, some taken way too soon, such as his beloved father Demetrio from a sudden heart attack in 1990. He has watched those he loves suffer from cancer and luckily by a miracle his dear mother Nancy overcame a horrible bought of breast cancer (stage 4), “You look at life differently when you see your immortal parents are anything but immortal.” Never take for granted is his philosophy today, for life can change in an instance. He did the rounds of theatre, both community, and professional shows. In the mix he also created marionettes of his favorite singers and began to perform at any event possible; just to get the exposure; hoping that he could ride the tails of his puppetry into a singing career. He confesses that “I used my marionettes and puppets to overcome a terrible sense of self worth and stage fright, mostly brought on by years of emotional harassment. He did end up on the second incarnation of the ‘Gong Show’ in Hollywood California. He won his episode, shown on national television. It was the “America’s Got Talent” of the time. Then came his time to sing getting over the hurdle of stage fright he wanted to not just center on one genre, Vinzent loves the sounds of music around the world. He wants to bring a unique musical experience to his audience and educational one as well. He wants to take his audience on a journey of music, of life, of love, and spirit. Blending cultural boundaries and taboos, with the rich sounds of beautiful music; he wants to share the music of the world, showing that in the grand scheme of things music is what binds us all together. Giving Africa and the Mid-East credit as to where all music evolved from; influences from those geographic locales are still prevalent in today’s music. He dismisses most of the terrible sounds emanating from the music biz today. Hip-Hop and Rap are not created from love, but of someone’s self loathing. That is not music and is an insult to any cultured and educated singer. He might offend some with his candid opinions, but he insists that he has earned the right to express his opinion. “I have paid my dues, but the ’tax man’ still wants more” So Vinzent Massi continues onward to find his nitch. He knows that people will love his offerings, and for many that have heard his voice, and his music; they are captivated immediately. Vinzent has performed in Buffalo, New York City, Toronto, Rochester, Phoenix and Las Vegas. He gives all of himself in any performance, and will continue to search for that special place where he will be accepted. “I will be in the Guinness Book for waiting the longest for my break.” The only record he wants to make though is that of music, and with luck and fortitude he trumps forward to find professional representation to boost his public awareness and performances. Vinzent has written and recorded several of his own songs and has collaborated with other songwriters as well to record. When he is onstage his number one job is to see that you forget your problems; and escape with him into his world, even for just a brief moment; into his world of a fantastically different genre; the world of music, the universal language. Peace and Love, and Laugh at life and yourself as much as you can.
