Violet Nine is every A&R person's dream. There is something so fresh and alert about this band. Imagine the space rock of Radiohead minus the experimental drone, unintelligible lyrics, and fear of computer takeover. Add the eager dynamics and velocity of power pop bands like the Foo Fighters and take away the immature antics and the airwalk. Now top this all off with a lead singer that manages to bring to mind comparisons that range from George Michael to Bono with his agile voice, charismatic stage presence, and stone-washed jean jacket.

The effect is keenly crafted without being contrived. Without compromise, Violet Nine manages to be radio-ready and resolutely original. Violet Nine's catchy four song demo displays the pristine vocals and conscientiously created melodies of singer Ben Consoli within Violet Nine's animated musical setting. Drummer, Greg Faucher and bassist Tom Gallo are the band's active rhythmic backbone providing a kick and a bass that are like one determined percussive pulse. Guitarist Nick Lewis uses few notes in his expressive solos, but each note feels utterly natural and perfectly chosen. Finally, guitarist John Ducharme provides the energetic, swirling rhythm guitar parts that are the subtle underlay for all the songs. Members of the band each have moments on the keyboard adding electronic textures and understated piano layers. Despite all of these instrumental elements, there is never a moment where an instrumental part or a harmony seems to have no purpose. The music is decidedly designed without seeming overly calculated or heavy and serious. Overall, this band's intense, inventive style is captured on its excellent four song demo – all four songs are hits. If this EP is any indication of what is to be expected from a Violet Nine's future albums, then listeners have much to look forward to.

"Their 45-minute set proved to be even better than their CD. Energetic, original, charismatic and fun. They have not pigeonholed themselves into any one genre of music. Violet Nine has this ability to create such smooth melodies behind a strength that doesn’t overdo their music; it is the blend of perfection."

Violet Nine has been receiving an overwhelming BUZZ in and around the Boston area within the past year. I received their CD about a week prior to the show, and from the moment I put the CD in my car, I found myself playing it continuously. Strangely, I did not get sick of hearing it, in fact, just the opposite; I needed to hear it “just one more time”. From the first day I played it, I found myself humming one of their tunes subconsciously as I awoke the following morning. In all my years of hearing new music, this experience has not been a common one. It made me realize that I needed to see these guys live and take in their performance first hand.

Their 45-minute set proved to be even better than their CD. Energetic, original, charismatic and fun, these 5 guys more than please the crowd. Often building their songs to a climax, the positive energy fills the room exciting friends and fans. Both rich in harmonies and powerful in delivery, Violet Nine is the real deal; hard working musicians fine tuning their craft and enjoying the journey. Greg Faucher is a kick ass drummer! He is tight, on point and powerful to the punch. Nick Lewis’ spastic release on his guitar aids in bringing the audience to the boiling point of their songs. Tom Gallo relays a sense of stability and structure through his impressive bass playing. John Ducharme is a talented guitar player, letting his emotions come through the music, which is always refreshing to witness. And Ben Consoli is a powerful angel; his voice is a gem, a treasure - the creation of greatness that deserves more recognition.

Although some have said that they are a hybrid of The Foo Fighters, Radiohead, and U2, I have a few more to add to the list: The Tragically Hip, Blind Melon, Phish and even add in a dash of a trip-hop and drum and bass vibe into the mix too. They have not pigeonholed themselves into any one genre of music. Violet Nine has this ability to create such smooth melodies behind a strength that doesn’t overdo their music; it is the blend of perfection. Their music is melodic rock on the forefront with a jazzy backdrop that compliments them. They are lyrically creative, stylistically unique and musically soothing.
You need to get to a Violet Nine show and see what these guys can do live. They have the potential for super-stardom. Violet Nine are currently an unsigned band, but not for long, I imagine. Rumor has it that the major record labels shopping them are plentiful; it’s just a matter of who is going to be the first to take them off the market. See our live photos of the show in our photo section. For upcoming shows in your area and more information, check them out at www.violetnine.net. Mittens and The Mobius Band opened respectively.

Boston's Violet Nine is only five guys, not nine, but I guess bands have to name themselves something, and Violet Nine is as good a moniker as any other, even if its significance is questionable. These guys appear to be garnering quite a buzz in their local scene, and a large part of it is probably due to the fact that they know how to plop down the melodic hooks without beating you over the head with them. The EP's three songs are catchy and radio-friendly without being overproduced or too compact. Streamlined electric guitars snake through these nuggets of nearly romantic pop-rock, providing an atmosphere rather than a kick in the pants, but the real highlight is the vocals. The lead singer has some great pipes -- you heard me, he can actually sing , folks! His voice never shakes when holding out a note, he never yells when reaching into the high register, and there are no silly ploys like whining or growling. The stellar singing gives the album a soulful quality -- especially on "All Eyes", which could pass for a turntable-less Incubus song thanks to watery guitars and some smooth jazz drum work. Violet Nine might be a bit too clean-cut for their own good, but their ear for melody and their ability to carry it out make them worth keeping an eye on. - Phillip Buchan

- Pat Healy

"Violet Nine rocked the joint with fervor" - Steve Morse
