16-year-old Trevor Wood met a 15-year-old Chandelle Ashley Gleed in their small, Northern Nevada high school just one day after he completed a seven-month stay at Western Nevada Regional Youth Center, for reasons Chandelle’s grandmother won’t allow this bio to mention (it wasn’t too bad, but it’s a good thing those days are behind him).

After noticing a picture of Jack White on Chandelle’s binder, a quick bond over similar musical tastes developed. But the irony of the situation was that although Trevor had just been released from kid jail, Chandelle was living in one -- her oppressive mother’s.

Just listen to Vitamin OverDose’s “Astro Van Blues” -- a raunchy, slide-played number culling memories of, well, early White Stripes -- and you are given a little peek into a modern day Romeo and Juliet, but instead of family rivalries, you have an insane woman in an Astro Van patrolling the streets, ensuring that these two could never have the relationship they craved, let alone start a band.

For two and a half years, Trevor and Chandelle snuck around behind Chandelle’s mother’s back as much as they could, but the prospect of having a band together was impossible. Trevor played guitar in a punk band, and Chandelle wrote dark folk songs on an acoustic guitar in the bedroom she was seldom allowed to leave, and unless you count the time Chandelle told her mom she was staying the night at a friend’s house in order to play bass in Trevor’s band, their musical relationship was nonexistent.

But finally, Chandelle turned 18, and the two hit the road for her grandmother’s house seven hours away in Las Vegas. It is there where their relationship and the band they were never allowed to have under her mother’s rule could finally flourish.

There’s nothing too esoteric about Vitamin OverDose. It is the product of two teenage lovers kept apart for years, a shitty town, a crazy mother, and what happens when all this angst is passed through a filter of complementing musical tastes, producing raunchy blues grunge with shared vocals that any fan of The White Stripes or Nirvana could get behind (in fact, like Jack White and Kurt Cobain, Trevor -- who’s responsible for the riffage behind “Astro Van Blues” -- is also a drummer, actually handling most of the duo’s pounding).

These days, Trevor and Chandelle find themselves in a prolific writing and recording routine, booking as many shows as possible, busking for tips on the Las Vegas Strip instead of getting jobs, enjoying each other’s company, and not always looking over their shoulders for an Astro Van.

But after all they’ve been through, Chandelle still gets spooked when she spots one.
