"Vivienne Black and Lady Grey @ the Old Bar 15/6"

Last night I trundled down to the Old Bar in Fitzroy to see my friend Vivienne Black's gig. She supported Lady Grey, who played solo. Both women have beautiful voices - in the lower register VB's has a dusky voluptuousness while Lady Grey's is warm and authoritative. I should have taken my camera.
With a few of her like-minded friends, Ms. Black is putting on a Billie Holiday tribute show in the Melbourne Fringe Festival later in the year. I regret I will be out of the country but of course applaud the womens' initiative. - nicopedia

Flowering Camellia, EP 2010

Vivienne came to singing and songwriting 4 years ago.

Vivienne Black's music is amused and heartbroken, life as it is and life as she would have it. All delivered with her signature voice - pretty, bluesy, captivating. A performance with intrigue and soul.

Teaming up with singers around Melbourne, notably Steph Brett, and amazing songwriters like Alex Dando, Vivienne's folk blues has lyrical qualities of her idols Leonard Cohen and Rufus Wainwright wed to melodies that belie both her love of blues and classical teaching as a violin student.

Forming an creative alliance with viola player Roh Savage has shaped the romantic swell of Black's current play list.

After touring her Billie Holiday Tribute Show, Black's songwriting has become more rhythmically blues.
