UNICORN RECORDS is proud to announce that the CD Greeting form Nostradamus from Vladimir Badirov will be release on the label on the 1st of October 2004.

Uzbekistan drummer Vladimir Badirov is playing with a lot of renowned artists in Russia. Since 2002 he played with Uzbekistan national actress, singer Nasiba Abdullaeva. As a session musician he worked with the talented young Uzbek singer Sevara Nazarkhan with which he appeared on the Russian TV show "Apology" hosted by Dmitry Dibrov. They also performed a series of concerts in Moscow, and had a successful Japanese tour.

In 2003, together with Sevara and her musicians, Vladimir worked as member of the "warm-up-band" in the Peter Gabriel's "Grown Up" tour in Europe and America.

While working with other musicians, Vladimir has never put aside the idea of creating his own project, and as a result, he recorded and released his first solo album "Greeting from Nostradamus" with 11 compositions representing a symbiosis of modern rhythms, electronic sounds and splendid oriental colors along with traditional Uzbek folk instruments - Nai, ud,
tanbur, karnai, sato, were used for the recording of the album. In the hands of professional performers, they had given a really unique sound to the album.

Saluti da Nostradamus!
Jazz, rock, tecnologia e musica tradizionale nel nuovo disco di Vladimir Badirov, il grande percussionista dell'Uzbekistan!


Batterista sopraffino, percussionista vivace, "prezzemolino" degli studi di registrazione dell'Uzbekistan, Vladimir Badirov è il classico artista che, grazie a mille collaborazioni, ha assorbito come una spugna linguaggi, idee e umori.
Il suo primo disco solista "Greetings from Nostradamus" ne è la prova, sebbene a prevalere siano gli interessi jazz-fusion e world music, ovviamente assemblati in modo tale da risultare appetibili anche al pubblico rock internazionale.
E' così che sonorità tradizionali e loops, chitarre rock e melodie orientali si fondono nelle 11 tracce del disco. Il supporto della Unicorn Records, poplare etichetta nel campo prog-fusion, è significativo: Badirov ha infatti coinvolto una vasta rosa di musicisti dando al suo lp l'impronta di un progetto aperto, di una grande jam in cui si sposano Peter Gabriel e Djam Karet, l'ultimo Miles Davis e Trilok Gurtu, gli Ancient Future e Marcus Miller.
I vocalizzi imbizzarriti (opera di Ravshan Namazov) e la fusione funk-jazz di "Nomad in time" e "Lay back, Nasredtin" ci riportano all'esperienza dei Venegoni & Co.; "Ultimately for Screwy DJ" si salda alle ultime tendenze del nu-jazz ma anche alle idee dello Zawinul Syndicate: possenti basi percussive (acustiche e campionate), bassi corposi e brass section che si intrecciano a tipiche melodie uzbeke.

Vladimir is a drummer from Uzbekistan, and although he has been working in various bands and projects over the years this is his first solo album and it is quite different to anything that I have previously heard. As he is a drummer this is where the songs first come from and the result is music that is moving around on different rhythms. He is also trying to mix different cultures so as well as electric guitars there are also traditional Uzbek folk instruments such as nai, ud, tanbur, karnai and sato. With brass also playing their part (not all instruments are on every track) this is something very strange indeed.
The guitars can be rough and dirty with heavy bottom end distortion, or they may be clear and clean or they not be on a particular track at all! Although it has been released by Unicorn, who are much more well-known for progressive and jazz rock, this can only be treated as world music as it is bringing in so many folk influences and to my Western ears this is quite difficult to listen to. Treat with caution, but you may be intrigued.

Il n’est certes pas courant de voir chroniquer ici des œuvres originaires d’Ouzbékistan, ce pays au-delà de la mer Caspienne dont le nom des villes (Samarkand, Boukhara…) évoquent irrésistiblement l’aventure, la route des épices et l’immensité asiatique. Vladimir Badirov est batteur et possède une expérience dans de nombreux domaines (rock, jazz, électro, musique traditionnelle..), tant dans son pays que sur la scène internationale (il a fait, entre autres, partie du support-act d’une récente tournée de Peter Gabriel). Après plus de 20 ans de travail au service d’autres musiciens, Badirov monte enfin son propre projet que le label québécois Unicorn Records nous invite à découvrir grâce à ce CD sortant des sentiers battus.
Disque à ranger sans hésitation dans la catégorie jazz-rock, prog-fusion, Greeting from Nostradamus possède cependant un double caractère qui en fait une œuvre tout à fait particulière. On y trouve, en effet, une structure de base que l’on pourrait qualifier "d’occidentale", avec un jazz-rock à la Brand-X: batterie, guitare électrique, basse, loops et programmations auxquels s’ajoutent par moment une trompette ou un trombone. Cette base est alors enrichie de sonorités orientales par la présence d’instruments traditionnels ouzbèkes: nay, ùd, sato, karnay, duduk… Le résultat est étonnant et inédit, sorte d’ethno-groove au parfum d’Asie Centrale.
Si Greeting from Nostradamus ne s’adresse, de toute évidence, pas au grand public, les amateurs de prog-fusion et les oreilles curieuses y trouveront de quoi satisfaire leurs envies de nouveaux horizons.

La title-track è invece divisa in 5 parti e mostra una band più attenta a parametri occidentali rock, osando soluzioni davisiane e persino reminiscenze Tuxedomoon. La palma del brano più coinvolgente va però a "Artificial paradoxes": chitarre hard rock (il virtuoso Alex Tamaev) e ud uzbeko, ritmi rock squadrati e un clarinetto popolare sono a loro modo un esempio di "globalizzazione".

Meno eccitanti "Dreamway to Scotland" (un meeting rock-dance-cornamuse un po' pesante) e "The heart", coraggioso esperimento world-trance secondo un modello di "tendenza" piuttosto abusato, perlomeno in Occidente. Si coglie comunque in ogni traccia l'estro di Vladimir, anche nelle scelte relative alle programmazioni. "Mechanical city" è una forma di folk-fusion (con il violino di Toir Kuzyiev) che si avvicina alle nuove sonorità del Notturno concertante: Uzbekistan-Irpinia, sarebbe bello vederli dal vivo insieme.
Ricordiamo anche che il cd presenta alcune bonus tracks, tra cui svetta una versione "concentrata" della title-track.
Un bell'esordio, con molte idee da affinare e tanta buona musica.
