"Voice In The Dark Box Set Review"

Best Of

Voice In The Dark - "Best Of". This album is a compilation of Voice In the Dark's choice songs from his other four albums. His style of music is sort of a pop dark wave genre, yet it has a dream-like fantasy feel to it. The singer wants each song to touch every person and through that he believes everyone that listens is connected to him. Each song works together and has a positive message in it. Track 1: "Can You Believe" has an electro pop-rock sort of sound with a strong electric guitar riff paired with a catchy piano tune. Track 6: "How Can We" is a pop style song with intense lyrics about making sure our future generations keep our world alive and thriving. Track 8: "Spread The Vibe Around" has a darker beat to it and is a song about the fact that not everyone is insignificant and we all are connected as a bigger thing and are meant to be here on earth for certain reasons.

Gaia

Voice In The Dark - "Gaia". This album's message is a strong one about knowing you're not alone and that better things are still to come. Track 1: "Alive" mixes the dream like sound with a catchy chorus and vocals that harmonize great. The guitar riff throughout the song keeps the darker feel to it though. Track 3: "Let's Not Forget" is a powerful song with uplifting lyrics telling you to never give up or let go. The lyrics paired with the dark beat give it a different mix that ends up balancing each other nicely. Track 5: "Not Alone" is talking about exactly what the title says, you're not alone and you should never feel isolated. It keeps its dream like feel but also has an acoustic break down in the middle of the song which changes it up a little.

Etheric

Voice In the Dark - "Etheric". This album's songs are a little more uplifting sounding but still keep the dark effect to it. The lyrics are just as powerful sending out positive messages like the other albums. Track 1: "Secret Road" has a great beat and all the instruments work perfectly with his vocals in the chorus harmonizing each other well. Track 4: "Heaven" is a softer song with a catchy beat that has a melodic feel. It uses a strong bass throughout the song and then pairs it with a synth giving the song a floating feel. Track 8: "Never" is one song where the lyrics are a little more sad but the beat still has an uplifting feel with the dream-like synth in the background.

Phoneme

Voice In The Dark - 'Phoneme". Track 1: "Fight For Life" has a strong acoustic guitar riff throughout the song accompanied by a synth piano break down which gives it the unique sound. Track 4: "Injustice Tonight" has a mellow opening and just uses a great acoustic guitar and simple beat that focuses more on the strong lyrics. Track 10: "Can You Hear It Now" is a sweet, uplifting song that is paired with happy lyrics about better things that are coming.

Hikari

Voice In The Dark - "Hikari". This album is along the same lines as the others but near the end has a couple of darker more haunting style type of songs, which makes it a little different. Track 4: "Beautiful" uses more acoustic guitar paired with the darker guitar which balances the song out. Its uplifting lyrics give a positive message about embracing yourself and the world around you. Track 8: "Bow Down" is a creepier sounding song with darker instruments. It also has a slower pace rhythm paired with the singer whispering at random points which makes it a bit creepier. Track 10: "Help Me Now" is a song with just vocals harmonizing together, a couple piano chords and a drum beat. With just these simple things working together the song has a haunting feel to it, which sticks with you.

"Voice In The Dark"

Voice in the Dark is the San Diego pop/rock band that writes, writes, and writes some more. They have a huge catalog of songs that are selective and poignant to certain topics and issues. I've chosen to focus my review on their 2009 release, Gaia.

Voice in the Dark says this about Gaia, "The inspiration driving the creation of Gaia comes from a calling to love our mother earth, remember that it is our responsibility to help others in need, and how vital it is for us to believe in ourselves."

It has elements of Depeche Mode and Morrissey combined with edgy, New Age, instrumentation. It comes out strong on Let's not Forget. Layers of synths and groove to ambient vocals, sets the mood.

On Stop, they employ the acoustic guitar to shine through the mix, as they sing of getting home. Its more angular, but works well. The band is longing and convincing; and it shows in the performance.

Finally on, Can You Believe, the band really shines. The song is set in a clearer and stronger vocal range. The band excels as it works in tandem to create a soundscape any fan of Euro-pop would grab hold of quickly.

Discography

Best Of
Released in November 2010, this album is an 8 song set containing 2 tracks from each of the 4 previous album releases.

Gaia Album
The inspiration driving the creation of Gaia comes from a calling to love our mother earth, remember that it is our responsibility to help others in need, and how vital it is for us to believe in ourselves.

Etheric Album
Etheric looks to impart the value of forgiveness, highlight the truth about personal strength, and rekindle the joy of sharing wisdom. This album also reminds us to take a little time out of our busy schedules to reflect on the magic of our existence and the beauty of our surroundings.

Phoneme Album
This album starts out like a call-to-arms. Songs like "Fight For Life", and "How Can We" stress how necessary it is for us to stay in touch with our instinctual need to protect and value life. Next, Phoneme poses the question: "If nature could speak, how would she sound?". This message is intended to give the listener a chance to ponder humanity from the perspective of our earth and nature itself.
Lastly, Phoneme takes a look at our immortality and the struggle to understand ourselves and our place in this ever expanding universe.

Hikari Album
This album is best described as unpredictable. From instrumental sonic landscapes to full ensemble ethnic chants, Hikari is loaded with twists and turns. Songs like "God Only Knows", "Spread The Vibe Around", and "Beautiful" are singles that explore deep subjects created to inspire the listener to expand her consciousness. Some of the tracks on this album like "Bow Down", and "Help Me Now" are left to the listener to decipher their meanings. These songs are intended to engage and stimulate the mind while eliciting some darker but important emotions. Hikari is the last album of the Voice In The Dark Collection, and is the perfect addition to this 40 song series.

Bio

Bio
Since his first release in 2009 entitled Gaia, Voice In The Dark has enjoyed a steady growth of fans and media exposure via his website, social media, and a variety of music sites including Sonic Bids. While currently promoting his latest set, called ‘Best Of’ , which was released in November of 2010, and contains 2 cuts from each of his previous records, Voice In The Dark spends the other half of his time in the studio working on new material for his Vibes-Grooves-Interludes series which is a bit more electronic/EDM but still with an emphasis on vocals and lyrics.

After 10 years of working behind the scenes in the industry, Arrow, a singer/songwriter/music producer, had begun to feel like a voice trapped in the dark.

With a catalog of well over 100 songs, in mid July of 2008, Arrow set out to produce a musical series that would capture the essence of a message that had dominated his song writing for years. After about 12 months of being enjoyably locked away in the studio, by August 1st 2009 Arrow/aka Voice In The Dark had written and produced a four album 40 song series he was destined to call “Voice In The Dark”.

All of this artist’s songs are created solely by Voice In The Dark. While his original influences range from strong male vocal based acts like Depeche Mode, Peter Gabriel, Seal, Morrissey and U2, there is also an underlying sonic element that comes from Voice In The Dark’s love for electronic acts like Moby, Thievery Corporation, Groove Armada and Massive Attack.
Voice In The Dark’s audiences are sure to get a full dose of heartfelt emotions addressing a wide range of message-oriented topics that are both ‘touching and inspiring’.
