"NAACP event ‘all about the youth’"

UTICA — The focus was on the children Saturday as the Oneida County Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People opened Black History Month at Mohawk Valley Community College.

More than one-third of the estimated 80 people in attendance at the annual celebration were children.

Children from the YWCA welcomed guests to the annual event and were involved in the program.

“It’s all about the youth,” said Craig Grant, chairman for the event and first vice president for the Oneida County NAACP. “Our theme is enduring our legacy that certainly segues into our youth. We need to get them involved, and here they are in leadership roles, not just assisting.”

Delvin Moody, a 13-year-old minister at House of God, was the keynote speaker.

“We want to make sure young people realize what we have and what we have come from,” Moody said. “We have a strong foundation, and we need to build on that. As we move forward, we need to make sure we do it together.”

The crowd participated in a reading about the meaning of Black History Month, discussing how the events of the month highlight contributions of historic black Americans and spotlight current achievements.

“We want to let society know that African-Americans were an integral part of history,” Grant said.

The event was full of music from the Voices of Faith Gospel Choir and poetry readings.

“This is really a celebration and a positive time to come together in unity,” attendee Kenneth Melchort said. “It’s also a chance for people from different churches to come together and honor the Lord and was has been accomplished.”
