Further support for the Smell as a brick cradle of genius was already going off as I loped in off the Red Line at Civic Center later that evening. Most nights the alley fronting the ancient ex-garage is clotted with ladies in aerosol-applied eveningwear and other spillover from the Edison. It was still early, but femme duo Voices Voices was riding a mellifluous blare in the back. More and more, the venue makes me think of a ratbag-indie version of Arnold’s in Happy Days—a hangout for cool kids where everybody gets to be the Fonz—but there’s little of Sweet Gene Vincent or Dion & the Belmonts in Vx2. Such rolling sonorities and deep-space hobo meditations are much closer to Tangerine Dream, so there were a lot of narcotized expressions on dewy faces and two or three fans actually swayed side-to-side, despite extensive post-hippie cultural conditioning. In local terms, VV sound like a lighter Darker My Love or the Warlocks after a thousand hours of nam yo ho renge kyo—a wedge of gorgeous daybreak slicing through a cathedral window stained seventeen shades of black. You can stage the at-home version of this experience by punching up “Tape Noon” (from last year’s Sounds Outside EP) while awaiting their next appearance, scheduled for Spaceland’s Club NME on the intolerably distant date of June 10. - L.A. VOICESVOICES are a two piece atmospheric, seductive, ambient experience from Los Angeles. Formed in June of 2008, these two lovely girls, Jenean Farris and Nico Turner, came together to break away from the musical mold they were confined to in previous projects to defy what they've been taught, and challenge what they know. The result is hauntingly beautiful music that will awaken even your most subconscious dreams and fears. Contributing largely to the new experimental movement, and regular fixtures of DIY venue, The Smell, this is a very talented band whose rising prominence in the LA music scene is undeniable. Fresh off their West Coast Tour presented by Manimal Vinyl Records, VOICESVOICES is working on a full length album due out late 2009.


Who are your main influences?
Our main influences are Aphex Twin, PJ Harvey, David Bowie, Portishead, Daedelus, Caribou, The Kills. So many more.
How did you meet?
We met at a Xu Xu Fang concert in Echo Park.

What is your biggest achievement as a band to date?
We really love to be moved by music and have an experience at shows, and we're now getting that same response about our music from our fans, which we consider a great achievement.

Where did the band name originate?
The band name originated from a thought Nico had about Voices throughout time communicating with us, or how we mainly use our voice to communicate; it's a tool everyone can relate to. Plus, we really like to play with the way words sound together. I guess that means repeating things.

Favorite Bands?
Currently, we're really into some amazing local bands: 60 Watt Kid, EXITMUSIC, Voice On Tape, We Are The World, Caldera Lakes. They're really doing something special and Unique.

Plans to Tour?
We just got back from a West Coast Tour presented by Manimal Vinyl, which was amazing. We went up to Seattle and back down to Joshua Tree playing everywhere in between. Can't wait 'til our next tour! We're really looking forward to touring the East Coast or Europe.

Plans for next release?
We're currently working on recording our New Material. We're shooting for a late 2009 release date.
