"Volatile Baby - Traveling Light"

Consisting of Brenda Gambill, Allison Modafferi and Gina Stewart, Volatile Baby is a talented trio. Their latest CD, Traveling Light is a delicious 47 minutes of three-part harmonies, pontificating pianos and volatile violins.

That’s not to say they’re wild and crazy like rock stars…but they certainly have the ability to mix things up. Traveling Light is an offering to the spirits of bluegrass, gospel and country. It’s a relaxed conversation with friends old and new, and it’s one that conjures up memories of long drives down lonely roads. In short, it has soul.

Vocally, I couldn’t get enough. All three sound great individually, but their real strength shows when they work together. They sound so good, in fact, that they were selected to perform in the Cape Fear River Theatre’s latest River Show production – Wildwood Flower: The June Carter Cash Story.

However, singing isn’t their only talent. Each of these vocally gifted women are also apt musicians, taking on responsibilities with various instruments – including cello, violin, harmonica, clarinet, guitar and keyboards. As a matter of fact, I was about halfway through “Blue Lights” when I had to ask myself why I hadn’t heard from them earlier. Where have they been?

I already like them far more than the Dixie Chicks, but that’s another matter entirely. Suffice it to say that Traveling Light is a gorgeous exercise in beautiful harmonies and soul-searching writing.

I should also mention that the CD benefits from some great engineering and guest star appearances from several other talented musicians, including Don Dixon and Jim Brock. But, without taking anything away from their guests’ contributions, this album lives and dies on the talents of the three women behind it. That being the case, it’s more than safe to say the Traveling Light is alive and well.

"'Traveling' worth trip with VB"

Traveling Light" (Silver Meteor Records)
Rating: 3.5 out of 4 stars

The first thing that strikes you about Volatile Baby is this Charlotte trio's crisp, three-part harmonies. Songs such as the opener, which features harmonies courtesy of Carlene Carter, guitarist Gina Stewart's co-star in the musical "Wildwood Flowers," show off their gospel chops.
They create different moods with creative instrumentation, which is really no surprise considering Stewart and keyboardist Allison Modafferi come from musical theater, and cellist/violinist Brenda Gambill was part of the band Doubting Thomas. Clarinet and harmonica give "Harlem" a lonesome feel punctuated by a chorus of handclaps. Elsewhere they take a raw country route drawing on influences such as the Carter Family. "Long Since Gone" and "Wild Irish Rose" touch on Kathy Mattea-like singer-songwriter pop and country.
From the beautiful cover painting by Charlotte's Duy Huynh, which further illustrates a sense of loss and escape heard in many of the songs, to the rhythm section of producer Don Dixon and Jim Brock, "Traveling Light" is a class act.
Dixon and Brock join Volatile Baby to celebrate the CD release at 7 p.m. Sunday at Grand Central, 1000 Central Ave. (formerly Swing 1000). -- Courtney Devores

Bio

Brenda loves Bowie, Allison loves Tori, and Gina loves just about anything with a southern accent...VB is brand new traditional country... and sometimes VB takes on a neo-classical string influence... but always, the thing about these three women is the harmonies... and the choice of just plain good songs....

they tend to be a little ahead of the rest...people compare them to the dixie chicks....but usually only to say "I like them better than the dixie chicks!"

Volatile Baby is the love child of three semi-southern artists: Gina Stewart, Brenda Gambill and Allison Modafferi. Gina, songwriter, actress and composer for the theatre; Brenda, a songwriter, violinist and percussionist from The Doubting Thomas Band; and theatre director and pianist Allison Modafferi are creating a musical landscape that pushes traditional boundaries and pulls at the listener.

Volatile Baby's new release, Traveling Light is available in May, 2006. Guest musicians include Carlene Carter, daughter of June Carter Cash, Jim Brock, former drummer for Kathy Mattea, Don Dixon and Wayne Jernigan.

Don Dixon (REM) produced their first full length CD and describes the band best: Volatile Baby builds on the grand tradition of female vocal groups while adding their own ingenuity, spirit, instrumental prowess, and joy. Their inimitable chemistry shines through their songs live and in the studio.
