Volunteer Pioneer

Volunteer Pioneer

BandPopFolk

Volunteer Pioneer's music features harp driven melodies set against acoustic guitars, drums, bells and tambourines. Their songs conjure the allure of love and detachment in tales of sinking cities, wavering ships and dead presidents.

Biography

Sabrina and Kyle formed Volunteer Pioneer in 2004 when Sabrina added the sounds of her harp to Kyle's
acoustic guitar. The two set out to create songs that
could be described as "Glamour Folk" and "Luxury
Rock." After Sabrina took time off to tour with Bright
Eyes in 2005, the duo reformed and expanded to a trio when Jason joined on drums in 2006.

Sabrina, whose musical credentials include work
with Bright Eyes, Feist and Rilo Kiley, is finishing her degree in mathematics at Stanford University and will graduate in 2007. Jason has played in several Bay Area bands and runs an art gallery in Oakland. Kyle works in an office and recently was moved to a cubicle with a window.

Influences include the Walkmen, David Byrne, the Fiery Furnaces and Corky Hale.

Other bands don't have a harp and its louder than you think.

Lyrics

Separate Planes

Written By: Kyle Williams

If I'm your tiny wife then you're my tiny husband.
If this is our tiny home these are our tiny chores.
If these are our tiny children then they know we love them.
These are the banks of the Great Lakes, these are our tiny oars.

I think you said that your brother
tried to stab your father through
the wall of your childhood home.
He missed him but still that's something.
He missed him but still that's something.

But don't say you love me that's extortion.
I thought it was you and I that would turn this city into an ocean.
Catastrophe of titanic proportions,
Your parents fly on separate planes to make sure you don't
end up an orphan.

A friend of mine died in the war
it was someone else's twin sister
and now you all owe her big time.

Fear of Cholera

Written By: Kyle Williams

The fear of cholera, the risk of treason,
Disaster follows your family tree.
And I'm so, so sorry about your sister,
I'm sure you know how much we all wish we
didn't have these books that say
We try our predictable passionate list of disguises.
Like the loan ranger,
I know its personal political dangers of nostalgia
And you love revolutions, their canned romantics,
They're for your students and your great great grandpa.
Like if JFK and honest Abe
And William McKinnely and James A. Garfield
Came back from the dead
And started their own synth-rock band
And climbed the charts and set the trends
And broke your heart with their rock and roll hands.

I want to remember everything
I want to remember everything.

The things you say are what you mean
You need a break from this change of scene
And modern architecture sings
The song of lines and the elite to you.

So you're on board headed toward your port of call
A mutiny at sea doesn't mean that its your fault.
We've got some range here with this ship,
You're a danger to us all.
So we will keep our new sea legs
You can keep your western drawl.

I want to remember everything
I want to remember everything.

Adventure Capital

Written By: Kyle Williams

While I was driving I saw then thousand points of light,
The east west freeway takes (they are red and they are white) them across the country.
I pretend that all five thousand cars call in their position.
But the mission with which they are charged remains a secret,
And when I'm sleeping I am thinking I'm aboard
An unknown oceanliner steaming toward the arctic circle.

There must be some there must be some underwater disturbance,
Some creature or device that holds the cost in fear (the cost is clear).
When I return if I return I'll return with a vengeance.
I'll shed this diplomatic edge for something harder (something sharper).
So I report I report to the ship Abraham Lincoln,
Its fated deck and hollow hull I'd say I'm scared (I'd say your prayers)
Because I want you but I want to keep myself out of harm's way
Its just as well that's just harm's way, its such a shame (an awful shame).

This is not the illicit affair I thought it would be.
This is not the buoyed up life I thought I would lead.
These are not the leagues and the depths I was guaranteed.
This is far less compressed air than I thought I would need.

So we drove through the night so empty so pleasing,
I fell asleep and ended up dreaming I was undersea,
I ended up dreaming I was undersea.

Hey lets just keep pushnig
This progress through the ocean
From the top of this cushionless,
Emotionless vessel that I have become.
