Vox & Box

BandJazzPop

VOX & BOX is the collaboration between vocalist Nathan Altimari and guitarist John Townsend that employs jazz standards, soul tunes and original compositions as vehicles for their unique approach to performing as a duo.

Biography

A native of Northampton Ma, Nate is a former horn player turned award winning a cappella vocalist who has traveled extensively with various acts honing his skills of channelling the horn lines in his head through his voice. Utilizing all of his range, Nate uses his voice as a true jazz instrument that has its foundation built on the improvisation and style of the classic jazz vocalist.

A native of New Jersey ( Northampton Ma Resident since 2001 ), John started his professional musical career during the 13 years he lived in Boston. After a brief stint at Berklee College of Music, he performed for years in numerous Boston based bands then segued into a career Managing and Road Managing Major Label Artists. In recent years, John moved on from a professional life in the Music Biz and returned to playing Jazz/Soul music with an emphasis on exploring the boundaries of what two musicians (namely one voice and one guitar) can produce.

Vox & Box established itself in the FALL of 2003 when John and Nate met and whipped open a REAL BOOK. There have been dozens of gigs and numerous original compositions since then.

Although this type of pairing isn't completely unheard of ( Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass; Tuck and Patti)...John and Nate's diverse musical backgrounds present a unique, and oftentimes visceral, approach to playing a "standard" that isn't often seen.

Lyrics

If we let go

Written By: Nathan Altimari /John Townsend

the life we had was ripe with passion, hope and joy
now it's stale and dark and my poor heart feels like a toy
a play thing for you to bend and shape into what you need
soon i'll break and fall apart and all my heart will do is bleed

will we both know if it's the end
are we only here because we've lost our way
can we remain and somehow sustain
something that's not the same
if we let go will we both know

like we were before when we were more in love
the way we felt when we had so much less to worry of
so now I sit and wonder if this truly is the end
or will I salvage what we had and try to start again
I gave you more than I have ever had to give myself
will there be more than half as much of me to give to someone else

will we both know if it's the end
are we only here because we've lost our way
can we remain and somehow sustain
something that's not the same
if we let go will we both know

This heart that I have has lost the war with my mind
I know that I can't remove the doubt of....
a new life for me
and soon I will see
through the woods for the trees
that we cannot be so I let go
