"Jon Atkins & Vox Noctis at the C.I.A."

This is the great
Jon Atkins, lead singer-
guitarist-songwriter and keyboardist
of Vox Noctis, one of the
best bands in all of
greatest & lesser Los Angeles. They
are a passionate post punk power gothic indie band.
I was happy to catch an
amazing
performance by this
quartet at the CIA -
California Institute for
Abnormal Arts, where many of
my previous photos were shot.

Vox has a great CD out
produced by the legendary
Billy Salisbury -
called "Pharmacy" -
you can hear their music
and find out more at

What started as a cover band has become one of the rising stars on Inland Southern California's indie music scene.
Vox Noctis formed three years ago as an Interpol cover band with singer/guitarist/synthesizer player Jon Atkins, bassist David Rodriguez and guitarist Dan Hernandez.
Soon Atkins' sister, Emily Salisbury, joined to play drums and the group started doing original music.

Special to The Press-Enterprise
Vox Noctis, with Emily Salisbury, left to right, Jon Atkins, Dan Hernandez and David Rodriguez, will play at Red Planet in Riverside this weekend.
The band will bring its tunes to Red Planet in Riverside on Saturday.
In its young existence, the Riverside-based outfit, which has shades of Interpol and Joy Division in its sound has already put out two EPs, "Episode Substitute" and "Depressioneering." And last year, the group added the home-recorded full-length, "Pharmacy," to its discography.
Despite its prolific output, the band never expected to win the best indie category at last month's Inland Empire Music Awards.
"We sent our stuff in as a joke," Atkins said.
Instead, the joke turned into a trophy for the band.
"We thought we were going to be announced and that was the most exciting part," Rodriguez said.
Atkins is the primary songwriter for the group, with different parts being marked on a dry erase board for working them through with the band.
"It's pretty formulaic," Rodriguez said.
Recently, the band has been working on new material, but doesn't know if it will turn into a second full-length.
"If it's just five good songs, then it's just five good songs," Atkins said.
But the band's different sound has been a struggle at times to break out of the scene.
Vox Noctis even devised a plan to keep possible hecklers interested when they played before a Sublime-ish band.
They spent a whole rehearsal working up a television theme that would get people into the music. The group chose "Knight Rider" and it worked.
Don't expect future concerts to be full of theme songs from '80s shows. The band's own music is finally getting recognition.
"We've gotten comfortable enough with our craft," Atkins said.
Check out the tunesmiths with Shady Lady and Slippery When Wet at Red Planet, 6192 Magnolia Ave., 9 p.m. Admission is $5 and is open to all ages. For more on Vox Noctis, visit www.myspace.com/voxnoctis.

Bio

Vox Noctis was formed in the summer of 2005 in Riverside, California. Jon Atkins (songwriter, vocals, guitar, synth) teamed up with Dan Hernandez (guitar) and David Rodriguez (bass) to play Interpol covers. In an initial desperation for a drummer, the band reluctantly allowed Emily Salisbury, Jon's little sister, to play. Time went by, as did a few original songs, and it became clear that Emily was an extraordinarily talented drummer, and the band turned into something much greater than anyone had anticipated.

Vox Noctis has released two EPs (Episode Substitute and Depressioneering on Abysmal Records) and an LP (Pharmacy on Steakhouse Records), and is working on their second LP. They have performed at a variety of venues in the Inland Empire, Orange County, Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley, playing to 200 + a number of times.

With an intricate post-punk foundation, the originality and sheer intensity of the songs are impossible to dismiss. The spectrum of influence for Vox Noctis is vast, ranging from Buddy Guy to David Bowie to Joy Division to Sigur Ros. The songwriting is focused and thematic. The extravagant and anthem-esk arrangement of Pathos leaves your spine tingling. The bleak and subtle interpretations of despair on Paper Airplanes sets a lump in your throat. The dreamy guitars, and power and raw emotion of the vocals on Barricades create a dark, spaced-out mood. Each song has something you can hold on to and connect with.

Vox Noctis was voted # 2 on American Songwriter Magazines' Senior Editor's List of Top 10 Favorite Releases of 2007.
