Voyvoda is the band of two origins – Bulgaria and France. Voyvoda is F.S.Filipov, responsible for synths, programming, bass, tambura, voice; Serge, responsible for drums, basement; Kalin- synth; Chiori- bass, voice, synth and Dita Von Veles- synth, voice. The Confederacy is issued on Corvus Records, an independent Bulgarian label, established in 2003, which issued such bands as Nest, Kayno Yesno Slonce and October Falls.

Voyvoda – The Confederacy comes in a stylish black digipack with photographs instead of booklet. On the other side of each photo a story about people present on the photo is told. It is a pity I don’t understand Bulgarian, but as far as sources the record refers to Bulgaria of the beginning of the XXth century, when a group of rebellions headed by their commanders (these are called “Voyvoda”) were trying to bring the freedom. So this album is a set, a collection of tales, ballads about honor and dedication, betrayal, grief, hope and despair.

It is again that case when blinded by stereotypes (or traditions?) you look at the cover artwork and get ready to listen to music of one kind and what your ears get is something of completely another kind. After having a look at the cover artwork and seeing the group of militant people I was getting prepared for listening to neofolk/ martial kind of music. In fact it happened to be rhythmic industrial in the vein of IDM (technoid atmosphere, created by broken beats and numerous scratches), futurepop (the darker and colder side of it which came to my mind when I heard spreading cold, mechanical, but nevertheless melodical synth passages), ambient (nothing dark, transparent, rather spacial, aerial tunes) and ... postpunk (see rhythmic section on track 2). All these genres are flavoured with quite a decent amount of Balkanian traditional and national elements: the melodies, percussion and instruments used as well as vocal pieces, both played by the band itself (as it sounds) and taken in the form of samples (quite an unexpected was a retro sample in the track TransBalkanExpress then changed by breakbeat piece which made me think to Remain Silent’s Ether-Asphault, a more light and optimistic variant of it).

There are almost no vocals on the album, just narration samples in a few places and may be the track PapasChair contains some vocals or something close to them. So to say, there are no tracks that are made or ment to be made in a one and only genre. All the elements are mixed between each other, they naturally complete each other and create a peculiar harmony. I’d like to point out that the mood of the record is rather positive, there’s no feeling of pressure, agression, rather a feeling of freedom and probably melancholy. The record is very aerial, transparent and is listened to smoothly, in a burst of inspiration. - heathen harvest

"Confederacy Review"

Indzhe Voyvoda is a figure from Bulgarian folklore. In the early 19 th century he led a gang of villains who opposed the Ottoman supremacy. This historical background story became symbolic for the concept of a Balkan confederacy in which Bulgarians, Serbs, Greeks and Moldavians would be united. There are many folk songs devoted to this figure and in Bulgaria also a village has be named likewise. Now there is also an electro-industrial project that goes by the name, and thematically draws inspiration from history and culture of the Balkan region. The minimal electro and synthpop of Voyvoda also takes elements from darkwave, ambient, folk, 80’s wave styles and vintage pop songs from the 60’s. Surprising percussive elements and an electro rhythm merge well with choir singing in ‘Balkan Whispers’. ‘the Confederacy’ is a minimal synthwave tune with female vocals that to the end contains a folkloristic vocal part. ’10:25’ presents idm and breakbeat influences in a track with an ambient atmosphere and computerised vocals. The influence of the 80’s is clearly present in songs such as these. ‘H.M.P.B’ is a track which tries to connect industrial influences to a darkwave pop song, but it doesn’t achieve in doing that well, actually. It sounds better when the darkwave contains cold 80’s synth spheres like in ‘Papaschair’. In ‘the Garden of Beinsa’ the combination of a traditional string instrument, Oriental flutes and electro rhythms ensure the weird duality that is characteristic to the music of Voyvoda and keep it exciting. Voyvoda is a peculiar minimal electro industrial project which sounds exotic enough to get one interested.

The confederacy(Corvus)
Industrial

- Mic/Gr
