A fluffed engagement and a round-the-world adventure acted as the catalyst for Very Unique Existence’s (V.U.E.) formation in late 2004. Now, just 12 months later, the Byron Bay three-piece can boast an arsenal of trim, taught and terrific tunes that are earning the band high-profile supports and industry interest.

“I was pretty down and out emotionally,” V.U.E. singer and guitarist Rich Latimer says of the aftermath of his relationship break-up. “Then I travelled around the world for about 12 months, came home and reassessed who I was and what I was on the Earth to do".

“I just put an ad in the paper and thought ‘This time I’m going to find a crew that works together’. The first dude who applied was this drummer [Chris Boniface] and we just clicked, wrote four or five songs straight up.”

He’s not exaggerating when he says “straight up”. Indeed, many of V.U.E.’s 40-odd songs, which range from “riff-based rockers” to “poppier strum-alongs”, have been written in less time than it takes to make a morning coffee.

“My back catalogue, previous to this, totals about 30 songs over a lot of years. They were complicated songs with time changes and three or four sections. I came home from overseas and thought ‘Life is about right now, this very second. Clear all the bullshit and it’s ABC, 123’. I took that philosophy to writing with V.U.E. and we’ve done that for this first year. Also, it’s about not being self-critical for once."

“Sure, some songs are better than others, but every song is close to our hearts. I’ve stopped getting to the end of the song and going ‘I should put a bridge there’ or ‘I should write another section for this part’. You know, just forget all that and keep it simple. Find something in your heart you can identify with and play. We wrote most of the songs in between three and seven minutes.”

Gaining experience by playing two-to-three-hour sets between Coffs and Brisbane and around Byron Bay and supporting the likes of Wolfmother and Betchadupa, Kevin Borich, The Dirty Skanks, The Keys, Vegas Kings, Gazoomba Attack, Rich and Famous.

V.U.E. were identified by industry experts as ones to watch in this year’s MusicOz competition.
“We went to Sydney and met with Sony,” Latimer reveals. “They said they were interested in what we were doing but said ‘If you guys are serious, move down to Sydney, build a profile and then get in touch with us after six months’. They were basically saying ‘You’re from the bush. Thanks but no thanks’. We want to see if we can make it from Bryon Bay because this is where we love to be. This is our zone in which we operate best in.”

While they’re yet to release an official product, V.U.E. have spent some time in the studio recently.
“I’m really stoked with seven songs out of the 40,” Latimer reveals. “I’m really ambitious and would like things to happen really quickly, but I think we’ve got to stop stressing and just keep doing our thing.
“In early 2006 we hope to release an eight-track EP and perhaps score some distribution.”

band along the way!

V.U.E. are currently seeking label/management yet the indie route is working just
fine at the moment. Rich Latimer front man/songwriter has spent relentless hours
working on the band over the year at all levels, bookings, song writing, promotions
and dedicated himself to his passion sinking everything he has into the dream of
putting out music that conveys the lessons he has been delivered over the years.

“The songs are straight forward I wanted that, I have lots and lots of other great songs yet I
left them all when I started V.U.E.. I took the approach that I wanted each song to
communicate a singular simple message both musically and lyrically and these initial
songs came out.”

V.U.E.’s music is definitely unique they have a sound all of their own, playing everything
from riff driven rock, sing along pop, to anthem style melody power pop. Influences could be
heard like, Powder Finger, Jet, Black Keys, Jeff Buckley, Led Zep, yet they haven’t just
reinvented this, I asked Rich about the song writing process and where it’s heading in 2006
for V.U.E..

“Basically I have been in a very creative zone since returning home from a large journey
over seas, and I knew it was time for my music to come out. Even though I had whole lot
of good songs, I wanted to start again from the base stage and I didn’t judge the
simplicity of a lot of the songs, I just let the emotion show on stage. People don’t even
realise some songs don’t shift off 1 chord. The communication is so clear, I know how people feel with each song, and it feels great to be that connected with people you have never even seen before.”

How did V.U.E. start gigging as soon as you formed? And without songs and not doing, any covers? You guys have played covers only venues and done complete 2-3 hour nights at most venues.

“We started offering money back to play or if the tills dropped or punters left, that’s how we
quickly started gigging in all types of venues and within our first 2 months were being paid
decent rates. We wanted to gig and so when I rang venues they would say okay you have
a gig you need to play from 9pm-12am or 1am and we released if we wanted to be all
original we needed to provided good music but 3 hours of it! So, we started writing. A lot.”

That they did and in time have 3 hours solid worth of tunes, they recently played The Great Northern and recorded a Live DVD and performed for 2.5 hours straight without a single break, then on the following Saturday traveled to Brisbane to record at Sunshine Studios. I also asked Rich how he felt about the songs and the material so far.

“We are constantly writing stronger and stronger songs, it’s a hard thing to define I know we have material that could be hugely popular though it would need the right production, yet that’s not our focus, we want to let the progression of the band at a live level and personal level dictate the song writing and it has been. If you look over the songs chronologically, from when they were written, they start very simple and now we are
writing more whole pieces. It’s like we said okay lets write a song that has only 2 changes and 2 chords yet holds peoples attention, then we moved on and said right lets ad a little to that. I feel like we are heading in a new direction now and the songs will reflect that. I am very excited about this because we have written songs that truly communicate in every essence of the song what it is we feel. Now we can start to mix it up a bit and deliver more in our song writing in 2006. You have to crawl before you walk kinda thing”.

Well if V.U.E.’s current repertoire is their version of crawling, I look forward to seeing what they will be producing when they start running.

V.U.E. have developed a reputation/profile on the east coast based on their live
performance and have done the best they can to raise that profile using local media and
street press.

They receive regular play of their demo ep on Bay FM and FBI (Syd) along side other community radio stations around the country and have had repeated presence in local
paper and the large music Press Rave Mag and Time Off.

These boys definitely have put in
the work this year and given everything they have, they do the same on stage with a performance that projects pure passion and energy in songs that are strong and contagious I look forward to watching the progression of this band over the coming year and to listening to the material as it develops.

TO BE a successful band you’ve got to have a vision. You have to believe in where you’re going, why you’re going there, and most importantly, who you are going with. For Rich Latimer from the Vue, the last year has been about crystalising plans and cutting a path. Latimer has been looking back to 80’s trailblazers like INXS for inspiration. ‘I’ve been reading the INXS biography, trying to work out how to be the biggest band in the world, and their ideology on touring is what I really clicked with – in their fi rst year they just hammered the circuit relentlessly – we tried to do it locally and we were exhausted but it worked, kinda, this year being our second year we are doing the same thing interstate and will be touring Sydney Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth and the third year we go international.’

For the V.U.E., the commitment is very much to audience enjoyment, something that Rich sees as an 80’s music value, shying away from the fl oor-staring grunge of the nineties. ‘Let’s all just have a good time as much as we can... We want to get out there live and make people have a good time – that’s why we do 3 hour live shows of all originals.’

Rich credits fate as playing a big role in the band’s development. ‘When we lost our fi rst bass player (I panicked, did he die or did he actually get lost Spinal Tap style after a gig?? Turns out he just left) we advertised in the paper and we found a young fella Mick Harris, and he’s coming to rehearsal and then he asks the drummer, what’s your surname and he said is it Boniface? And he said yes, and it turns out that they are blood related, cousins or whatever. Then the producer that is working with us now, by chance, he met us at the Great Northern, he met us through Cheyne Murphy at Music Oz, his name is Karl Hemmings he went home to decide whether he was going to work with us and he pulled a tarot card and he was listening to 30 songs on a demo tape, he was like, are you guys for real? He pulled ‘intensity’ from the Osho cards... it comes into play later in the story, he then rings me one day to arrange a rehearsal and we get chatting about life in general. He mentions he has recently moved here from Sydney and is looking for somewhere to stay and 5 minutes before that my flatmate had told me she was leaving and so I said I have a room in my house which was perfect because he was going to be working on the album. Everyone around us decided we should do an EP fi rst. I reluctantly agreed, because I wanted to do a double album debut ... Karl comes upstairs and puts the list down, and says, this is what me and the people I have consulted think are the strongest songs. Then he almost screams and picks up a card from the table, and he said what’s that doing there? I said, that’s one of my girlfriend’s Osho cards and she left it here. And he told me he’d pulled that card 3 weeks before, ‘intensity’ in relation to working with us...

That’s definately a very intense story. Rich admits that the band works very intuitively. ‘When I told this guy that we wrote these songs in the same amount of time it takes to play them, he said: You haven’t done any work shopping? And we said nup, we just put em down. So he’s doing what a producer does I suppose and it’s really cool – he’s like a soldier, he’ll get up at 3 am, have a carrot juice and then work on our songs for 7 hours. He goes through it all line by line with additions – it’s kind of cool, we always knew that there was going to be huge radio potential, but now you can just hear it. I realise we are doing what you might call, Rock Dance, where we have a bit of naive funk kicking in with retro rock and that’s what our thing is, because we learnt if you don’t get people having a good time on the dance floors of the club you just won’t get them back. He (Karl) has taken that mentality and slowly made us understand that people’s home stereos aren’t their dance floors.’

V.U.E. is a grinding rock and funk 3 piece featuring Michael Harris on Bass, a player that Rich credits as ‘Being a freak of a kid. He’s doing a 4 year degree in bass. He can play Beethoven up and down the neck. I call him the Golden Child... and Chris Boniface, he’s like a beast from somewhere... he’s originally from the heavy metal scene, and he’s amazing...’ So far, what has been the greatest rock and roll moment? ‘Basically when your audience is completely connected to you and you know it and they know it and they know that you know it...’

They’re local lads taking rock around the country, Tabatha Fulker discovers…”They get the whole place pumping”

ANY road trip between Lismore and the coast shows evidence of V.U.E.. Posters layered over the backs of street signs; overshadowing the cost of bananas in fruit shops; blinking at you from coffee shop windows. Their marketing might throw their name at your feet, but the question remains — just who are V.U.E.?

The retro rockers are a trio of Lismore lads who are starting to cause a scene in c a p i t a l cities. According to Rich Latimer, they play hard with shows a’jumpin’. “We make sure the whole pub has a great time,” the band’s guitarist and singer said. “We don’t have a label, we haven’t done it with radio airplay, we’re about vibing and people.”

V.U.E. have been together two years, travelling the coast and out west with their drumkit as footrest on the long gigging road. Chris Boniface on drums and Mick Harris on bass make up the trio. For Rich, however, the road to rock and roll glory has been much longer. Growing up ‘out in the mountains, with dope most people’s income’ Rich got a 72 Gold Top guitar at 17 and learnt how to play by fire. “I was going to bikers’ parties and playing guitar,” he said. “If I wasn’t any good I knew they’d rip the bloody Gold Top right off me. This was my step into the music world. It sounds romantic but at the time it was far from it.”

Recently returned from playing shows at the infamous Espy Hotel in St Kilda, Rich is aware his rock big break sits close at hand. “We’re stepping it up,” he said. “Melbourne was so different (to play). People crave live music there. They live for it. “We arrived at the Espy and it was like a shrine — glowing; I think I heard an angel’s tones. “People were lining up the stairs to get in and I’m thinking ‘there must be like a club downstairs, a trance room, DJs, and there’ll be room for a band squeezed in somewhere in a back room if anyone even bothers to come in’. “But no, it was all live music. They filled that room ‘til we couldn’t breathe. It was just so good.”

More shows in Melbourne and Sydney at the Bondi Hotel Easter Saturday Night and the lads have been led back home. Now it’s nose back to the grindstone.

“Our new producer has told us we could be huge with some work,” Rich said. “We created all our songs instantly, but our producer’s taken the elements to pieces and put them back together. “We’ve always written on the spot, with the aim to get crowds pumping and it’s worked. But he’s taught us to realise that what works in a pub doesn’t work pumping out of stereos in people’s homes. A home is not a dancefloor.”

So V.U.E. are busy reworking their material in preparation for recording their debut EP. But in the meantime, you can catch them live and loud at the Hotel Great Northern tomorrow, 9pm. Support by Dakarpo and Angela, tickets at the door $8.

Since testing songs mid 2007 on an early issue of their EP and receiving spot plays on Triple J, MMM Brisbane and regional stations as well as amassing a huge presence on myspace with an intriguing idea of fully involving their audience and feedback in all aspects of the bands career -all leading to the current figure of 99000 plays and counting. The new remastered, repackaged CD now includes a bonus DVD and has already scored the band the Music Network Hit Pic and Emerging Artist piece in the Jan 18th issue.


This has already resulted in no less than 16 ATB Adds(see Feb 4 TMN) across regional commercial radio across NSW and Queensland for the first single 'Take It Easy' with commitment to second single "Pop Song" and third "Looking Down" - stations such as NEW FM, 2ZZZ, Power, Max, Hot 91, 104.7 Grafton and many more have all embraced the bands own self defined brand of 'Positive Consiousness Rock' .The SBA Network have added both the single and video while Mood Media/DMX have taken things one step further with 4 of the five tracks added to their playlists and the single championed as the number one pick from Australia for their European Channels-see www.moodmedia.com.au

The European response is totally in line with the bands strategy of expanding their audience reach using new technologies to get their music everywhere possible and the USA is no exception - the simultaneous radio push going on there as we speak has so far resulted in the band breaking into the TOP 30 College Radio charts in only the second week of promotion with some stations reporting Top 10 plays as well as high level rotation to over 2.5 million internationally on the Moozikoo and Radio X network.

Blending influences from Silverchair to the lighter side of Kyuss, Take it Easy will play well on multi-formats.
