"Vultress! Prog Metal! Fo FREE! But Seriously You Should Pay Though"

Take Mars Volta, 3, The Tea Party, Rush and throw some sweep-happy voluminous lead guitar over the top and you’ve got one quirky, non-djenty prog rock band with some serious metallic edge. There are aggressive, fret-crawling riffs galore and a volume of epic moments to give the whole thing some umph, proving yet again that despite how much you may <3 that new Jason Derullo, the best music is played off the radio, on independent labels and sometimes without a label at all. Rock and metal labels, long catering to bands that sowed most of their seeds out on tour anyway, are now struggling to redefine their role, if ever so slightly. Much like the best things in life, Vultress offers their music FO’ FREE but I made small donation and so should the rest of you commie freeloaders, err, thrifters. One thing is for sure. Kill your radio. Listen to Vultress. Drink more beer. But mostly kill your radio.
Tracks like the “Path” run the gamut of vocal lines, spicy latin flavor and sweep progressions worthy of Yngwie Malmsteen himself. The bands music generally floats between dense, groovy aggression and more celestial parts full of keyboards, guitar arpeggios and a jazzy rhythm section. This would often make my eyes roll to the point of dizzyness but they never forget to bring that catchy hook to keep it fresh. Of course, being a progressive band, you’ll find that Distance includes a plethora frantic moments and Eastern melodies ala Symphony X or Dream Theater. And just when you think they’ve brought the bombast and gotten all serious, they explode into sequences that sound like the score to a Broadway musical. The only downside to this EP is that the opening song is trumped by the three opuses that follow. There’s never a stagnant moment and there is plenty of shredding so naturally your humble reviewer is happy. If that sounds like your goblet of mead than download the album and drop this band a few bones. The piano/lead guitar wailing at the end of “The Siren Screams” alone is worth it. They’ll be on tour in April. They’re not hitting the West coast but we’ll let it slide in light of the name-your-price music. - Maz

"The Review"

Vultress is an up and coming young band from Valparaiso, Indiana featuring vocalist/keybordist, Anthony Capuano, on lead guitar and backing vocals, Jordan Gaboian, bass,Alex (Chucho) Barrios, and Paul Uhrina on drums."Distance",their first EP, shows that Progressive Rock is alive & well in Northwest Indiana, while albeit the production isn't major label quality, the songcraft is very mature, I hear alot of potential in this group.
The first track"Returned To Earth" sets the stage with a sound reminescent of Coheed & Cambria, to the last cut "The Siren Screams" continuing in the same vien with some Rush & Orphaned Land thrown in the mix, In between the two are the songs "The Path" a familiar sounding rocker in a Dream Theater-Fates Warning mold and "Reinvocation" a bossa nova tinged foray recalling the operatic rock of Queen infused with a contemporary prog metal flavouring

The musicianship is very proficient, above average I would say. I especially enjoyed the guitar prowess of Jordan, the dude can shred like a pro. Anthony is no slouch on the keyboards and the rythm section adequately keeps it all together.

I've listened to this cd quite a bit lately and it's hook filled enough to be memorable. I look forward to a full length album soon.Thank you Vultress! - Chris Erbeck

Bio

The name Vultress was first given to various recreational musical projects that Paul Uhrina (drums/percussion) assembled during his high school years. It was during this time that Paul met Jordan Gaboian (guitar), who shared with Paul the desire to make progressive and challenging music. While various band members came in and out of the Vultress picture over the next months, their preference for composing unconventional music remained. Vultress then met Anthony Capuano (vocals), a like-minded musician who had experience playing and composing progressive music. Once they recruited bassist Chucho, their recipe for heavy, melodic progressive music was complete.

Vultress strives to make music that truly stands out on its own while reflecting the personalities of its members. After almost two years of dedicating massive amounts of time and effort, and two successful tours under their belt the band has recently finished writing their first full length album; a concept album entitled "Distance" which the band is in the process of recording

They have self-released their debut EP."Distance: EP," which contains four out of six installments of the Distance saga and is available for purchase and download on the band's website (http://www.vultress.com/home.cfm)
