"Vuneny 'V2' Review"

'V2' is the sophomore full-length from Bosnian trio Vuneny, a band that I wasn't familiar with beforehand, on the great Slovenian label Moonlee Records. This lengthy affair (14 tracks in about an hour) proves to be an incredibly unique and intriguing set of songs that superbly mesh all sorts of electronics and programming with guitars and sparse vocal manipulations to create a vastly experimental and atmospheric tone that really does defy categorization in my opinion. Despite the heavy use of electronics as a central element, there's something about the pieces that feels much more organic than one might expect, and to my ears this doesn't come across as typically 'electronic' at all. I love the ethereal qualities often achieved by the textures and the melodic attributes, especially when the tracks start to lean towards a really hypnotic sensibility that sort of takes hold. Despite the bulkiness of the total running time the album actually passes by quite fluidly, and that’s always a plus. Some of the compositions are remixes or re-workings of tracks that were originally performed live or written for films (the final four tracks on the disc were originally intended to be the soundtrack for a yet-to-be-completed film), which further indicates the artistic rationale of the group. 'V2' also boasts an excellent recording and odd yet appropriate design work, so… another curious release from the always interesting Moonlee roster. Very cool, I’m really diggin' this… - www.aversionline.com

"We rate this: 9 out of 10"

It’s refreshing every now and again to hear something different. Something that reminds you how good music can be, and that there’s still people out there prepared to come up with something that hits you where it matters. This eclectic fusion of electronica and guitars did just that. The bastard son of electro-pop and alternative rock, the mix of guitars and synth had me on the edge of my seat wondering what was coming next. Chilled to the point of being horizontal whilst displaying some of the most creative mixing I’ve heard in years, this is a crossover worth bearing notice of.

Vuneny have worked on a couple of film soundtracks and worked with Nobel Literature Prize Winner, Ivo Andric. Their music captures so much emotion and says so much without relying wholly on the medium of speech that it won’t be long before we’re hearing a lot more about them over here. I’ve even got it pencilled in for future productions I’m doing. Avant Garde and awesome.

Bio

A lot of indie experimental music, a lot of times, sounds similar to itself. We need music that pushes the envelope, and VUNENY are here to fulfil our needs. With their second full length titled V2, VUNENY are here to show us all that they make music that's cutting edge. There have been lots of acts that have come out of Eastern Europe but nothing like VUNENY.

It's been three years, more than 250 shows, several releases, one full length and a second full length on it's way since the band first started up. It was the beginning of 2003 when Andrijan Zovko and Nedim Cisic founded VUNENY. They were asked to make music for a legendary mute movie titled Le Revelateur (Phillipe Garell, 1968) and that seemed like a good reason to start a band. It's not like they haven't been making music before that, on the contrary, members of VUNENY, Andrijan, Nedim and Asmir, Bosnia bred musicians have been strongly involved with the music scene playing in various bands such as Handle With Care, Mara and Alternativa Nova as well as organizing various shows and performances.

It's hard to describe VUNENY's music. Their persona as well as the music they make embody something special. They are like the new movie everyone needs to see, and with their new recording they definitely made an album everyone will want to hear. With their sophomore album they deliver electro fueled world of rock instrumentation. Listening to V2 you can't help but hear how talented this trio is. They are amazing musicians, producers and incredible songwriters.

On V2 Andrijan, Nedim and Asmir used their skills to the fullest, every little aspect is brought down to the perfection and handled very smoothly. Frankly, the uniqueness of VUNENY makes it real hard to compare them to other artists, but listening to their work you can definitely hear rhythmic perfection that bands such as Tool dole out or crazy maneuvers that Squarepusher is known for.
