"VYRUS gets 9 out of 10 stars"

Our Rating: 9 stars
author: Adam Harrington

Real rock & roll is not dead. If you peel away the layers of emo refuse and poseur punk clogging the AOR airwaves, you'll find some genuine ass-kicking ready to burst forth, taking no prisoners and spewing no nonsense. The Los Angeles-based Vyrus (http://www.vyrus.com) is one of these, a power-packing hard rock band that refuses to play the whiny adolescent card.

Taking cues from the revolutionary early '90s days of Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam, Vyrus is a lightning jolt to the wussy remains of alternative music. On this self-titled five-track demo, Vyrus smokes like a house on fire. On the opening track "Lost in the Dark," Bryan Foley's urgent vocals ride on a strong sense of melody that gives the slamming guitars more impact. Brace yourself for some top-drawer headbanging.

It's one thing to bring on the noise; however, Vyrus balances crunch with tight hooks and solid musicianship. The epic sweep of "XPAND" echoes the widescreen metal of Alice in Chains and the sonic dynamics of Faith No More. Crank it up and experience rock with a capital R. Even more adventurous is "Guttermind" with its intriguing Middle Eastern intro.

How refreshing it is to hear genuine rock & roll again.

"Orange Pop: Vyrus hopes its sound is contagious"

By ROBERT KINSLER
Special to the Register

With Halloween coming up, those looking for musical tricks or treats might want to be on the lookout for Vyrus.

The Dana Point-based trio is releasing its self-titled debut Tuesday and celebrating the release of "Vyrus" with a high-profile show opening for L.A. Guns at the Knitting Factory in Los Angeles. Singer-guitarist Bryan Foley, drummer Donny Hinegardner and bassist Keith Rutherfurd are championing a style of hard rock that will appeal to fans of Rush, Soundgarden, Queens of the Stone Age and Tool.

"What you hear on there is very pure," Foley said of their CD.

The 13-song disc was recorded at Love Juice Laboratories in La Habra. Released on Foley's Braintrust Records ( www.BrainTrustRecords.com), "Vyrus" represents a mix of material from the group's early history ("Year of the Dog" was written in 1994), as well as the newly penned "Free Your Soul" and "Lost in the Dark."

Other highlights on the disc include the hard-rocking "Xpand" and "Unsettled," as well as the melodic rock heard on "Further" and "Unforeseen."

"We are (originally) from Washington, D.C. We grew up on heavy metal and D.C. hardcore punk (Bad Brains, Minor Threat)," said Foley, a resident of Orange County since 2001. "It's not necessarily in our sound, but it's in our blood."

Foley and Hinegardner formed the band while living in the nation's capital in the mid-1990s. Both moved to Los Angeles in 1999 and may well have made history by playing their first Hollywood-area shows at both the Whisky a Go-Go and the Roxy on the same night. "We got double-booked," Hinegardner said. The band performed at a number of Los Angeles clubs, while focusing on songwriting and recording demos over the next several years. It wasn't until the end of 2005 that Foley and Hinegardner felt confident enough to record and release a full-length disc of original material.

"We have recorded other songs, but didn't (commercially) release anything," Hinegardner said. On Nov. 15, 2005, Foley and Hinegardner went into the studio and began tracking for "Vyrus." It was around the time they started tracking that they met Rutherfurd, who quickly became an important part of the band's sound.

Rutherfurd was especially pleased when he was rescued from playing in a cover band and was asked to help spread Vyrus' musical reach.

"They let me go where I want to take it," Rutherfurd said of his bandmates' encouragement to play distinctive and original bass parts. "That is as much artistry as you can get."

Foley said his lyrics, as much as the sound of the songs, are open for interpretation by each listener. "I write from the subconscious," he said, adding that his songs generally tackle themes such as staying true to one's self and taking a stand.

"When you find the people you are supposed to play music with, there is so much energy between you," Hinegardner said of the chemistry he enjoys with Foley and Rutherfurd. "When people hear the CD, they'll know that."

Vyrus' performs at 10 p.m. Tuesday at Knitting Factory, 7021 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles.

"INK19"

For Vyrus, the '90s never ended, especially the first exciting years of the decade, when bands like Soundgarden and Stone Temple Pilots tossed spandex to the wind and unleashed a monster musical movement with two-fisted riffs, guitar distortion and an ominous worldview. To those who spent high school listening to alternative radio at the time, they were years to look fondly upon.

Although I am reluctant to label Vyrus as a retro group (was it that long ago?), the spirit of that era burns within them. They are not some imbecilic Blink-182 wannabe, nor do they worship the throne of Nickelback. Vyrus is pure rock & roll, blasting off with enough nuclear warhead fumes to choke a cafeteria filled with emo kids. If you're sick of James Blunt's grating sappiness or Fall Out Boy's annoying preteen shrieks, Vyrus will heal those exhausted ears.

While there are only five cuts on this demo, nobody will leave unsatisfied. Vyrus throws on enough rock per minute to make it a king's feast. "Lost in the Dark" shows that Vyrus means business without a second's hesitation; it packs a tremendous wallop. "Further" is punchy straightforward rock, and the nicely named "Guttermind" displays both artistry and a hearty appetite for sonic booms.

Bio

Formed in Washington, D.C., the musical entity known as VYRUS was officially born at the Spiral Club in Greenwich Village, NYC on the first day of Spring in 1999. A standard 4-man rock line up at the time, the band head west to Los Angeles just a few months later. That's where VYRUS founders, singer/songwriter/guitarist Bryan Foley and Drummer Donny Hinegardner made history with their debut at the famous Whiskey A-GO-GO and Roxy both the same night. Little did the unit know the musical ride they were about to experience.

After performing at every major club in the L.A. music scene over the next 4 years, Foley headed up indie label Braintrust Records while Donny Drums perfected various futuristic sonic techniques on drums. All the while, they continued writing and recording new material for their debut release.

A heavy rock/experimental sonic hybrid, VYRUS fuses classic songwriting with futuristic soundscapes and inescapable hooks! They have garnered national attention on the 2003 Lollapalooza Tour summer sampler, a slot on the "Vengeance" film soundtrack, and national FM radio airplay in 25 cities.

The VYRUS self-titled debut LP was released Halloween night 2006 by Braintrust Records and is now available at CDBaby.com and Apple iTunes. DIO lead guitarist Craig Goldy assisted on 3 tracks while PORNO FOR PYROS guitarist Peter DiStefano has been added as an executive producer. VYRUS has also offered a song, "Forever 21", to the non-profit www.21forever.org in tribute to slain Washington Redskins All-Pro Free Safety Sean Taylor.
