Wakaman

BandWorldReggae

Authentic Roots Reggae from Suriname. Uplifting lyrics, infectious melodies, and soaring horn lines, all layered on top of deep drum & bass. This is classic island style reggae!

Biography

Wakaman means "wanderder" or "immigrant" in Taki Taki, one of the many the languages you will find in the country of Suriname. Wakaman's singer, Alfons Petrusi, grew up in the interior jungle of Suriname listening to the reggae sounds from across the Carribean sea. At a young age music became his vehicle to tell the story of his people and to escape from the struggles of poverty.

Alfons immigrated to Portland, OR in 2003 and was fortunate enough to have met Bob Dunham ( guitarist ) in Suriname the prior year. Bob eventually connected him with Benjamin Scarola, with whom he produced and recorded his first full length CD.

More Peace

Written By: Alfons Petrusi

I want more peace in the world
I'm telling you
Oh lord, please help us
Put more love inside us
So we can see
the light, of Jah almighty
The one, that shines so bright
Is teaching us
How we, must live our lives

I want to know how you feel
you want to tell me how your feeling
South America
North America
Africa
Australia

( chorus )

I want to know how you feel
you want to tell me how your feeling
Antarctica
Eurasia
South America
North America

( chorus )

Why can't we, come together
and make peace in the world
Hear me what I say

Why can't we, come together
and stop genocide

Why can't we, come together
and stop poverty

Thief Man

Written By: Alfons Petrusi

Hear me now, brothers and sisters believe me
the land is ours it belongs to us
He smile with us
but he hate us
oooh oooh, Mr. Thiefman
You continue to steal our property
oooh, oooh, you bring us poverty

You continue to steal our property
oooh, oooh, you bring us poverty

I know, I know
Yes know, we have to congregate
Jehola, yes now, we have to congregate
Jehola, rule creation
and I know that Jehola with me
I know about his nasty life
you know that we are starving,
of course you do
oooh, oooh, Mr. Thiefman
you also know it is a human right
of course you do
I know, I know, I know
you know it is a human right
of course you do
oooh, oooh, it is a human right

I know, I know
I know, I know you have no power
Yes now hey Mr. Thiefman you've got to stop it
This peace land belongs to us
I warned you to leave me, our nation
And I know that Jeholah with me
And he will give us sovereignty
We will not give up this piece of land
Oooh Mr. Thiefman
I know, I know, you have no power
Yes now hey Mr. Thiefman you've got to stop it
This peace land belongs to us
I warned you to leave me, our nation
And I know that Jeholah with me
And he will give us sovereignty
We will not give up this piece of land
Oooh Mr. Thiefman
I know, I know, you have no power

What I See

Written By: Alfons Petrusi

What I See

If you ask me what I see
I see unhappiness
Do you know what cause this?
Don't you say lonliness
Don't you say oppression
Don't you say hatred
Don't you say war
It's the false belief in mind
Because the unhappiness
That is why you're confused

Every time I look around
To see if I can find,
A single happy person
Who's free from insecurities

I was lucky to find one out of a hundred
Who dropped his false belief in free form anxiety
Hey, hey, hey let me tell you

They are the more big ones
True na dem, True na dem
They are the hope true na dem
True na dem, True na dem

Jehova witness, ooooh
All the wicked ones
After all the people want to make me stop
To share my sweet love
Because some of them living in this life like they gamble
Ask them why they don't mean to
Come join me in praising Jah Almighty name
we all will be happy and feeling fine
Hey, join me join me join me
Hey, Hey, let me tell you
