The stark contrast between the glam of overpriced stage shows on national/international award shows and the raw hard work of the passionate proverbial “underground” never ceases to inspire. But finding the right argument for and against the contrast can be a challenging endeavor.

On one hand we have the Tom Bradys of music. You know, the pretty music married to even prettier model spouses, but find a way to bitch about how unfair life is, yet seem to have everything fall their way. On the other hand we have the grinding, dirty, hardworking rock that is so filled with passion and emotion they let their sound do all the talking; for the sake of understanding we’ll refer to this as the “Marshawn Lynch” music.

And it is exactly that passion and emotion, the weaving of fuzzy, gutter rock with a seemingly uncaring, but obviously massive, lyrical power that drives the fourth release of Los Angeles’ Wake Up Lucid. The Beast-Mode of a sound approaches you without reservation or pretense, beats the hell out of you with an intense energy, and then leaves you feeling like you need a shower; but deep down inside you know you liked it.

The first four songs from Gone With The Night, “White Collar Love” through “I Want,” exudes an underground vibe filled with leather jackets, spiked hair, questionable piercings and total disregard for self-preservation in a way that invigorates even the most conservative. The dank, dark venue in your mind is quickly found by the trio that explains their latest work with “Give us something real, something we can feel. Or get fucked.”

And this explanation hones in on, and obliterates, any preconception with what follows the first four tracks. Coming in at over nine minutes, “Get Fucked” takes a size thirteen boot, that wears scuffs and time with pride, and curb-stomps the Brady sounds of the world. The sexy, jam-style, hard-pressing sound of this single song elevates Gone With The Night to an entirely different level. If someone told me they were just releasing this song, without the rest of the album, I can’t say I would put up any fight. The pure strength of it leaves some damn great songs around it in a shadow that simply cannot be matched.

In a time where the pretty are getting everything, sans intelligence, and the ones with fight are continuously being pushed into the shadows I must say I wasn’t expecting the shadows to come to life like Wake Up Lucid did here. The combination of power-rock, laid out with precision, topped with lyrics that instantly suck you in, drenched in a dimly lit hole you pass by daily but never stop to admire, makes me think if Nirvana were still around we’d end up somewhere in the neighborhood of Wake Up Lucid and this unforgettable sound. There’s visceral and then there’s Wake Up Lucid. The L.A.-based trio of cousins — Ryan, Ian and Jamie Baca — have been making not-so-nice for about five years now, with two EPs and the 2012 full-length “Feel It” outlining their agenda to make heavy blues so dangerous it should be on a do-not-fly list. Live, they play with the lights down low but everything else turned up, leaving bleeding ears to sort out the beauty in their muck and mire. And there is beauty, especially on Wake Up Lucid’s forthcoming EP “Gone With the Night.” More than their previous work, their 30 minutes (!) of new music reveals a broader dynamic, crystallized on the writerly, acoustic-electric title track. The galloping “White Collar Love” is a concise, blue-collar single; the previously teased “I Want” tests high for toxicity; and then there is “Get F*cked,” a 9-minute stew that simmers and then boils over in apoplexy. No surprise that Wake Up Lucid does their studio work with another purveyor of uncompromising heavy music, Joe Cardamone of the Icarus Line. Clearly, Los Angeles three-piece Wake up Lucid are not playing it subtle on “Get Fucked.” The song is a nine-minute languid roll of a groove, somewhere between Dead Meadow-style shoegaze drawl and rawer, underfed Stooges-style snarling heavy rock, taken from their soon-to-be-released second full-length, Gone with the Night. Effects add an otherworldly choppiness to the guitars on what becomes an extended jam, the lineup of Ryan Baca, Ian Baca and Jamie Baca — all cousins — devolving what seems at first like a relatively straightforward structure into a smoldering pile of noise-wash goo topped with unhinged shouts.

And the best part of the whole thing? That’s when the bassline kicks back in and they easy-ride that groove into wake up lucid gone with the nightthe fadeout ending a progression that sounds more or less like it could just keep going into perpetuity, the final lyric, “Look what I started,” vigilantly ominous over the hazy atmosphere that emerges. It’s a long way from where “Get Fucked” started, its invitation handed out liberally in between, and while I haven’t heard the rest of Gone with the Night, both the initial bounce of the track and the fluidity with which it shifts into off-kilter heavy psych weirdness — synth and swirl never quite gone, but swelling to the fore later on — speak of a vicious approach at work.

The Skinny: LA garage rock trio Wake Up Lucid have a new 7" coming out in two weeks on Near Mess Records and recently they unveiled the lead single, called "I Want". Los Angeles-based rock trio Wake Up Lucid are set to release their full-length debut album, Feel It, on Aug. 7. Ahead of the album's release, GRAMMY.com has your exclusive first listen to the song "When I Come Around."

"On the Internet people can see any number of styles they want to mimic, and it becomes a matter of saying, 'Oh, I wanna be like that,'" says vocalist/guitarist Ryan Baca. "We simply had to focus on making a record that we'd want to hear."

Featuring cousins Ryan, Ian (bass) and Jamie Baca (drums), Wake Up Lucid's sound combines huge guitar riffs and thunderous drums with a garage band aesthetic. The trio released a debut EP, Look Alive People, in 2009, and followed in 2011 with a second EP, Sugar.

The latter EP caught the attention of producer Joe Cardamone, who is also the frontman of L.A.-based band the Icarus Line. The trio musically connected with Cardamone, sharing a love for artists such as UFO and Alice Cooper, and his creative input proved to be integral to the Feel It recording sessions.

"Joe let us evolve on our own, and by the time we got into the studio he was just like, 'Play it like you practice it,'" Jamie says. "He helped us streamline, cut down the unnecessary parts."

The album's 11 tracks include the riff-heavy title track; "Drunk On Information," which tackles sensory and sonic overload; the defiant "Rising Tide"; and the epic album closer "Black Haired Woman," which contains more than six minutes of sonic mayhem.

Los Angeles-based band Wake Up Lucid seriously one-upped themselves this time around on the title track to their new full-length, ‘Feel It.’

The three cousins, Ryan, Ian and Jamie — assisted by producer Cardamone (the Icarus Line) — have successfully channeled the aura of Sleep and blended it with the kind of Thin Lizzy-worship that would please even the staunchest of classic rock fans.

Ryan Baca, leader of the pack, told Diffuser.fm about the raw production techniques used in the making of the single: “The track ‘Feel It’ came together by us turning everything in the studio up to 10.”

“The room was full of feedback and and we ran through the song,” he continued. “Once we hit the last note you could tell that the energy had changed and we had really just created something.”

“We tried to mix the song with that same idea in mind and basically made everything in the mix feel like its fighting with everything else to be heard,” Baca said.

1. How would you describe your music?

You know in the end of Raider's of the Lost Ark when the opening of the Ark of the Covenant melts the Nazi's faces? I'm just sayin...

But really, an honest and LOUD road-map back to the gritty rock roots that everyone has known at some juncture in their lives.

Then creatively trying to bridge that gap to the modern musical landscape.

2) What’s your pre-show ritual?

A couple tall cans, a few pushups, ab crunches and a whiskey chaser.

3) What’s your live show like?

Pure chemistry and energy! Thick rhythms to make you want to shake your ass to and guitars to melt your face.

4) What’s been your best music-related experience to date?

This is our third record recorded at the legendary Village Recorder. Every time we walk into the studio and start tracking is a magical experience.


5) What’s your dream gig?

Playing on a Red Bull Soundstage stage of course, with Neil Young riding shot-gun and Biz Markie giving us the pre-show pep talk.

6) What’s next for you?

Getting this album "Feel It" out and getting it heard is our priority. But those new little riffs, licks, jams of new songs, and phrases like "Oh, on the next record we should..." are already creeping into the band's lexicon.

Los Angeles trio of cousins, Wake Up Lucid debut their first LP Feel It on August 7th. The album provides that scuzzy, bluesy rock that almost sounds like it belongs more in the Woodstock era than in today’s mashed up mess of musical mishaps. Their sound is a great revitalization of the classic riffs, heavy jams, and scratchy vocals that defined an era. As they say, history repeats itself, and it’s been far too long since this genre was reawakened.

First track and single “Feel It” beckons Jimi Hendrix’s foxiness in an all-out jam session. “You want to take it slow/I want to take you home” cries lead singer Ryan Baca over amped up guitar grooves and basement drum beats, a sound that can only be created by actually playing instruments.

However, while Wake Up Lucid seems to teleport back to the late 60s for inspiration, they also mix this vintage sound with a more modern vibe. Channeling another great rock legend, “Arms” and “Rising Tide” are The White Stripes but bassier. The simplicity of the guitar, bass, drums set up conveys a minimalist approach without skimping on the full sound.

The mastery of this three piece arrangement that is heard in “When I Come Around” reminds me of another stoner rock trio, Band of Skulls. Baca is in his own mind as he wrestles with choosing sides over stop-start funk. “Fame” has a bridge that focuses on the contributions of each instrument until building back up in layers.

“Drunk on Information” sounds like the band is based in Nashville, not LA, while “Facepaint” is edgy enough for a Brooklyn basement.

Scruffy, grungy blues at its finest, you really can’t ignore the hook in “Just Can’t Ignore.” This track is almost like something your parents listened to in their wild days, driving around going to shows in a beefed up, rusty pickup, or if you can’t imagine your parents like that, something that Hyde from That 70s Show would be jamming out to at the record store.

“Death Valley” puts the blues in blues rock and by this point in the album, you want to break out your tinted 60s glasses and tie-dye under your studded brown leather jacket.

Taking you back to high school, slight ballad “Where Are We Now” slows things down a bit, but maintains the intensity of the instrumentals.

Breaking into the voodoo, “Black Hair Woman” is festival ready with a fake-out intro and almost 2 and a half minutes of enthralling instrumental before cutting into raunchy vocals. This is one to mindlessly sway and dance to as you get lost in the fingerpicking and gritty riffs.

Overall, Wake Up Lucid’s sound is a collection of classic groove mixed with modern influence in order to reawaken the spirits of Woodstock and good old Southern rock and blues. I’m curious to see what their live set entails, and maybe even more curious to see what type of crowd they bring. But, nevertheless, if you want edgy, emotional rock and hints of the foggy festival past, break out your bellbottoms baby, and listen to this album.

The Los Angeles-based three-piece band of cousins Wake Up Lucid could be considered the lo-fi garage rock relatives of the Black Keys. The band release their breakout EP, Sugar, in 2011. And they're now set to release their first full-length LP, Feel It, on August 7.

The gritty blues rock band fittingly named this album Feel It; clearly, all this band does is feel. And that is exactly what the audience will do when listening to this album. It's go-with-your gut music, as the band followed their instincts when writing, recording and performing.

Q: Introduce your sound in five words or less…

A: Loud, Raw, Honest.

Q: Which places or people inspired the songs in your music?

A: I feel like Los Angeles gives us some inspiration, but really the songs come more from the inside than the outside.

Q: What is the most fun you’ve ever had writing a song? Either actually writing it or the situation that inspired it?

A: That would probably be Facepaint. We were in the studio tracking this record and decided to try and write something while we were in there. We started messing around with the melody and the song just started falling into place. Within an hour we had it ready, tracked it live and that’s the take on the record.

Q: Who encouraged you the most to pursue a career in music?

A: We come from a really musical family so playing music was always encouraged, but almost felt more like it was just expected.

Q: Describe the moment you decided to quit your day job to pursue music as a career. Where (city at least) and when (year at least) were you?

A: Ha! We still have day jobs, I’m filling this out at work right now.

Q: What are the positives and negatives of being in a band with family members?

A: Same answer for both… There’s no quitting the band.

Q: What advice could you give a young musician wanting to form a band?

A: Do it, it’s a good time.

Q: What impact has touring had on your career?

A: Getting to play night after night and get comfortable in that setting is the best part about touring.

Q: Which do you enjoy most - performing live or recording in the studio?

A: Both are my favorite things to do. Playing live is great because you get out and connect with people you don’t know and you’re all on the same level for an hour or so. Recording is cool because being in the studio feels like you’re in some cave where no one can see or hear you and you’re just trying to create something to give to people that you hope will be of some value to them.

Q: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

A: Be good, and if you can’t be good then be good at it.

Q: Which historic musical moment do you wish you were present for?

A: Maybe Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring”, it would be cool to see classical music cause a riot.

Q: What artist would you most like to work with, dead or alive? And why?

A: I don’t really think about wanting to work with artists that I look up to because they already got their whole thing dialed and working, I’d rather just have a good conversation about music with them. The short list would probably be: Neil Young, Townes VanZandt, David Bowie, BB King, Ray Charles, Keith Richards, Isaac Brock…

Wake Up Lucid is a LA based three piece band of cousins that combines sex-drenched vocals, high octane guitar, and a glorious lo-fi sludge that is garage rock at its purest and most dangerous. More grime than the Black Keys and far more savage than The White Stripes, their 2011 Sugar EP was described by Rolling Stone as “raunchy rock at it’s best”.

Remember what it was like before the iPod? The grainy touch of static in the radio speakers while the rock blared through the car's open window or off the front porch steps? That sound came back in a big way with Wake Up Lucid. The band has long been the face of raunchy music and their new album, Feel It, is pleasantly rough with the grungy infusions of nineties radio rock.

Not my cup of tea usually; when I hear most modern grunge or garage rock I think “noise”. Though those thoughts are not far from my mind regarding some tracks, Feel It has the advantage of a good balance between wildness and structure. It's purposefully rough around the edges, but solid and complex on the inside.

Wake Up Lucid has been compared to The White Stripes and though the album is more abrupt and spasmodic than the more mainstream band, fans are sure to enjoy the similarities between the two in the intricate, guitar riffs and song themes.

Like much of the work done by Wake Up Lucid, their songs have the rough adolescent quality of garage music and the contrasting sinewy, psychedelic twist of seventies rock. Both are strongly apparent in tracks “Drunk On Information” and the single by the same name as the album, “Feel It”.

After the release of Sugar, their second, 2011 EP, Wake Up Lucid was praised by Rolling Stone Magazine for playing “raunchy rock at it's best”. The three-piece band made up of cousins Ryan, Ian and Jamie Baca, have now brewed up what might be described as adding more cayenne to the chilli. Where Sugar was, at times more mellow and sexy, Feel It fills in with disturbing reverberations, almost hypnotic, screeching melodies and lamenting lyrics. This band has the dual quality in its roughly textured, abstract music. Like a debuting piece of art, some audiences may claw at their ears, longing for blander tunes, while others will see endless possibilities and intricacies when Feel It is released August 7, 2012.

This album is malevolent and dark without being heavy or fake. There are many bands that can imitate the sound of dark empty roads driven on by a lone speeding car, or a strippers stilettos twirling towards her seedy voyeurs. But imitation is not what Feel It is about. With its apt title, this album has warm, dark grime permanently imbedded under its fingernails.

Los Angeles trio Wake Up Lucid stirs its special blend of rambunctious garage rock and gritty blues fusion in their latest EP, Sugar. After devouring the five tracks at a measly 16 minute run time, it left me hungry and craving more. Though, I must say, it was delicious until the last bite.

Safe similarities for Wake Up Lucid, that has probably been made countless times, would be Cage the Elephant but more notably The White Stripes. The vintage sound as lead vocalist and guitarist Ryan Baca rhythmically barking out lyrics with a slew of scatterbrained guitar solos; it’s a fair comparison.

Cousins Ian Baca (Bass) and Jamie Baca (Drums) make it a family affair to capitalize on the recently resurgent formula. Ian supplies fragmenting yet groovy bass lines while Jamie franticly beats his kit to oblivion. It was hard to choose only one as the standout track but after some deliberation, I choose “Paint Your Lips”. It was the track where all three members flamboyantly flaunted their confidence as musicians as a unit. Drenching in the dirty bourbon and thick cigarette smoke verses laid a swagger that was infectious to the ear.

The EP Sugar passes entirely too quick and only gets more appreciated on multiple listens. Wake Up Lucid has all the potential in the world. When they ultimately embark on a full feature album, I see no reason why they couldn’t just ride this momentum. Sugar sports plenty of guitar bite, savage drumming, aged vocals and groovy bass-lines. Like a Whiskey-fueled night on the town, Wake Up Lucid feels as good as it sounds.

As on their debut EP, the California trio Wake Up Lucid delves into bluesy classic rock on the Sugar EP. It’s music that conjures up psychedelics even while punching holes in walls. Like other bands that have reveled in this area, 22-20s, the Blue Van, Parlor Mob, and Invade Rome, Sugar smashes through five tracks of propulsive drums, muscle guitar solos, and blues-drenched rock vocals. More than breaking new territory with this EP, Wake Up Lucid seems to have filled out the picture we first started to get with the previous release, Look Alive People. Mainly playing residencies in Los Angeles, here’s hoping that the band is able to start touring nationally, swaggering through clubs on music that waggles tremendous power, melodies, and classicism.

It’s a family affair, y’all. The cousins Barca (Ryan Barca, Ian Barca, Jamie Barca) are Wake Up Lucid, aka the music you’ve been waiting for. Reppin’ Los Angeles (HOLLER!) these guys have been making a splash in California and deserve some more national cred. I’ve been hearing about them for some time now, so when I saw the email in the subs box I had to jump on it.

It’s time to get back to the roots of rock and roll, the simple lo-fi sound of garage chords and a hunk on the mic singing about girls that fucked him up. They’ve been busy, working on a full length EP but still have been out promoting their recent EP, “Sugar”.

This is the shit that redeems all the trash on the radio right now; it’s got a raw appeal to it that’s reminiscent of the Black Keys, fusing together a blusey sound with heavy riffs. There’s definitely passion in this music, they’ve got an air about them that just gushes with heart.

Two parts rock, one parts noise, three parts rad dudes, and a lot of rockandfuckinroll. These guys are going to be a part of a residency at a venue by my house, The Silverlake Lounge, on Mondays in April- if you know this place, it’s so appropriate. The best place to listen to this music to; small as shit, sticky floors, dark lights, and booze.

These guys got a nod from Rolling Stone (ever heard of it?), they’re not messing around here. Think if Jet had a baby with Wolfmother (so good, right?). Their recent release, “Sugar” is fantastic… I’ve put a few tracks below so you can get a little taste of it but I think one of my favorite tracks is “Black Hair Woman”. Fuck it, they’re all good. "Paint Your Lips" is the new single from local trio Wake Up Lucid off their recent EP, Sugar. When singer/guitarist Ryan Baca had a dream in which he and his late father composed a song entitled “Wake Up Lucid,” he wasted no time in putting together a band under that very name. Enlisting the help of cousins Ian (bass) and Jamie Baca (drums), Wake Up Lucid was born and quickly released its debut EP, Look Alive People, to rave reviews from Rolling Stone. Randy recently had the chance to chat with Ryan about all things Wake Up Lucid…

Q: How has your music evolved since you first began playing together?

A: Well, we’re still a really young band, Jamie had only been with us three months when we recorded Look Alive People. Since recording that EP, we are just trying to keep that energy and excitement that you have when you first get a band together and also focusing on songs that have a timeless feel, rather than whatever is hot at the moment.

Q: How has your father’s passing influenced your music as a group?

A: That occurred about ten years before we started the band, so whatever influence that has on us is just part of who we are now.

Q: What inspires you as a group to write the music you write?

A: There really isn’t anything specific. Each song just kind of writes itself. We never sit down and say “Let’s write this style of a song, or a song about this or that.” Inspiration just kinda comes out of nowhere and when you recognize it, you just drop everything else that you’re doing ’till the song is done.

Q: What has been your biggest challenge as a band?

A: Our biggest challenge right now is probably just getting together to play. We are all spread out at the moment, so getting into the studio to practice takes a little effort.

Q: What’s the ultimate direction Wake Up Lucid is headed for?

A: We just want to develop and become better, both individually and as a group. We love playing music and we love playing live, so however we can do that more is where we’re headed.

Q: The band is becoming more and more recognized in the industry, what are your plans to deal with the level of fame you’re all headed towards?

A: We take everything day-to-day; just being in this band is enough. We’re gonna keep working hard and hopefully we end up where we deserve.

Q: What are your favorite and least favorite venues to play?

A: Well, we’re an L.A. band, so we love playing Spaceland, Silverlake Lounge, Bootleg Theatre, Bordello etc. The Highball in Austin was one of the best venues we’ve been to. It’s a vintage style bowling alley on one side and then a venue on the other. The Divided Sky in South Lake Tahoe is an amazing place to play. It’s a smaller spot, but people will pile in until they are standing on tables and hanging out the windows.

Can’t say we have a least favorite venue. We play with the same energy whether the room is sold out or empty.

Q: Do you have any advice for people who strive to form their own bands?

A: Do it! We could all use more music.

Q: Any last words gentlemen?

A: Just want to thank you guys for doing this feature and all our friends and family for the support. Jeff Greenburg, Tina Morris and Ghian Wright at The Village Recorder for taking a chance on us and letting us record there.

A few weeks ago, we acted on tips from our loyal SS readers to check out the LA-based trio Wake Up Lucid. We were impressed, tracked 'em down and talked to frontman Ryan Baca about their music and their rapid rise since hitting the SoCal circuit just a few months ago.

Wake Up Lucid’s no-frills blues feels like a breath of fresh air amid all today’s tricked-out psychedelia and hybridized noise. The project of cousins Ryan, Ian and Jamie Baca, the trio’s debut EP “Look Alive People,” recorded to 2-inch tape at the Village in West L.A. a year ago, crackles with bite-sized riffs and taut rhythms. Occasionally you’ll get a whiff of the Dead Weather or Wolfmother, and darned if singer-guitarist Ryan Baca’s wail doesn’t sound like “Been Caught Stealing”-era Perry Farrell on “Two Cents,” but mostly “Look Alive” affirms the muscle of a good old-fashioned power trio. And for a first outing, Wake Up Lucid is pretty ripped.

Introducing...Wake Up Lucid -

Thanks, S.S. readers, for your tips about L.A. trio Wake Up Lucid. We checked 'em out, dug their shit and hunted 'em down. We got them fresh -- turns out their first gig was last December.

Wake Up Lucid are cousins Ryan Baca (guitars/vocals) and Ian Baca (bass), and drummer Dan Hodge. They've known each other forever and jammed plenty before officially forming the band last March.

At that first gig in December, at LA's 24K club, "A couple of DJs from KROQ were there and they were really pumped on it," says Ryan, 29, who loves the Beatles and Zep and the Black Keys and the Raconteurs. "The crowd was stoked and they just started asking us back. So we decided to roll with it and kept going."

And they've only played a handful of shows since, and they're still in the process of making an EP.

They certainly have the dedication. "At our second show, we were about to get on stage when our drummer gets a phone call that his house just burned down," says Ryan. "We ended up playing the show -- I mean, it was already burned to the ground."

Given that today officially kicks off the annual celebration of America's independence, I thought it would be more than appropriate to share some good old fashioned bluesey rock and roll. I've always been a big fan of bands with that stripped-down dirty sound, so when I read the words "raunchy rock" in the subject line of Wake Up Lucid's press release, my ears immediately perked up. The LA trio self-released their debut EP Look Alive People, and are setting off on a small west coast tour in support. Sounding like a cross between Deep Purple and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, I can only imagine that their live set would deliver in spades. I'm excited to hear more from these guys and hope that they bring their act eastward in the near future. Wake Up Lucid @ Silverlake Lounge-

Los Angeles was all cold and lonely last night. This long sprawling city was like one massive wind tunnel. So to remedy things, I hightailed it to the Silverlake Lounge. I walked in, went right up to the bar and said, “give me a shot of Rock and Roll, straight up.” The bar tender poured me a smooth glass of Wake Up Lucid, a badass blues-rock trio. With their boot-stomping 70’s rock pounding away, Los Angeles warmed up and fast.

Lead singer Ryan Baca, with his long hair and vintage-vest, had a pure blues-rock belt. But in true rock fashion, this meant I had absolutely no idea what he was singing. He looked at the audience and crooned with all his heart, “I hope you’re all alone.” Or maybe he said, “We should have got a loan.” “She looked just like a cone”? I don’t know, but he definitely sang the line, “I am just a rock and roll hippy.” He absolutely was. And in a city full of ultra-gleam and post-ironic I’m-not-showering-to-be-cool, he was damn sincere.

When Ian Baca joined him on bass, Silverlake Lounge really starting bouncing. As he was slamming that bass, you didn’t just hear it, you felt it. He even whipped out a tambourine to keep the rhythm while Jamie Baca let loose on the drums. Shirtless with extra shaggy locks, their drummer would have made Animal from the Muppets proud. This was blood-pumping, thump-style, Southern-Comfort Whiskey music. Ryan Baca would go into these long guitar solos that made me want to jump on stage and air guitar right next to him. I didn’t do that though, otherwise the evening would have gotten a little awkward.

And then Ryan Baca whipped out the harmonica. Yes, the harmonica! The truest blues instrument there is, and yet I never get to see it live. Wake Up Lucid‘s street cred went up 500% at that point. By the end of their set, the bar was full of excited rockers swaying their beer bottles to the music. What more do you need in life?

Leaving the bar and seeing drunk hipsters stumbling down Sunset, I sighed. It was still a chilly night on the West Coast. But for 45 minutes, I was in the smoking hot South of yesteryear. So the next time you feel like growing your hair long and purchasing some bell-bottoms to match your cowboy boots, check out Wake Up Lucid.

Maybe I’m old-fashioned, but for me, few things go together better than steamy summer nights and a sonic deep-6 courtesy of a top-shelf power trio. Go anywhere in the world where the humidity gets above 80%, add a kickin’ three-piece and brace yourself for unintended pregnancies. From Hendrix, Blue Cheer and The James Gang right up through Husker Du, Morphine (we miss you, Mark) and Them Crooked Vultures, it’s sex music, pure and simple.

Based on the brief taste provided by Look Alive People, Wake Up Lucid isn’t totally unfamiliar with what it takes to make uglies bump. Hailing from Los Angeles, the band is a second generation family affair. Singer/guitarist Ryan Baca enlisted cousins Ian (bass) and Jamie (drums), and together they have spent the last three years prowling the left coast and laying down some of the dirtiest low-end raunch-n-roll this side of Degüello. Look Alive People was recorded in a whirlwind two-day session at the fabled Village Studios in West L.A., and is sure to turn (and turn on) some heads. This isn’t rocket science, folks. Just snaky, overdriven blooze-rawk. And pardon the visual, but it’s exactly the kinda thing your folks might’ve been listening to at the moment of your conception.

In the dream they wrote a song together, and the name of the song was “Wake Up Lucid.” Since that fateful night in 2008, Ryan and his two cousins Ian (bass) and Jamie Baca (drums) have quickly burned their name into the rock and roll conscience of Southern California with their old school brew of savage blues, heavy rhythm, and the kind of down home sincerity long lost to middle aged ponytails, how-to-play-guitar videos, and ten thousand dollar “vintage” guitar amps.

In the two years since Wake Up Lucid’s inception, the band has already seen two mentions in Rolling Stone Magazine’s “Smoking Section” and won Urban Outfitters’ “Your Band Here” contest - two achievements made without a record label or a professional recording. Now, Wake Up Lucid has cut their first EP, 'Look Alive People', at the fabled Village Studios in West Los Angeles onto two-inch analog tape (what else?) The band continues to gig around the west coast while planning a national tour for the fall. Obviously, the future is definitely bright for this rock and roll family. Given that today officially kicks off the annual celebration of America's independence, I thought it would be more than appropriate to share some good old fashioned bluesey rock and roll. I've always been a big fan of bands with that stripped-down dirty sound, so when I read the words "raunchy rock" in the subject line of Wake Up Lucid's press release, my ears immediately perked up. The LA trio self-released their debut EP Look Alive People, and are setting off on a small west coast tour in support. Sounding like a cross between Deep Purple and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, I can only imagine that their live set would deliver in spades. I'm excited to hear more from these guys and hope that they bring their act eastward in the near future. Wake Up Lucid brings you the classic rock feel and sound that came out of the 1969 music scene.

I recently had a chance to hear these guys play at a Hipster Hoedown held at the intimate Pehrspace.

Taking the stage right after the young bucks that make up Moses Campbell, Wake Up Lucid started their 10-song set with a song from “Look Alive People”, A Minor.

Even though they went on well after midnight Ryan, Ian and Jamie Baca (cousins) refused to stop playing and continued after. They began playing songs off their new album and even broke into a cover of David Bowie’s ‘Moonage Daydream’ which the late night crowd appreciated.

Lead singer, Ryan, wailed on his Gretsch and mesmerized the crowd.
The end of the set found Ryan channeling Bob Dylan rocking it vocally, on the guitar and add to that his harmonica.

Do yourself a favor head to Silverlake to hear the Baca boys rock it.

We recently received this neat little package in our in box. It was the EP by Wake Up Lucid, a trio of Mojave Desert transplants to Los Angeles. They were excited to let us know that their EP would be coming out shortly and we were definitely going to listen to it. We’ve known this band for a while because we wrote up one of their live shows a while back. And we never forget bands that leave us asking for more! But we had to give them a quick shout out because Wake Up Lucid’s EP is solid and sure to ignite a throng of loyal fans that will come up to see them tear up the stage wherever they decide to play. Their sets are inspired and so is their music.

With the trio bashing it up on stage with a guitar infused, rock and roll and blues infested energy, their music will leave you in haze that feels like you just got dropped kicked in the gut…and yes we actually love that feeling. Wake Up Lucid are cousins Ryan Baca(guitars/vocals), Ian Baca(bass) and drummer Jamie Baca.

What sounds like a hybrid of Jack White’s The Dead Weather and Neil Young but tastes like cornbread? The answer is LA-based soul-filled rock band Wake Up Lucid.
Bringing a true blues vibe, this three-piece group will be playing select shows in the LA area starting this Friday night, October 23 at Pehrspace with the Fling.
For $5 you can attend the all ages show and enjoy a night full of rock music and cornbread. Free cornbread? Yes that’s right, it seems that Friday night is all about infecting the hip Silver Lake venue with some Southern influences and hospitality, and one other thing, you can bring your own beer.
Cousins Ryan, Ian and Jamie Baca are the trio that make up Wake Up Lucid and remind us of the music of the late 60’s with a rugged and pure rock sound.

Forging a fresh take on funk, while bronzing the best in blues, this heavy trio's stripped-down sound earns their renown. Wake Up Lucid has sizzled in rolling Stone's "Smoking Section" twice this year, a cool feat for cousins Ian , Jamie and Ryan Baca, whose band only sprang into existence just over a year ago.
"Look Alive People" was produced at the Village Recorder studios in L.A., a befitting beginning as the location has also helmed projects from fellow So-Cal revolutionaries such as the Chili Peppers and Rage Against the Machine, newer stand-outs like the Raconteurs and Jet, along with classic blues-rock gurus including Dylan and the Stones.
The album's first track, "A Minor," is a stunning showpiece with dizzying riffs that flirt for more than a full minute before the vocals and heavy rythm rush in. "Two Cents" has a keen '60s vibe, with its bouncy surf rock guitar/bass and metronome drumming. With the sneering of "I don't want to hear your insinuation / and I don't much care for your college education," you could fully expect the next rhyme to be the Who's stuttered, familiar lyric regarding one's own peers.
The debut's simple, ranting (though occasionally tender) lyrics and vocals often carry the music to a Rage Against the Machine-style crescendo of greasy grandiose guitars and then return to ease it back into the pop feel. Though the style can be bit schizophrenic, it preserves the heavy edge as a quality instead of a burden. Joshe Homme describes Queens of the Stone Age as "robot rock," that he "wanted to create a heavy sound based on a solid jam and just pound it into your head." If robot rock can be coined a genre, Wake Up Lucid's Baca clan should certainly be among the first to cash in. - Casandra Armour - The Performer Magazine
