"Waldo - Pick Your Own Poison"

Sounds like: Sango, Bahwee, Depakote, Ackryte
What's so good?
By David Peter Simon | December 5th, 2012

Another fantastic producer hailing from the Midwest. First, there was Sango. Then, atµ. Now? Waldo, an MC from Grand Rapids, Michigan. Loving the emerging scene there.

This is a pretty fantastic EP overall — comfortable hip-hop featuring fantastic future beats produced by none other than Sango. In the artist’s own words, this album is “about finding your lane in life. Whether if the lane you choose to pursue is right or wrong it’s still the poison you chose. It’s also about my life and the poison I chose.” Personal favorites off the album are “There Goes the Neighborhood,” “Stranger,” and “Scars.” All of it is some pretty heavy shit, expressive lyrics paired to an eclectic mix of ambient/bass. Just another day in Waldo’s hood.

Seriously, this kid’s got the future on lock. He’s got a great flow that matches impeccably with Sango’s deep soul. As Soulection notes, “Keep in mind that Waldo is only 20 years old. He has so much potential to evolve into that man that we hear in him at this very moment. The future is infinite for him.” I’m following their advice. I’ve already enjoyed this free release, so now I need to spread it to everyone. I suggest you do the same.

You can download the album for free on Soulection’s Bandcamp, which, if you didn’t already frequent, is a supreme space for new music. As they say, “All for the love; quality & conscious music!” I can vouch for that — all their output is serious quality. Waldo is on most social networks, like Facebook and SoundCloud. Really looking forward to seeing what’s next for the adept artist. - Indie Shuffle

"Waldo - Pick Your Own Poison"

Everybody’s getting younger and it’s incredibly annoying. This guy’s 20, this guy’s 18, and this guy’s 15, which is just insulting. Nevertheless, Soulection have found more precocious talent for the pile with their 21st release. Waldo is 20 and proves his versatility over an eclectic buncha beats courtesy of Sango. From the man himself:

Honestly, Pick Your Own Poison is about finding your lane in life. Whether if the lane you choose to pursue is right or wrong it’s still the poison you chose. It’s also about my life and the poison I chose.

"WALDO – PICK YOUR OWN POISON [FREE EP]"

We were first hipped to the music of Waldo last month with his Sango produced “Poison“, which was a floating hip-hop experience filled with futuristic production and smooth lyrical flows. Today we get the chance to hear a full body of work from the Michigan MC, as he liberates the Pick Your Own Poison project on his Bandcamp page. The entire album is produced by the ever-refreshing sounds of Sango, perfect for a swagger-driven Waldo to rip with introspective, pop-friendly raps.

"Waldo & Sango- Pick Your Own Poison (Album Stream)"

THERE GOES THE NEIGHBORHOOD

?Grand Rapids via Seattle producer Sango has kept himself busy over the last few months, securing his spot as one of the most prolific and promising beat makers to hit the scene this year. Following a wide range of remix projects, solo productions and collaborations, Sango's work as a rap music producer on Pick Your Own Poison arguably represents his most accomplished effort to date. Hooking up with fellow Grand Rapidian Waldo, Sango constructs a stringent and smoothly emotive backdrop for the 20-year old emcee to lay down his game on.

In an unassuming, pan-regional manner not too far removed from what ASAP Rocky did on his mixtape, Waldo proves to be just the right fit for Sango's spacious, Southern-tinged instrumentals. Letting those bitches breathe where need be, Waldo seems well aware that the production is the star on Pick Your Own Poison. Still his natural talent for flowmanship shines through on all 9 tracks. With occasional interpolations of Lil Wayne's "Fireman," Pimp C's "Pourin' Up," Frank Ocean's "Swim Good" and a brief Nas sample thrown in for good measure, Waldo lays open his panorama of influences, switching from braggadocio to sweet talk, party rap and introspection, holding it all together with little audible effort.
Props to Soulection for making this happen and providing one of the freshest MC/producer-combos of the year. They're even giving this one away for free, so grab the download HERE. - LiveForTheFunk
