Romantic Blows:
The Saxman Waldo Weathers

"Saxual Fulfillment" is what you'll get when you hear the romantic sounds of Waldo Weathers. On stage he's the *funk master* when he plays his wind instruments and shares his smooth, sexy, singing in that deep voice that totally satisfies his audience. Weathers says when he performs it's his mission to please everyone who has come to listen.

Who is this *funk master* so intent on accomplishing his mission to pleasure his listeners?

Waldo grew up in Kentucky and at 12 years old, he felt a calling toward music. He played at dances, schools and the local clubs. The saxman started out with a rhythm and blues band across the tracks” as he put it”
Weathers is part of "The Godfather of Soul's James Browns" funk band. Charlie Pride has had Waldo blowing his sax 14 years on the country scene and he's also played with Johnny Taylor. He performs across the country with other artists including playing the blues with Bo Diddley, rockin' and rollin' with Little Richard, and performing with B.B. King. He still plays rhythm and blues every night when he's in Nashville with his own band, "Waldo and the Mix". As you can see, the saxman is very versatile with his horns.
Waldo Weathers was awarded the First Black Country Sax Player
~~ quite an honor

The groups give their audience an entertaining performance with his wide range of vocals,Mr. Saxual Fulfillment himself rounds out the group on the saxophone and with his deep, smooth, sexy voice.

Nioshi Jackson, one of Waldo's drummers said, "It has been an honor and a pleasure. I learned many things from this untapped resource of music history in Nashville. It's been great to learn from him over the years."

Waldo's wife, Donna, is multi-talented in keeping the family and band together. She works as sound engineer when Waldo performs, designs his CD covers and keeps the family stable. Waldo's oldest son, Elliot, named after Waldo's Father, is currently working on his own music project. Son Eddie sells CDs before each gig and is learning at an early age about the ins and outs of the music business. Daughter Misty helps any way she can around her own busy schedule and supports her Dad in every way. Waldo is extremely proud of his family and combining business with his home life is a priority for him.

Buddy Butts, owner of Stonewall Records, was there that night with Stonewall Recorders now BMJ Nashville, rappers rapping birthday wishes to Waldo. Even Waldo's daughter, Kristen, joined in the fun with a birthday rap to her Father, much to the delight of the crowd. Buddy told me Waldo was a "class act" in show business...quite a compliment!

It's obvious the Weathers family has an abundance of God-given talent and finds joy in blessing others who listen and find fulfillment in their music.

The CD, "Live in Barcelona", includes the songs "Shaky Ground", "Cold Sweat", and "Georgia On My Mind". His other CD, "Waldo and The Mix" is awesome and Donna's back cover designs are incredible. Check it out!
And NOW Waldo has 3 more CD's the man just keeps letting better!

As I sat and listened to Waldo play his romantic music on his saxophone I felt my senses were being fed a sensual feast fit for any woman or man. And I wasn't disappointed. I was truly "fulfilled"

Great job, Mr. Saxual Fulfillment ~~ Keep Blowing!

"Sax man shares gig tales"

Sax man shares gig tales
By Ron Wynn, rwynn@nashvillecitypaper.com
www.myspace.com/waldoweathers

Waldo Weathers may be Nashville's greatest unrecognized saxophonist. He's certainly the only player who can say he was a star soloist and ensemble contributor for both James Brown (15 years) and Charlie Pride (10 years). Getting there
Waldo Weathers plays Weddings and the Big Dollars gigs!

Weathers, whose new album Love Groove (Funkmasters) is commercially available on CDbaby.com, Weathers describes his style as "playing straight from the heart, like a Jerry Butler on sax," and said his approach places more emphasis on soul than technique.

"I love hardcore jazz and straight-ahead players, but that's not really what I do," Weathers said. "In my experience, there are many great jazz players who will play the same way on any type of gig. They're not really able to play anything simple. I try to make listeners feel like they're almost going to church when they hear me play. There's a lot of blues and soul in my music."

Though he downplays his prowess, Weathers is both an acclaimed soloist and above-average vocalist. He's a master at working within a groove, fitting his big sound into an arrangement and still finding a way to make a distinct impression and memorable statement. Weathers has been back in Nashville since 1987, returning here from Dallas, where he spent about six years. But inevitably, conversation swings to his days with Brown and Pride, two American music legends whom Weathers describes as being "about as different as night and day."

"James Brown was straight up a control freak. He would punish you. I can remember going to Augusta and doing eight-hour rehearsals for two weeks straight. Brown might do a sound check that was almost as grueling as a concert. It took me a while to figure him out and get to the point where I could deal with the way he acted and give him what he wanted.

"Pride just wanted things to sound right. He was much easier to work with, because he'd just listen and say, 'That's what I want, just do that.' But they were both great musicians; they did share that."

Interestingly, Weathers said he didn't have to make that much of an adjustment from backing Pride to backing Brown. However, he's most excited about an upcoming Japanese tour in April with veteran James Brown band members Clyde Stubblefield, Jabo Starks and Fred Wesley.

"We're going out the last two weeks of April and its being billed as The Funkmasters featuring Fred Wesley and Waldo Weathers," he said. Or I was told!!!!!!!!!!!"It's probably the biggest deal I've had for a while, and it will be some great exposure for both me and the band members. People tend to forget about how many great musicians played with James Brown. These type of gigs help them remember."

Bio

Waldo Weathers with The Sound of Brown, is an International Vocal and Sax sensation!

Quoting Waldo, "I've always been concerned with making music that's real, music that makes people move and dance and most of all music that makes people feel good".

And that is exactly what he does... MAKE PEOPLE FEEL GOOD!

Waldo began playing in a soul band called The Night Lighters (later called New Birth), at the age of twelve in his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky.

Moving to Texas, Waldo began working in the country music industry, playing with mega-stars like Charley Pride and Johnny Taylor. From there he cut his first country single--- "She Believes in Me." Upon hearing the playback, the session engineer said, "if that ain't country, I don't know what is." For many years, Waldo has been and continues to be the only black sax man in country music circles.

Through his Texas connections, Waldo moved to Nashville and began working with the likes of Charley Pride, and Delbert McClinton. Weathers credits Boots Randolph as being a prime inspiration, and the main man who encouraged him to play country sax.

Going back to his original roots in Funk and R&B, Waldo began touring with the Godfather of Soul, Mr. James Brown. This opened the door for Waldo to play the sax and lend his vocals with Dr. John, B.B. King, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and The Endeavors, to name a few. He has played stateside venues such as The House of Blues, to Maxwells in Paris. He has played at the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame, Woodstock(II), and the Montreaux Jazz Festival.

Most recently, he toured France and Spain, headlining with his own entourage of musicians to rave reviews from the critics. Waldo resides in Nashville, Tennessee.
