"Boogie Stars Backstage Bliss"

An impromptu visit to the Backstage lounge last friday night proved to be one of the most entertaining experiences I've had in quite some time. I had inadvertantly stumbled across was the release party for the Boogie Stars's new c.d. 'Treasure Town'. The crowd was a friendly mix of club kids and rocker types that seemed to know each other though I doubt they did. From the swampy funk/ blues cool of 'Starlight Train' to stompers like 'Make the whole world right again' I was trapped in a rock induced maelstrom I could not easily escape. Tony Balony is a true performer the likes one rarely sees, sort of Iggy with a slide guitar or the White Stripes at Keith's house. While short on shiney stage production values, his band more than makes up for it with some of the most solid performances and songwriting this jaded old reviewer has heard in ages. Hopefully Anthony will stick around for a while as this town could use a few more like him. - Vancouver Reviews -Rick Sommers

Anthony Walker comes from the original Vancouver alt-rock scene where he's known for his groundbreaking work with such acts as the Real McKenzies, Art Bergmann and others. His McKenzie's songs still receive respectable airplay worldwide and one tune was featured in the recent film 'Stone of Destiny' starring Robert Carlisle. His new EP 'Treasure Town' is to date the best material he's produced so far and the truest example of where Walker is coming from as a writer and performer. His early R&B influences have combined forces with the alt/ attitude of his later work to produce a wholly new and impressive sound. He's brought in notables such as Charlie Quintana on drums, Cara May DeDarko and Nick Jones on backing vocals as well as some of the best musicians in Vancouver bringing it all together. His previous LP 'Tony Balony and the Rubes' is a great primer to the following album and definitely a stand out disc on its own. Always a spirited performer himself, Walker has recruited a stellar group of bandmates making a night out with the Boogie Stars truly one of the most memorable and entertaining musical experiences.
