"Walking Shapes - "Pusher""

You may not be familiar with the Brooklyn based band Walking Shapes just yet, but get familiar because 2013 is looking bright for the newly formed project that includes members Nathaniel Hoho, Jesse Alexander Kotanksy, Dan Krysa, and Christopher Heinz. They just released their first single and video for “Pusher”. A film by Benjamin Lee Sperry tells a traveler's story through images of passing streets, countryside, sunsets, birds, and beaches. Check out the video, grab the download below, and be sure to stay tuned for some new releases coming up in the next few weeks.

Also be sure to check out the remix by Japanster who gives the track just the right dose of electronica. - Earmilk.com

"Walking Shapes Share Debut Song ‘Pusher’"

Ah, the blessed triangle. Former hipster go-to symbol and now an almost certain indicator of success. Alt-J used it to the fullest by allowing it to cement itself in almost all their artwork and now New York's Walking Shapes seem primed to take things down a similar route.

The two share few musical characteristics, though. Walking Shapes, a four-piece from the big apple, make slick, well-produced pop loaded with intelligent guitar lines, unconventional structures and big, bold melancholic lyrics such as "I don't want to drown in silence / innate fears to crown my sadness". I suppose that does sound a fair bit like Alt-J, but in falsetto-ed vocals and shifting, Radiohead-like rhythms, there's more to these guys than mere similarities to our most recent Mercury Prize recipients.

Debut track 'Pusher' comes complete with its own VHS footage video, which you can watch here. There's certainly a very by-the-budget, D.I.Y approach underlying the band's work, which is so perfectly held together by smart production, light on reverb but big on ideas. - Jamie Milton

Bio

Walking Shapes meld driving guitars, intricate arrangements and visually evocative songwriting into stunning audio refractions on New York’s sonic landscape. Musically, the album’s debut single “Woah Tiger” sets the tone for Taka Come On – fast paced, slightly grimy and sexy – with Hoho’s soaring falsetto riding a sonically churning wave, evolving into a primal scream as the verse hits the chorus. If “Woah Tiger” walks a similar path to My Morning Jacket’s Evil Urges, the album itself is so versatile, yet concise, that the band’s influences are hard to pinpoint. While an extensive guitar solo wouldn’t be out of place on a Black Rebel Motorcycle Club record, the organized chaos of a song like “Winter Fell” could be the bastard child of Syd Barrett’s post-Pink Floyd albums and Kings of Leon’s Because Of The Times. Yet, ultimately, Walking Shapes craft catchy pop songs, reminiscent of the Flaming Lips, such as “Feel Good.” Recorded at the No Shame recording studio in Soho, NY, Walking Shapes enlisted producer Gus Oberg (The Strokes, Willie Nelson, and Ryan Adams) to round out the epic, ‘Taka Come On.’
